Were your teenage girls getting Pedicures Nails Park Slope
If so, you might seriously want to question what they are doing on their Friday and Saturday evenings (that their parents ha ha, know nothing about ha ha). These girls make "Girls Gone Wild" seem like nuns. I seriously doubt the parents of these seemingly well off girls know that they are engaging in anonymous sex with multiple partners because they are "so trashed" they aren't even sure who they F'd. last night and how many times.

I would not discount the possibility that they were trying to shock the adults around them. But I have to agree with Veets -- teenage girls having sex did not start with the current generation of overpriviledged Park Slope youth.

Yes. I realize that. Sex is one thing. They were not trying to shock. They were talking discreetly (as discreetly as 16 year olds can be) among themselves and the salon was pretty empty. When did teenage sex become screwing anonymous multiple partners at a party and then not even being sure who or how many? Somehow this kind of all passed me by. I know this has been an issue with some of the private schools in the city and I guess it has migrated out here. Call me a prude, but I hope when my daughter turns sweet 16, she isn't trashed at a party screwing recklessly and indiscriminantly and giving hand jobs. It isn't sexual liberation, and it is probably a little dangerous and it is all a little depressing. -
just because the clean-cut girl gets a mani-pedi doesn't mean she's not going to party. it's an issue in the entire country, not just urban areas. if i had a kid, it would freak me out. then again, when i was a teenager, my parents had very little idea about what i was doing, and i made sure to keep it that way.
if kids are going to have sex they're going to have sex. push condoms, not attitude. -

Why do you even care what these girls are doing? I think there are things going on that are much more harmful to society. Better to be ignorant to the whole thing, just like their parents. And hopefully one day these girls will come out of this mess of a time relatively unharmed.

I thought it was kind of ironic that I was reading about Paris Hilton and obviously this kind of party behaviour that adults read about with a judgmental smirk is being emulated by young girls. And even young girls in "liberal sophisticated" park slope where parents are supposedly going that extra mile to educate their kids.
but yes, I would be happy to discuss sustainable farming and the link to global warming or the splintering of the middle east and our destructive foreign policy but this is a park slope board and this was a park slope observation. -

but seriously, I hear the same kind of thing on the subway and from teens talking on their cell phones walking down the street. it seems like the barriers to entry for sex have been worn down, so if it's "just" oral sex or "just" a hand job, then it's absolutely no big deal. I would be interested in knowing how many parents of these girls (and boys too) have sat their children down and said "I do not want you to engage in sex with multiple and/or anonymous partners. It is not a healthy choice for a teenager and there are lots of risks associated with that behavior, such as...."
I am betting in many cases, that has not happened. Attitudes and practices toward sex have shifted a lot, in my opinion, over the past few years. Especially with the rise of the Internet, it's now as easy to order casual sex as it is to get a pair of pants from J Crew. Just check out the personals on Craigslist and you can have it delivered to your door in under 30 minutes for free! If kids see that type of behavior in adults (and I bet some of their parents are on there....look at the number of married people posting) then that could be the behavior they choose to model.
It would be cool if sex was truly special for people, but I don't know if that works for everyone these days. -

One thing I have noticed is that by the middle school years, even those hovering Park Slope parents have become much less involved with their children. We're led to believe that if we do everything correctly (breastfeed, do "attachment parenting," purchase the appropriate educational toys, sign up the toddler for music, dance, and gymnastics, etc., etc.), our project, I mean child, will turn out perfectly. But by the time the kid is a teenager you realize that it doesn't work quite like that, and you have less control than you thought. So I think people detach, and maybe to some extent that is healthy.
I do agree with you, WTGirl, that it is disturbing to think of teenagers having anonymous sex with multiple partners, but I also think this is not a new phenomenon. I remember New York magazine running various hysterical stories about this kind of behavior in the '90s. Yes, I would be horrified if I thought my kids or their friends were doing this. I also remember telling my mother I was going one place when I was really going another place. I think it's probably impossible to have total control and supervision of a teenager, so all you can do is hope you've instilled some good values before they are running loose in the world. -

i care because obviously these girls need help. it's not about the actual sex but if at that age you are engaging in that type of behavior then you probably have low self esteem, self hatred and a bunch of other emotional baggage that needs to be addressed before you really hurt yourself.
i care because these young girls are our future and obviously no one is teaching them how to respect their bodies and become great leaders. -

When I grew up in the Slope a relatively short time ago none of the girls, with the exception of a VERY select few, behaved like that, much to the disappointment of us guys. In current Park Slope however this behavior appears to be the norm.

Every community anywhere has girls who have a lot of sex in high school or earlier. But there are also plenty girls who don't. I waited until college, so did nearly every single one of my best girlfriends. We were not prudes, we were not religious, we just thought high school boys were completely unappealing! We could not wait for high school to be over, and to go away to college. The thing is, the girls who go around talking in public about their sexcapades, that wear the thongs and trashy clothes, those are simply the most visible ones. It does not mean all the girls in their school are like that. You just don't notice the quiet girls as much when they walk by. But they're out there. You know the quiet girls, they're the ones who do NOT peak in high school. That's the part that's sad to me. How the overly sexually active teen girls burn themselves out. They get too cynical, and all used up by the time they are in their 20's.
