actually its Soft Drink. Im pretty sure thats only NC though. But honestly southeners are making the exact same complaints about rich northeners moving in and making everything expensive that many brooklyn residents are. Its interesting to leave an area I had lived for 16 years which was experiencing a problem my family was apart of (north to south movement) to an area which the residents feel I am causing a similar problem (anywhere outside of NYC to NYC movement) .
Its kinda dumb. I make very little and my gf I live with is a teacher. We are contributing to the fabric of this place regardless of the current residences feelings and God forbid I like to each shitty sushi. Because at the same time I frequent the many caribbean places as well.
also the hippsters so many people hate are really the only ally the poorer current residents have since they oppose the richer individuals who raise prices and bring barnes and nobles with them just as much. -

Hell, it is worse than that. If someone moves from Manhattan to Brooklyn, they are "yuppifying" the place. Or Staten Island to Brooklyn. You can imagine what they say in Staten Island about the Brooklyn folk that move there. It even exists within a single borough. Move from certain parts of Brooklyn to certain other parts, and ZING. Much less from "outside". Damn outsiders. Well I've been here for two years. Well _I've_ been here for five years. Well _I've_ been here from twenty years. Well _I've_ been here for forty. Hey, I just moved here THIS YEAR, and I'm just trying to live and make it work. Thanks for all the fish. -

Let me live my freakin life on my sub 30k salary. Its not like New York has ever been the cheapest place to live. If you want cheap move to the south so you can get bitched at by abunch of rednecks whos families have lived in the same town for 7 generations.

also you have to know some shit was gonna to go down when you live in a gigantic mansion build by some robber baron during the 1880s. You have to be completely blind to not see that abunch of white rich people were going to clamor for that crap. Its not like the majority of brooklyn is a slum filled with wooden huts in the middle of no where. It was a freakin rich persons paradise 100 years ago built next to the economic and cultural capital of the World. Im sorry but sadly they are takin their shit back over. -

This discussion is hilarious. I've lived in a number of places all around the country (and one outside of the U.S.), and I have to say this "us vs. them" thing is the same everywhere.
All over this world we can't f-ing stand one another...which is kind of funny, until it isn't and someone pokes an eye out.
We're more alike than you think. Just last week I was in CA & TX visiting three very different, distinct groups of people. The thing they all had in common? They couldn't stand the new people moving in - wrecking property values, changing the culture of their neighborhood or trying to change the way things had always been done (the amount of energy people put into hating on their neighbors' lack of lawn care, sheesh!).
We moved into Clinton Hill almost 3 years ago because we could no longer afford our Prospect Heights place, and a bar moved in below us, making sleep a thing of the past. Now we're here...until we're priced out once again. And while I'd love to make enough money to actually buy a place (and never pay a rboker again) I think how much I've enjoyed getting to know various places I've lived, and their impact on my life.
We're not trying to "destroy" anyone's neighborhood. We're not whining over lost cheese shops. We're here to live, work and play. We're here to become a part of and make an impact upon our neighborhood. It's not just yours, it's all of ours, and we do our best to be mindful of everyone we meet and develop relationships with. We seek out our grocer and ask for new products so we can continue to invest our money into our neighborhood businesses. We try restaurants we might never have considered before because now they're just around the block (and if we don't like their food/service, we chalk it up to the dish we ordered/day we came in and give it another go).
But we're all a-holes to someone. It's just a fact of life everywhere. Not just here. I will now get off my soapbax and return to quietly drinking away my office day. Thanks.

The Cherokee were largely from Ga but could be found in the surrounding area including NC in the Applacian Mountains. My great grandmother was from the GA/AL border.
