Car towing/theft on Prospect Place?
My car's gone missing on Prospect Place, but it doesn't seem to be in any of the city's databases (not at the Navy Yard, no record of the Marshals towing it). I've filed a police report, but I suspect that the city towed it and just screwed up the records (I did have some outstanding tickets).
Does anyone recall seeing any NYPD towing taking place on Prospect Place, near Underhill, yesterday or early this morning? Either that or somebody hotwiring a Subaru in front of 300 Prospect Place?
Thanks.

That really sucks.
Im not sure if it was yesterday or Tuesday but when I was leaving for work a red tow truck was towing a car from the corner of Bergen and Underhill. The school's crossing guard ran over to the driver and started talking to him. You might want to ask her if she has seen the tow truck around again.
Did you happen to see any glass on the ground where it was parked? Thats pretty much a sure sign that your car was stolen.
Hope you get it back soon -
Nobody steels subarus. You probably blocked the driveway across from the Parking Garage.
-
I agree w/the statement about Subarus. There are a zillion in this neighborhood. It's usually the Toyota/Honda makes that they go after.
If you have an EZ pass you can check w/them about recent activities. If the car was driven to another borough they would have to pay a toll (besides mahattan of course).
Let us know how it turns out! I'm feeling for ya. That kind of situation would drive me nutz!!!! -

The guy is just looking for his car. People DO steal Subarus. Save your all knowing insight for when you know wtf you're talking about. He absolutely was not parked in front of a parking garage. -
I do know what im talking about, and if u read what I wrote you'd see that I said ACROSS FROM THE PARKING GARAGE. Theres a parking lot there where they tow your car if you block the driveway. Thanks

years ago i had a toyota that was stolen and the cops said the same thing - but why? easy to steal? parts to sell?
my car was found in east new york and said to be used in a crime, but i had to pay to bail it out - the parking ticket the car thief got was however dismissed. donuts and tropical sodas everywhere in the returned car...
anyway, i'm curious about why they go for toyotas/hondas. -
Toyotas and Honda last for ever, its not uncommon to see a 1990 camry still on that road. Parts for these cars can be expensive so its often easier to steal the entire car for a part and sell or use the remaining salvagable parts.

I drive between Brooklyn and Queens on a daily basis and never pay a toll. And I think the 3rd ave bridge in Manhattan is toll-free. EZ-pass could reveal something but it's unlikely.

Last year I was towed from Lincoln Place (between Washington & Underhill) to a privately owned lot in Red Hook, very near 9th St and Smith and the entrance/exit to Battery Tunnel. Unfortunately I don't have their info, but perhaps the cops would know. Maybe they're the ones who knicked your car.

Not to the Navy Yard impound lot?
That's very odd. -
If you block a private driveway then a privately owned company may tow your vehicle.
-
Thanks for all the comments, but no sign of the car yet. It wasn't blocking a driveway; I had it right in front of 300 Prospect Place, on the Tu-Fri side. Izisharp, do you know why your car was towed to Red Hook? Maybe I should track down that lot.

Sucky. I hope you find your car soon. -

If i were you I'd call the local police precinct and ask what info they have for tow companies in Red Hook. I was parked in front of an invisible residential driveway, so a private tower took my car. I ultimately got the info from the police precinct. Ya never know.. it could be there. -
also check with the ny finance site for parking tickets. sometimes they would just repark your car a few blocks away or something. or kids joy ride it and leave it park on the streets. and you'll get tons of parking tickets.

The car was found! A block away on Prospect btw Underhill and Washington, with a note on the windshield from someone named Joseph saying that he has my key and that I should give him a call (I'd lost a set the week before the car got stolen; assumed it was just somewhere in the house, but aparently it must've been dropped on the street or, worse, left beside the car.) Joseph was even thoughtful enough to provide his phone number.
Car is in fine shape, just a bit of trash inside. Seems to have been out on a weeklong joy ride. -
Man! Can't even begin to ponder what went through your head when you saw the car parked there....and then spotting the note!?!? Glad you got the car back, even if it is a little trashy inside. This will be a great story to tell the GrandK's about someday.
-
okay. this is the most bizarre story ever.
-
Um... I hate to be so cynical, but I wonder how big of a reward Joseph's going to expect?

UN-believable. I'd sell it -- I imagine i'd feel too violated to continue driving it. -
Thats just plain creepy! O.o I'm glad you found your car..but still! Use caution when you go to meet this Joseph person...it's all so bizarre!

Don't forget the infinite number of keys this person could have made/passed around to friends. -
Sounds fishy, to joy ride around and return it to the same block with a note?
-
Did you call 911 or the precinct to report that you located your vehicle? I hope you did becuase there is an "alarm" placed on your car until such a time that the vehicle is recovered. An alarm is like a "be on the lookout" so if your plates ever get run by police a message will pop up saying that the car is stolen. Drivers of stolen cars don't often get treatly very nicely by police which is why you need to let them know that you found the car.
-
Yes, and make sure that your car didn't get any tickets while it was missing.
-
check for tickets and make sure you tell the cops you found your car. and sell your car cause you never know what they done with your car. they could of stash drugs or done evil things in them.
-
prospecter...?
did you return from joseph o.k.? -
he got his organs stolen :O or is human food now.
-
I'm curious to hear what happened too. If he doesn't check back in soon maybe I'll PM him.
Howdy, Stranger!
