Is it park slope? — Brooklynian

Is it park slope?

kosherdave
edited November -1 in Park Slope
Hey, my office mate is moving to park slope. Or, at least close. It's around 15th street on 7th. Is that Park Slope still? I think it is crossing 15th street but I am not sure.
What else would it be? Windsor Terrace? Greenwood Heights or something?

  • If you ask a realtor, it is Park Slope. If you ask me, the proper answer would be South Slope.
  • Is South Slope a real name, or a Realtor name?

No Man's land or Woman's land.

The border of Park Slope sneaks further up...used to be third street, then 9th street, then Prospect Ave, now 23rd Street (really? no, come on, really?).

I do know that it's an awesome neighborhood, wherever it is.
  • South Park Slope...but what's in a name :)

Definitely NOT considered Greenwood Hts. You have to cross the expressway to be in my 'hood. You are welcome, as long as you behave ;)
  • How can 15 street and 7th ave be South Slope when two blocks up
    its Prospect Park West?

In the Mid-nineties when the realators took over park slope they divided it
by all these new names just to make it more fancy...in my opinion.

wait... huh? what do you think it is, then?
  • I thought the official Park Slope perimeters were Flatbush to 16th from the park to 3rd ave.

    Is that right?
  • 4th ave to the west, park the the east, flatbush to the north, expressway to the south. and 8ave to the south west.
  • All I know is that they're right by Cafe Steinhoff, and that will result in mouthsfull of yummy food.

Who cares what neighborhood its in when kielbasa is involved?
  • south slope is a fake name.

oh yeah? did your mother actually name you joseph11? methinks that's a fake name, too!

    (joking, of course)

south slope is not a separate nabe from park slope, Dave. guess the rich folks from the north end of the slope had to divide themselves from the working class folks from the south somehow!
  • I would very much consider that park slope- my friend loves down there bt 15-16 on 7th and there's tons of stuff- places to eat, shop, groceries, wine shops etc... when he moved there I never hesitated to consider it park slope proper, even if it is "south slope." Are neighborhoods getting so myopic that they're 6 blocks now?
  • south slope is park of park slope.

your friend is in park slope!!! screw the elitist :p.
  • The Park Slope Historic District extends to the backyards of 15th Street, albeit in a tiny slice near PPW. Said historic district was designated in 1973, so I've gotta think that at least one part of 15th Street has been Park Slope for a long time.

    a vegetarian maybe? j/k
  • Try the spaetzle, then. A vegetarian's delight. I'll take your sausage.

You can find several different perimeters depending on where you look and how badly you want to be able to say that you live in "Park Slope", how badly you want to deny that you live there or how badly you want to sell an apartment in "Park Slope".

I have a coworker on 23rd who insists that he is in "Park Slope" even though I tell him it's Greenwood Heights which didn't exist when I lived here 20 years ago and when South Slope started on 9th Street.

I currently live on the Edge of both neighborhoods or in one or the other, I'm not sure. I don't care. I love it here.

Reminds me of when a coworker moved to my town. "You moved to Montclair", I said excitedly! "Upper Montclair", he replied somewhat snootily. I didn't have the heart to tell him that it was the same town - the only difference being the zip code and a few snotty people like him.

depending on the source you might find "15th st to the south"
because the park ends at 15th
and on ppw 15th is bartel pritchard -
the other side of which is windsor terrace.

but then the little strip in between in between is effectively rendered nameless.

in my mind that hood will always be"lauterbach"
    but thats me ;)

    anyone remember Franks Museum ?

Yeah right. Tell them to knock on my door and tell me that...

Which realitor told them that BS. If anything, I'd accept the "dead end" of Park Slope, since 23rd St has Green-Wood across the street ;)

I will not digress further. Search the boards for Greenwood Heights and you'll see my many diatribes and factual proof of the name of the area, dating back to the 1800's

theoryofpractice, thanks for the great map. Saving that one!

Oh, man; now you've brought back memories! When I lived at 7th & 12th there was hardly a Saturday night that didn't find me ambling over to that excellent joint. Three or four bands for around 4 bucks (at least one of which was always worth listening to), the display case with the craziest shit for sale, $2 Budweisers, and Alice's home-made fries, and her dog that ran off with a band. When Alice split (and, God knows, who could blame her?) and the running of the place fell to her worse half, it sadly fell apart. Sure we've got Southpaw and that obnoxious joint on Union, but, in my mind, the demise of Lauterbach's coincided with The Slope becoming "so over".

Sorry to aid and abet the thread hijacking.

LOL. I've argued with him and argued with him. He's a stubborn one. I did see an ad in Craigs list this weekend advertising a place on 23rd as the edge of Park Slope. I think that it was on the other side of the Cematary too, which was really strange.

Is that the place on Prospect where the Pub sign is still up?
  • Subject: Park slope wannabe

I'm looking to buy in a neighborhood that is soon to be Park Slope, any ideas

oh man that's nothin. i saw a craigslist ad for an apartment "right in South Slope!" which apparently now includes an apartment on 45th St and 3rd Ave.

    ?

Sure the park can end on 15th Street, but the hill's slant flattens on 11th Street. If you walk to the park from 7th Avenue up 9th Street -- where I thought Park Slope ended -- you're still walking up a slope. If you walk up 11th Steet from 8th Avenue to the park, there is much less of an incline. Test it by stepping outside of your apartment and walking to the Park.

If you don't live on the slope of the park, you could be in Gowanus, Windsor Terrace, Sunset Park, or in Green-wood Cemetery.
