öko yogurt - heading downhill? — Brooklynian

öko yogurt - heading downhill?

As much as I love Oko (and boy, do I love it), I'm getting increasingly disillusioned by the place. I've heard that the owner was unhappy with the amount of toppings being given and ordered the staff to scale back their generosity. Last night, we saw this when my partner ordered a regular (ie, medium) with raspberries and got a grand total of SEVEN berries. Seven. My toppings, while less sparse, were still solidly on the unsatisfying side.

Now, I know rent on 5th Ave is expensive and that things like berries aren't cheap this time of year, but the stinginess with the toppings is a huge, huge turnoff. I can't justify shelling out almost $12 for yogurt to end up with seven berries.

Oko, are you listening?

  • even more simply, why is the mini yogurt priced so that, with tax, it adds up to $3.26? $3.25 would be a nice, convenient figure; i reach into my wallet, pull out three singles, reach into my pocket, pull out a quarter, and voila, transaction completed. but $3.26? now i need to dig out a quarter and a penny!
  • LOL. I know, the trials and tribulations we face in Park Slope. Seven berries?!?
  • Well, the last time i went there I got about 7 berries too, but they were VERY large raspberries, so I thought it was ok. Any more would have fallen out of the cup.
So have they cut back on the size of the berries too?
  • I went last night and had blueberries (which I always get) and there were at least 20. Half the time one or two falls over the edge because they give so many.

Not sure why they are stingy with you.

I love this place and hope they are continuing to do well.

Too many Park Slope establishments go under because the clientele seem to think that we deserve everything perfect and that it's our way or the highway. I've always thought that the amount of toppings was nearly to the point of being excessive. It's the yogurt I come for...I can get blueberries anywhere.

How about next time asking if you can have a couple more berries, instead of complaining about it on this message board, possibly scaring people away from going...?
  • 12 bucks for ice cream is just dumb. Ya'll crazy.

Maybe that is true, but maybe we do deserve everything to be perfect. I mean, it is NYC so if a place wants to do a shitty job (not suggesting that that's the case here, but I mean more generally speaking) then I am quite certain there are several other businesses ready to step up and do a better job. It's capitalism, baby. Besides, for the price these yogurt places charge, I want a friggin backrub with my $6 TCBY.

How about next time asking if you can have a couple more berries, instead of complaining about it on this message board, possibly scaring people away from going...?
But that's one of the things I love about this board. It's a good place to voice your ideas, complaints, compliments or general BS. I personally found the post interesting, and it made me remember that place exists and now I wanna go there.
  • I walked by this place on tuesday night and was completely freaked out by it. not sure why. too bright? weird crowd of people hanging out outside? I was in a hurry so I didn't investigate but perhaps next tuesday, when I venture into the slope again, I'll pop in and see what all of the fuss is about.

is the yogurt really sweet? I hate overly sweet desserts.
  • I can see your point also, but Park Slope...5th and 7th avenue still has way too many vacancies. The last thing we need is one of the more interesting places to close up shop because they skimped on someone's berries.

Sure...this is a great place to voice concerns if the owners actually read it. But if they don't, it is also an option to just mention something to them face to face. Might make more of an impression.

Part of the problem with the advent of the internet age is our increasing inabilty to be able to connect with people face to face. It's really easy to say....hey...can I have a couple more berries, but sadly, it's even easier to write about it here.

If the economy takes a little tumble...which it looks like it could...I would hate to see some of these places along here close up...we might be in for a period soon where there are actually NOT a ton of people waiting to take Oko's spot.

I see places all along here and 7th that seem to have had their for rent signs out for a year. It's a concern.
  • It's not overly sweet. That's why I like it so much.

It's similar to the Fage Greek Yogurt...but frozen.

They have some other flavors as well, but I always go for the regular. It's quite delicious, and I'm not really a dessert person...
  • From a neighborhood that's willing to pay 3 bucks for one of Uncle Louie G's 'authentic' Brooklyn Italian ices, I don't think Park Slope's consumer sensibilities are going to save it anytime soon.

    Agreed. valid point.

Just for the record, I love Oko. I started the original pro-Oko post on this board. If Oko closed, I would be seriously distraught.

That said, I'm with Dave... Oko aint cheap, and seven berries is pretty skimpy by any measure. Now, like I said in my post, this wasn't on MY yogurt; if it had been I would have definitely said something. My partner, for whatever reason, didn't feel like bringing it up.

I wouldn't have posted anything about this except for the fact that I was specifically told that the owner had ordered a scale-back on the toppings.

Now, I did my time at TCBY in high school and know a thing or two about what makes a good iced dessert treat. Call it my pet peeve, but I don't see any reason why it can't be discussed on this board. Maybe the owner can come to explain the thin profit margins that necessitate scaling back the berries... I'd be down with that.
  • And, Belzjm, I'm with you on the problem of finding good tenants and keeping them in the Slope. We've got way too much mediocre retail (Tutta Pasta, I'm looking 'atcha). I will, in fact, say something the next time I go to Oko. I just need to find out who the owner is.
  • I feel unfaithful even reading this thread - I'm totally monogamous and Pinkberry is my one true fro-yo love - can't help it - I know it exposes my shallowness. Although I am cheating as I write this with Fairway-purchased 2% Fage & blackberries!

May I ask how many blackberries you've given yourself?

Seriously though, I think Oko is waaaaaaay better than PB. Just a better, edgier flavor. Of course, I still go to PB religiously whenever I'm in LA.
  • I LOVE pinkberry, and don't care if that somehow makes me shallow or evil or vile or smelly or uppity or urban or a circus clown or a gentrifier, or a truck driver or an astronaut or a leprechaun.

I really need to try oko though.

Nah, it isn't the double digit yogurt that makes you those things, it is the three thousand dollar bicycle.
  • From my experience, devout Pinkberry fans end up liking Oko better....

Sorry to jump all over you 8thandPrez....I was mometarily overcome with fear that this place would do poorly and leave. I'm sorry.

As I said, I'm not a dessert person, but I LOVE this place.

Usually I'll go down and eat it while walking home and by the time I get back, it's gone and I contemplate going back for another.

I think there might be crack in the secret recipe.

    Hahahahaha probably very true.
  • I just got back from Rice to Riches, which I ducked into on my way to Pinkberry (they're next to each other, so I went to R2R instead). Anyway, it's not as good as pinkberry. It get's old fast, too sweet to eat it all.
Also, what the hell am I supposed to do with the fancy plastic container they give you? Can I re-use that? Seems like a TERRIBLE waste to toss it. It can't possibly be biodegradable.

I should have stuck with Pinkberry.

Funny thing, I went into pinkberry with my r2r bag to meet my co-workers who stopped in, and the frendly man behind the counter told me that his mom told him that rice to riches causes ghonorehea. I'm not joking, he really said this.
    funny service.

    10 - they were enormous!

Other products secretly containing crack: Original Popcorn, Indiana Kettle Corn from Whole Foods - gotta, gotta, gotta have it!

  • it's funny - i cant understand how people like frozen yogurt - i know my opinion means nothing - but i think its yucky yucky - is it just a caloric thing?
  • Oko is my favorite, I NEED it. I LOVE it. I think it kicks Pinkberrys ass. Every time I've gotten Oko, the counter person puts as many berries, or fruit as will fit in the space between the cup and the yogurt. Every time. I will have it again in the enxt few days and see if this has changed. Even if it has, I don't care. I go for the yogurt, not the fruit. BTW, anyone tried the "golden berries"? They're Gooseberries! Deliciously sour and weird! MMMM! I've never even seen them for sale anywhere.
  • oko is the bomb
  • I thought about this thread today, and popped by tonight for my usual: an original flavor, regular size, one topping.

Now I know what you're talking about. The amount of yogurt was literally HALF of what I've been served each and every time {about 30+} before. There was a thin cord of it spun around the inside edge of the cup, and about an inch and a half of EMPTY SPACE inside my cup! It was covered by a swirl on top so you couldn't see there was nothing there until you ate down. I got exactly 6 gooseberries.

    It cost $4.89.

I'm not happy. The reduction of product is too extreme, and they're not fooling anyone. Oko is going to lose customers by being stingy, myself among them. Makes me sad. :?
  • Next time you're there and that happens to you - SAY SOMETHING! Whenever I get less (by far) than what I have gotten in the past, I comment and they almost always increase the serving...
If you're that upset, you should tell them. It not only gets you what you want (probably), it helps them with their business.
  • Twelve dollars for yogurt is ridiculous.
  • I think the $12 price tag referred to multiple yogurts. Their "regular" size is $4 something, and it is a generous serving. My fiancé and I shared one this afternoon, with mango - and they didn't skimp on the topping.

They seemed to be doing good business today, which is great... at least the long summer is good for that!
  • I didn't realize my cup was empty in the middle till I had eaten half of it, and I also don't feel like I should have to ask for more, it's embarrassing. I noticed the meager amount of berries because it had been mentioned here. As I said, I've had the gooseberries numerous times and the count was far more.

BTW, I have been waited on by the same counter guy before, and the serving size was always more than adequate. At this point I do believe they're cutting the serving size down significantly. At least they did mine that night.

    I'm not "upset", I'm annoyed.
  • if it's something having to do with the management requiring a cut back, we should say something and bring it to his/her attention that it seems too drastic.

thing is, i went last night and had no difference from my usual (huge portion and no less than 20 blueberries). i've had it 30 plus times...

it's leading me to believe it might be the counter help, and not the management since we seem to be hearing differences in who he decides to give a small/large portion to...
