  • I hate being the bearer of bad news but there won't be any kittens. A & T weren't too far along so they were both spayed. I feel terrible about it but I would have felt worse about even more cats needing homes. I always think that with each new kitten or puppy born that means one that might have been adopted won't be.

There is an interesting development though, A & T's relationship has totally changed! I think being pregnant had something to do with them not being friendly to each other. Alice is much more outgoing and has been cleaning Trixie.

And here are links to videos, they are so cute!

Youtube is taking forever to update the 2nd link so here's the one to my channel.

  • Oh, they're so beautiful! I'm glad they're getting along much better now. It's amazing how personalities can change.

I think you did the right thing....you'd be finding home for another two bunches of kittens soon.
  • caseopele,
It must have been hard for you to do that. I praise your kindness and your ability to see what was best for the little ones. I hope they find a home soon. I love the way they're now taking care of each other. Sweetness!
  • Subject: Alice & Trixie

You did the right thing. A kitty came to our yard several years ago so skinny that you could grasp her (gently) 'round the waist and almost touch your fingers together. We took her in and when she went to the vet he found that she was pregnant. We made the same decision. She lives with us and is so happy now - when you pet her she purrs 'till she squeaks! It was the right thing to do, but I know it can be unsettling.
Alice and Trixie are adoreable! I'm so glad that they're getting along. They are really beautiful.
Thank you for being such a good, generous foster-mom! I hope they find a good home, soon. Please keep us updated?
  • Flexichick, Mamacita, and Violet, thank you so much! I felt terrible about it but knew it the right thing to do. Your kind words made me feel so much better, smooches to all of you!

I'm just fascinated by the way they're behaving toward each other now. If I didn't already have a full house... A & T are such special girls and I'll do my best to get them a home together. Anyone interested in adopting them both will be first on our list. Thanks guys!
  • I took in my cat when she was pregnant and she was really aggressive to my dogs. She went after one of them one day and bit his ear -- there was blood everywhere. The poor dog was traumatized. I guess they are hostile to anything they perceive to be a threat to their babies.
  • Poor little girls, I hope they get a home together. After all they've been through I hate to see them split up.

    Meow.
  • this story feels really nice, like a children's book

next the sister cats should take a trip to somewhere exotic
    like atlantic city

    and then they make their way back home{minus a thousand gajillion dollars}
and drink a glass of warm milk before tucking in
    and go to sleep
  • Hey guys! Sorry I've been so lax with updates. The sisters are doing really well, I finally got them to eat something other than Meow Mix. They're eating Nutro Natural Choice Complete Care which I'm switching my cats to as well. Trixie has been a little trouble maker, scratching my bath mat and their toys into their food dishes, knocking my box of tampons off the shelf and chewing them up. Today while I was in the shower she knocked my basket of cotton balls onto the floor, then came over and stared at me through the shower curtain. It was like she was saying, "look at me, I'm being naughty!" I'm loving it because it means she feels comfortable now.

Alice is sweet as can be, loving on Trixie and me. I think being outside was harder on her, she was missing quite a few whiskers. They're finally growing back so she has one side of short whiskers. But she's really turned out to be a sweetheart, doesn't really play, she's happier to curl up and be petted.

They are getting their 1st visitor tomorrow! A woman and her boyfriend who are interested in both of them, she sounds really nice and works in PS. I'll be keeping my fingers crossed that they are meant for Alice and Trixie. Thanks everyone!
  • Ok, sorry for not updating. Computer problems for the past week and a half, still have more tweaking to do before I'm completely back up. A & T are still with me, the couple that came to see them loved them but Trixie wouldn't come out. They were really great people and understood that a connection is either there or not. I would have no problem with them adopting any of my fosters.

Since then, I've been posting on craigslist when I'm working and haven't really gotten any bites. One or 2 but something wasn't right with the people, I didn't feel comfortable with them. The flyers that were put up around the neighborhood say that they can be adopted seperately since they were made before they showed how close they are. So, the few calls I've gotten from the flyers were people who only wanted one cat.

I have a flyer up at work and all my regulars know about A & T, I'll keep posting on craigslist and keep my fingers crossed. I'll post another update soon and tell you how they're doing, their personalities are really coming out now. But I've got to go to work now so just know that they are cute and sweet as ever. Thanks!
  • caseopele, i thought you were keeping alice + trixie? are you just fostering?
  • brooklynleather, I wish I could keep A & T! They are really the sweetest girls and such characters. But with 2 dogs and 4 cats of my own there's no way I could keep them.

They've started exploring more and are a little less freaked out by the dogs. Trixie keeps trying to get my girls to play with her but they haven't shown much interest. She also talks to me now, cute little squeaks when she wants wet food. Alice talks a little too, more a throaty purr though. I actually saw Trixie clean Alice and they still sleep next to each other. They like to sit in the bathroom window while I'm in the shower. And one of them has figured out how to open the bathroom door, not too hard since it doesn't close properly.

Man, I'm falling in love with these girls. They better find a good home soon!
  • They sound so sweet. Good luck on your hunt for a new home for them!
  • Well, it looks like I really do have the wussiest pitbull in the world. When I take a shower I close the bathroom door, it's usually propped open with a wine crate so the girls can get in and out but the dogs can't get in.

This morning I found out who's been opening the bathroom door, Trixie! I was already in the shower so I just left it until the wind blew the door shut and Trixie started freaking out. She was meowing and squeaking and climbing up on the edge of the tub, I stuck my head out and saw that Alice had been locked out. I shoved the door open (thankfully I could reach it from the shower) and called Alice to come back in. No answer so I pushed the door open wide enough so the wind wouldn't blow it shut again. A few minutes later I hear some growling and hissing coming from the kitchen (bathroom is right off the kitchen). I yell at whoever it is to knock it off and it gets quiet.

I finish up and when I get out I see Ripley (the pit) sitting in front of the bathroom door looking pathetic. I stick my head out and see that Alice has cornered Ripley and won't let her get by. I had to shield Ripley from Alice so she could run by her into the livingroom and herd Alice back into the bathroom. Yes folks, that makes 2 times that my (oh so vicious) pitbull has had her ass handed to her by a 10lb cat. The first was Percy, the boy kitty I took in after Christmas and found a home for. (With the help of you awesome brooklynians!)

I wish I had my camera, Ripley couldn't have looked more pitiful if she tried. It was like she was saying, "Save me, Mommy, that kitty is trying to kill me!" And it's not like she didn't have enough room to go around Alice, she was just too scared! So, if anyone needs a protection cat you know where to send them.
  • That is hilarious!
I love a bad ass cat.
  • 2 more things:

    1. Alice and Trixie killed the 3rd waterbug I've seen in my place since moving in 7 months ago. I walked into the bathroom and saw it missing limbs on the floor. Thankfully, I have a vacuum or I may have wussed out like the last time and gone running to my super. With one shoe on no less! A & T were sitting right near it looking very proud of themselves. I guess I should be glad they didn't deposit it on my pillow or something.

    2. Trixie is a mighty tampon killer! She started pulling them out of the box and playing with them so I let her have the 2 that she'd bit holes in the wrappers. I went into the bathroom one day to find that she'd completely "killed" one, wrapper off, stuffing shredded, and cardboard crushed. Since then she's had no interest in the other one, I guess because she's already slain one. Trixie - 1. Evil tampon menace - 0!
  • I shudder to think what her next victim will be?!
  • Well, the first bite I've had in weeks for the girls fell through. A woman came to look at them on Thursday, seemed really nice and liked the girls. I emailed her more pictures and an adoption application, we had set up a home visit that day (which she was ok with). She emailed me yesterday:

    Hi,

After informing my husband about the home visit(s) and the application process to get the cats he raised strong objections to the whole adoption proceedings. I think they are adorable and wish you the best in finding them a good home (and believe me ours is up there in the top 10 for sure), unfortunately I am going to have to cancel our visit on Sat. and withdraw our candidacy to take them in.
    Sincerely,
    Cheryl

Apparently, she feels that I should just "know" her home is wonderful. I should have handed over the girls to a complete stranger I know nothing about except for what she tells me. How dare I not be psychic? I emailed her back this morning, nothing rude just explaining why the home visit and application were necessary. I had also told her that the home visit was mostly so I could see that she was who she says she is. She could have expressed her discomfort with the process and discussed it with me like an adult.

I'm disappointed since I had a good feeling about her when she came over but I'm also glad she and her husband didn't adopt the girls. I won't give up though! Here's some more pictures to end on a better note.

Hang in there, caseopele! A decent screening process shows people that they are adopting from a reputable person. And most people don't mind it in the slightest. They understand it's meant to ensure that the pet ends up in a good--and permanent--home!
  • Thanks Laura! I absolutely want to find them the right home but I feel guilty that I can't take in any other fosters until that happens. I have to remind myself (with my mother's voice) that I can't save all of the kitties! :(
  • These two are really gorgeous, they remind me of my kitty Opaw, she is a tabbico with the same exact coloring. I wish I could take them, but I have to find a new apartment first!
  • Caseopele, you're a very special person.
  • dakotas way, thank you so much! Animals happen to be my weak spot, I've loved them ever since I can remember. My nana on my dad's side was the same, all the strays ended up at her house. I firmly believe that there is an underground communication system that animals use. They know who to go to! The woman that owns the bookstore next to my job must send out signals or something. So many animals have found their way to her, the latest being 2 raccoon babies. One walked right by her door when she was going out, he is now at a wildlife rehab center. The other visits her house at night and has even gone in when the garden door was open.

Out of the 6 pets I have right now, I only actively set out to adopt one. The rest found me starting with my oldest cat Wednesday. I went with a friend to look at some kittens when I was 19, I had no intention of getting a cat. I walked in, saw 2 cute fluffy kittens rolling around and Wednesday all scruffy and scared drinking milk out of a garbage pail lid. I knew immediately that she was meant to be with me. I found my oldest dog Cheech tied up outside my building when I was 21. I woke up one morning to him barking and looked out my window. He looked up at me and gave me a look that said, "You are taking me home!" And so it began...

Quick update on Alice and Trixie: Nada, zip, zilch, zero. Sure, I get people looking at their sign at work exclaiming how cute they are and they wish they could adopt them. Then there's the occasional email response to their craigslist ad consisting of 1 line. Something along the lines of "i'll give them a good home ASAP!" Not happening. I know there's someone out there for them, just like I knew each of my animals were meant to be with me.
  • How frustrating! Sometimes it just takes time, tho. Maybe it's slow because it's summer. I've never met a (nonferal) kitty that was truly unadoptable...

Have you been in touch with brooklyn animal foster network (http://brooklynanimalfosternetwork.org/index.html)? They're the folks that show adoptables every saturday on 7th avenue in front of John Jay high school. Maybe they would let you display trixie & alice. (If you do this, just be careful in this weather that they are not in direct sun or out in the heat for too long.)

Also try re-doing their photos and flyers. Photos where the pet is making eye contact are supposedly the most successful. Other tips here:

Unbearably cute photos and copy tend to make people powerless to avoid calling you!
  • It's true the animals do talk to you and doesn't it seem that they literally fall from the sky in front of you? It's the weirdest thing. I'm the same as you, Caseopele, in the deep love of animals.
I just love the honesty of them all. If they don't like you, they bite or kick you. No hidden agendas at all. And they love you unconditionally.

We just adopted our second dog Sage (a 3 year old muttley) who was found wandering Staten Island and was on her last day in the pound before they were going to put her to sleep. A rescue group came in and fostered her until we found her on their website. She is the most loving and sweet dog ever. What a terrible waste it is, all the wonderful animals put down because they don't have homes. Thats why its so very important to spay and neuter.
Anyhow, keep up the good work to all who make the effort to help all of the critters of the world.
  • caseopele and quijibo, you guys are great! you've already done so much more for these cats than most people would do. a&t are adorable and i hope they find a good permanent home. i'll keep my ears open for anyone in the market for some beautiful cats. i'd take them myself if i didn't think my own calico kitty would scratch them to pieces!
  • Well, no takers yet but I got a call from someone today asking for help with their foster cat! So, here are some new pictures of the girls.
