    Well, I have a 13-year-old and I can't imagine her, or any of her friends, acting that way. And I've spent some time in her school as a volunteer and have found most of the kids to be reasonably polite and respectful.

    But I've definitely known some bratty Park Slope kids, and I would agree that the worst of them have parents who can't say no and put up with backtalking and mouthiness. The most obnoxious kid I've known was being raised by a hippie mom who wanted her daughter to "challenge authority" -- which meant that the kid was allowed to call her mother a bitch. :roll:

    But I also think that people have been complaining about "kids these days" for many generations.

    I think you did the right thing Sirena. If my kid were acting out in this way I would expect someone to bring it to his attention. Even though the rudeness wasn't directed at La Sirena, she had a right to speak up. They're just looking to see what they can get away with. If enough people shame these kids into submission, they'll eventually get the idea. :wink:

    I agree. I want people to feel free to correct my children's behavior if it crosses a line and I don't want my kids then swearing at the adult! We have been cowtowed by our own children!

    Subject: Privileged Kids Gone Wild

    I like observing the kids in this neighborhood, it's like a nature show. I've been here ten years so I've seen many of them grow from toddlers in tow to teenagers smoking and making out on the corner.

    The personas we witness on the streets are no doubt a far cry from the way they act in school or in front of their parents. I'll bet the cursing and smoking brats you saw in the pizzeria are straight-A honor students.

    I think it's cool that these kids are finding a way to experiment with rebellion within the safety of this privileged neighborhood. Don't worry, they'll shape up when they get to college. In the meantime, just watch and enjoy.

    As for the "World in general" comment, I'll guess that's tongue in cheek. At least I hope so--ever come across a machine-gun wielding 11 year old in Sierra Leone? I think kids in the "World in general" still have the upper hand over our local brats on the "undisciplined and unstructured" barometers.

    Not speculating at all, nor am I speculating how childhood soldiers would have hypothetically been had they been raised in the lap of luxury. Am merely saying it's absurd to say PS kids are worse than kids the world over (anyway you didn't say this, Drano did). That there are good reasons for this (such as kidnapping and brutality) is without a doubt. I'm just tired fo the "Americans are worse than everyone" line. Sorry for the silly patriotism, which is actually ironic I guess since I can't stand most of this country outside of Brooklyn and Manhattan (and then only parts). OK, and maybe some of Queens.

    how is it for generations prior and in other coutnries, teenagers DON't act this - is it perhaps because of attitudes like yours?
    baby boomers want to be buddies to their kids, not parents.

    baby boomers want to be buddies to their kids, not parents.
    perhaps teenagers didn't behave in this particular way because the words/behavior wasn't in their vocabulary. perhaps, watching MTV and the OC, et alia, shows them ways of communication they won't learn at home.

    (teenagers in war-ravaged countries, for example, don't likely say things like this. but they follow the crowd and help burn fires in the street and yell anti-american sentiments which they learn because that's what surrounds them.)

    I think you did the correct thing, not that it helped by their reactions. I taught/teach my kids to respect adults. They might not like what an adult says at times but in no way would I condone mouthing off to anyone even a complete staranger. Good manners are lacking in kids and adults these days.
    I've seen little kids hit and slap their mothers while the mothers act like nothing is wrong that poor little zoe is just in a bad mood.

    I had brunch with my husband last week at a neighborhood restaurant and a young child was crying loudly for a good 20 minutes. Why the mother or father did not remove the child is anybody's guess. I guess they think we should all suffer the kids crying fit. When our kids were small no matter what type of restaurant we were in if they were crying one of us would go outside till they calmed down.
