  • um... why, exactly?
  • Bono is the guest editor and it's the Africa addition.
  • um...yikes?
  • um...yikes?
    What does that mean?
  • um...most would assume a request to view a magazine (and usually a specific piece) is in regard to an association with the forum topic.
  • I wish I was smart enough to figure out what you're all talking about.
  • Blowed up REAL good!
  • a: this doesn't belong on the PS board.

b: bono is really good friends with jesse helms. JESSE. HELMS.

ergo, my home is a bono free zone. no vanity fair, sorry
  • I wish I was smart enough to figure out what you're all talking about
me too...i missed something (first time writing on a board) but clearly my vanity fair post was inappropriate. should have taken the time out to read the rules.
  • Park Slope, Brooklyn, that kind of stuff. Post when Bono's shopping for something restored on PPW.
  • got it and once i thought about it.... it makes sense. got a little too excited is all.
  • brooklynpotter wrote: my home is a bono free zone
Mine too. Plus I differ with his views on how to best help Africa, so, no Bono for me thanx.
  • lmboogie wrote: got it and once i thought about it.... it makes sense. got a little too excited is all.
    s'okay. no harm, no foul.
  • However - if someone get's excited and wants to share, surely this board is such a forum? lmboogie just wasn't very clear. I would still like to know exactly why he/she is so into it. Apart from merely the magic Bono touch.
  • sure. but i think it would be better served in The Lounge forum.
  • ok. never bin there. So many places to visit. Hard to keep up.
  • well go take a looksee, then! always seeking fresh blood (heh heh heh)
  • I'm glad it takes a pompous holier-than-thou celebrity to make people give a shit about Africa.
  • meh
Bono's doing something, instead of not doing anything. What's wrong with that?
If we have to have celebrities, I'm delighted to have them Do Good Works. Haven't seen that VF yet . . .

    :D
  • except that the good work comes along with a piggybacked message about choice, women, civil rights, etc.

    I have no idea what you're refering to . . . is Bono anti-abortion, anti-civil rights, anti-women? Now I can't wait to look at his guest-edited VF!

Fekking Mother Teresa was anti-abortion . . . but Bono?
  • bono is an irish catholic who is vehemently pro-life.
  • Does this mean I need to rethink pro bono activism?
  • it depends on which side you're on
  • brooklynpotter wrote: bono is an irish catholic who is vehemently pro-life.
really? because these anti-abortion folks seem to think the opposite:

and granted this is an old interview, but:

    http://www.motherjones.com/arts/books/1989/05/bono.html

and didn't he convince jesse helms to support something or other about human rights in china? (it was a long time ago; i may have it wrong, but i remember being SHOCKED as an nc liberal to see that jesse and i were on the same side of any issue.) refusing to talk to our ideological enemies is a very principled stance, but a poor way to effect change.

that said, i don't know much about his plan for africa, and i wouldn't describe myself as a bono fan per se; i just think that trying to do good is better than doing nothing.
  • Plus I differ with his views on how to best help Africa
are you kidding me? do you even know what he's done to help the people of Africa?

believe me I'm not a fan (don't listen to his music) but the man is a saint for his commitment to fighting hunger and aids around the world.
  • honestly, i know this isn't very PC, but i think we should be taking care of our own before we take care of others. lest you forget our "liberation" of iraq.

Hunger, fine. As for AIDS, I don't think toxic AIDS drugs are the answer to poverty-caused diseases. People in Africa are dying of the same things they've been dying from for ages - malnutrition, contaminated water, etc. Except that now it's called AIDS.
  • what people in africa need the most are condoms. it's about as basic as that.

wait, seriously? what do you think of toxic drugs for people in the US with AIDS?
