New to Area - Advice on Fort Greene parts/Subway....Thanks!
Hi, So glad I found this forum. I have alot to read up on!
I am not new to the city, however, I Am new to Fort Greene, Brooklyn. I felt safe in Fort Greene and liked the area, so signed a lease on a great apt just north of Atlantic ave station a wk ago. I know Bed-Stuy is not the best of areas, which is close. Are there any other areas or parts that I should not stroll into that are close? I believe there are projects near the area - how are they? (yes, something I should have researched first.) I'm sure I'll find this out on my own eventually, but I would prefer the advice of those who know.
Also, how are the subways at night? Are they crowded with people coming home from Manhattan bars, or is it advisable to cab it back across the bridges?
THANK YOU!!!

Tip #1: never ever get on the G train.
-
The subways are usually crowded at night coming home, and most of the area is pretty safe. Parts of Myrtle Ave and the Navy Yard areas where the projects are are definitely not so great, but most of the main Fort Greene area is safe overall. Welcome to the neighborhood.

Nothing wrong with riding the G train.
If you have an issue with the G train perhaps you'd be in favor of the NYPD posting an officer on the platform of each station like they have on the 7th Avenue Q train. -
the g train is my bitch
seriously -
The G train has been good to me...so far!

Subject: scared sh*tless
jesus.. are u kidding.. your scared of bedstuy? scared of how close u live to the projects? then why even move to the area to live in fear u dummy? what is it u fear that has u so uptight? sounds like u should go to a shrink and tell him u have case of "racial anxiety".. oh.. never heard of that one before? well figure it out.. jeez.. -
YESS!!!!! this message board is hilarious!. well played, bottle flipper!!!
-
Are you concerned with safety or reliability? The G train has a rep for being pretty unreliable, but it's definetly not something I would "never get on"...it's as safe as any other subway line in NYC.
-
At least the G doesn't have the heroin addicts nodding off in the morning rush hour like the F.
Bottle Flipper has a point: we don't live in a warzone. There are no hoodlum checkpoints. If you need to know "danger zones" its the same as anywhere in the city- subway entrances, bodegas that don't sell produce, etc. -
It is a nice nabe. Enjoy the park, farmers market, restaurants, and the bars. Struggle to find the best groceries, parking, and fancy-smancy gourmet items. Do not hang out in the projects, you might look scared and get mugged  Similarly, avoid dark alleys, known drugs dens, and fight clubs, lol

Why? It's not the safety issue, it's the service issue.

this isn't particularly helpful. the poster is clearly new to the area so education would probably be more helpful than open resentment. give a new neighbor a break.......or just be an ornery guest poster. it's up to you.
to the original poster: bedstuy is a huge place and it's not accurate or fair to paint it all in a negative way. as with most neighborhoods, there are beautiful parts and parts you should stay away from on an evening stroll.
As for various comments on the G train, when there isn't construction it runs pretty much as frequently and reliably as any other train in the city. Before I moved to the nabe I bought into the anti-G-train hype but after living here for two years I have to say the reputation is unfair. The G train gets me to and from work during rush hour as well as any train. it comes infrequently at night but what train doesn't?
When there's weekend construction the G train is a mess and I don't use it. But the rest of the time it's a perfectly reliable train, even if it's shorter and makes me feel like i'm riding the short bus. -

My bad. I assumed that your anti-police bias was creeping into another thread. I stand corrected. -
Nobody is anti-police, but we are anti getting shot 41 or 51 times while entering our home or leaving work or a bachelor party. Thanks

i got that part, but don't see how this is relevant response to your post. eh, whatever. -
Yeah, I'm not anti-police as much as I'm anti-police attitude.

saying that bed stuy is to be avoided is just plain stupid. this thinking is exactly the problem with the "new" ft. greene. it was much better 5 years ago. take the time to walk around the area-and be a part of the community. explore clinton hill and bed stuy. all three of these areas are wonderful. fg/ch are more gentrified, if that's what makes you feel better. bed stuy is gorgeous and very similar to ch in character (it's all spilling over anyway) this kind of post is exactly what is wrong with the "new" brooklyn these days. think for yourself.
-
one more thing-to say that the g train is to be avoided at all costs, is also SOO 1988...new york has changed-it's safe, it's clean-the G train is the future of coastal brooklyn, it connects williamsburg to bed stuy to clinton hill to fort greene to carroll gardens, etc. people are so misinformed, it's funny.
-
Sean Bell was shot at 51 times and killed after his bachelor party, and Diallo was shot 41 times at his front door. I left out the many that were killed with far less shots fired. Nobody is anti police we are anti criminal police.

I agree with this post, and the obvious bias of many of the comments by others is not as covert as they think they are. -
snarkiness paints such an inviting portrait of bed-stuy.
well done, guys -

Don't think the OP would be persuaded about Bed-Stuy's safety by the inviting come-ons of a bunch of message board characters, though. Notice that s/he "know(s) Bed-Stuy is not the best of areas", despite barely having set foot in Fort Greene itself before signing a lease. Why go through the trouble of persuading he/she that their perceptions are wrong when their mind is made up? Funny thing is that I have a feeling that the OP will have an opportunity to "discover" Bed-Stuy (or perhaps even East New York) firsthand as they're priced out of Fort Greene in the next five to 10 years
well done, guys

I think it's pretty obvious the OP suffered from a lack of knowledge, not a permanent judgment of all of BedStuy. So the attitude in the snarky responses is just unnecessary.
If someone is offended by the OP's misconceptions about BedStuy, then respectfully disagree. Build a diologue, don't get defensive. You don't have to convince anyone of anything, but responding with attitude and calling comments 'stupid' just isn't helpful.
This board is at its best when people converse, discuss, debate and educate. It's at its worst when people just get snippy with each other from the get-go.
Right or wrong, it's going to take BedStuy a while to get rid of its negative stereotype from decades past. This forum can be a great medium to help educate and expose false conceptions. Or it can just be a snipe-fest. It's up to us. -

Agreed, for the most part. Still, I think a little 'tude is okay to highlight certain things, but the overall tone should be inclusive and helpful. However, the OP didnt help themselves much with their opening comments. For instance, I find it strange that someone would ask about projects AFTER moving to FG, and saying that Bedstuy is "not the best" when commenting on a board that carries BedStuy in its title is not the wisest thing to do.

On the otherhand, I also think people get too easily bent out of shape whenever someone says anything less than complimentary about Bedstuy. Ofcourse there are good parts to bedstuy, but lets keep it real - it still has an image problem to combat. People get these ideas from what they hear, and not everyone is inclined to go and see for themselves just for the sake of it. -
Define snarky please?
-
a combination of being petty and alternately aggressive and defensive.
basically posting with an attitude of superiority or disdain.
eg:
"saying that bed stuy is to be avoided is just plain stupid"
or
"sounds like u should go to a shrink and tell him u have case of "racial anxiety".. oh.. never heard of that one before?"
or the passive-aggressive confrontational tone of:
"the obvious bias of many of the comments by others is not as covert as they think they are." -

I think it's sweet that you're dead-set on 'respecfully disagreeing' with ignorant posters. That, however, is not my style. It's a bit galling to me that the OP would expect a respectful answer after such a derisive post, and I'm just not one of those people that will hold Mr./Mrs. "I've-just-discovered-Brooklyn"'s hand to traipse through the borough. You earn respect, not assume that it will automatically be given. This board is at its best when people converse, discuss, debate and educate. It's at its worst when people just get snippy with each other from the get-go.
I dunno what/when the board is at its best--admittedly, I haven't been on here as long as you. I think it's interesting that there's a place I can go to talk about/read about my neighborhood. In the real world, I'd tell someone describing Bed-Stuy as some inner-city hell to eff off, so I have no problem doing the same online. If the OP had 'respectfully' asked a question about Bed-Stuy/Fort Greene/projects etc., he/she would have received the kind of helpful/respectful answers that I've seen others get on this board.Right or wrong, it's going to take BedStuy a while to get rid of its negative stereotype from decades past. This forum can be a great medium to help educate and expose false conceptions. Or it can just be a snipe-fest. It's up to us.
Don't get me wrong--I don't think Bed-Stuy's problem is purely one of stereotypes etc. It is in many areas a 'dangerous' neighborhood for people who aren't familiar with it, it is blighted in some areas etc. Most people would add that it's also a beautiful community anchored by hard-working property owners and added to everyday by vibrant newcomers who can appreciate its relative affordability and architectural charms. Those are the people I'm interested in interacting with on this board. Sadly, others like the OP who approach the neighborhood with fears/trepidations/stereotypes etc. may be treated to the full extent of my snark.
Ye humble citizen -
I think petty, defensive and aggressive depend on what side you are on; as in minor surgery it is only minor when someone else is being slit open.
Howdy, Stranger!
