  • I work for a film licensing company doing international distribution.

Gave up a 10-year+ career at the industry giant (Getty Images) to work for a start-up with solid former colleagues for less pay and crudy benefits but really serious upside when we sell or go public in the next 1-3 years. Former job at GI allowed me to buy an apt. in PH 3 years ago by cashing in stock options.

Life is tight in the big city these days with two kids, mortgage, etc., but would not live anywhere else.
  • I do public education/media relations and youth outreach work for a national civil liberties/civil rights nonprofit. I'm not comfortable listing my exact salary, but I get decent pay for mid-level management at a nonprofit (compared to salaries for similar positions at other nonprofits). Last year when I moved into my apartment, my income was BARELY ($100 per year) over the minimum to qualify for a "moderate income" apartment; I've gotten a raise since then, but still, for a single person living alone things can be pretty tight sometimes.

I only have basic cable. :)
  • $100 per year? What was your rent???

Oh, never mind. I get it.
  • filmlover - what kind of software do you write for law firms?
  • i am a transporter :p. not really small time mover.
  • web ninja.
  • IT in the healthcare field. Now that I'm on a big team, loving it. Only girl for miles around =) the pay is good, real good.

The commute isn't too bad, shuttle to 4/5 to 6, off at 33rd and Park. At least it isn't bad when the trains are actually running and no one is yelling at each other (people are grumpy in the morning).

Mostly I develop links to move data between Time Matters (Case management) and other applications.

ahh, cool. good to know. I actually do lit support project management (yes, that's my real job - I'm no housewife, damn the world) so I'm always looking around for helpful contacts in the industry. but what you do sounds more like accounting/billing side work?

LOL! at the moment it is the glamorous world of desktop engineering... basically we make sure all the desktops (8000+) are standard, up-to-date, and images created.

My magical skills include typing quickly, organizing and ordering lunch, and making sure shit gets done. The slight case of OCD helps the most.
  • Business Development / Strategy for a web design + development studio.

Mostly Flash + Java dev stuff, but also mobile interface design and mobile ad campaign graphics and back-end development.

    I also make pancakes.
  • web design / production / marketing
like everybody else in the neighborhood :)

Actually, I've done some billing work but this is more case management, like who the lawyers are for a case, when the appearances are, motions, stuff like that. Utterly dull, but it pays some of the bills.

    Ah yes.

Just going through the motions, then.

  • Currently temping--pay sucks, but low stress and people will say all kinds of stuff around temps that they might not say otherwise. Plus I get to see a slice of a lot of places.

Formerly a research tech in biology (officially and assay development scientist/high-throughput tech). Interesting work and coworkers, good vacations to make up for the low pay.

Future--I want to shift to public health. Help, suggestions appreciated :D

I have to fess up -- I just checked out your website. I LOVE your stuff! Also: Yay, bunnies!
  • Work for a major Management Consulting firm, the job is very interesting/challenging (I get to travel stay in fancy hotels and wine and dine clients at exclusive restaurants at least once a month and I love it!)the pay is good. At this point I can't complain.
  • for the last three years I was a journalist at a nationally published magazine. it was challenging, fun, creative work with many perks, but the salary was not one of 'em. i recently left for another gig as editor/writer that pays much better, but i find myself bored to tears. so it goes. but now i don't have to travel 25x/year and i have more time with my family. free time is when i am creative now...
  • subprime mortagages hound me by day, learning to be a PA at night.
  • I am a textile designer. I worked for Victoria Secret for a bit (they use very little print though) which has left such a bad taste that I do not buy any product made by Limited Brands (super sheistiness going on there). I've done childrens wear, womens, home furnishings. Right now I am working as a knit designer for a mens label. Knits are pretty boring, but I am able to teach at Parsons in their fashion program which is fun. Between the corporate boring job and teaching I make enough to support my husband who stays home w/my children. We bought our co-op in '03 before the prices in PH went nuts. My mortgage payment is less than what I was paying when I was renting up the block. We lucked out!!!! When my husband goes back to work after the kids are off to school, I expect we will be living a little less closely on the edge.

Cool, you gonna knit with us this winter? I'm re-starting some Stitch-n-Bitch meet ups in PH in October (fall into spring). Was a bit slack last year, but I'm gonna do a more formal Meetup.com group list.

Oh, I design Corporate ID, Corp. collateral and Packaging Systems and when... ZZZZZzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzz. Huh? Try the knitting.
  • Funny thing! I can design a men's sweater but cannot actually do more than a Jersey/Pearl knit. But, I'm down for knittin and btchn! Scarves are cool!
  • Rockin! I'm also trying to get a band to use the same night for rehearsal. It beats books on tape. Or does it?
