  • Hello All, Well Prodigalson, I really know very little about E NY. I remember there was a subway stop there but that is about all. When we wanted to play baseball in Park Slope it was either at Park Circle (AKA Parade Grounds) or and empty lot on 10th St just below 5th Ave , where they built the subway going back undergraound after the 9th St station above ground like the EL. Stickball was right in front of my house on 12th St. The sewer at 310-12th was home plate. The next sewer at about 326 was second and the few cars we had in those days were 1st & 3rd. If no cars (quite often) we just marked 1st & 3rd base with chaulk. We also played Boxball, Triangle and "Off the Point". Any sport was up for grabs. In the winter we played football with a football made up of wet newspapers wrapped tightly OOps, got to take my wife for a test-Bye all
  • Hi friends
    Hope everyone is well.
    Enjoy your night!
    :)
  • Hope everyone enjoys their weekend!
Expecting alot of rain here in NY
    Tomorrow.
My daughter Toniann is in Arizona for a week.
She & her college team were invited there to compete against 8 other softball teams.
    She's having a great time.
    Great experience & fun too!!!
    :)

  • Hello All, We have had an incredible week here in Tampa Bay. Temps in the 80,s every day. Very little rain. Only negative is a lot of POLLEN. Our car is supposed to be Maroon. Last two weeks it has been a cross between yellow & green, Baseball is in full swing here. The Yankees play in Tampa, the Phillies & Blue Jays in Clearwater, the Pirates in Bradenton, the Tigers in Lakeland etc: Patsy, the Mets train on the East coast of Florida. Sounds like your Daughter is having a ball. Good for her. Enjoy life to the fullest when you are young. When you get to be an Old Goat like me you are very limited. Tomorrow I will assist in our Church Service and I just got the word the other day that I am writing a sermon on Joshua and will present it Palm Sunday in two places!
  • Hi everyone.

First and foremost, let me say,  Happy St Patrick's Day!

Glad to know everyone is doing fine and am especially glad to see that Spring has arrived for much of the USA. It was 70F here on Saturday!

Off the point = stoop ball.  Yes, I enjoyed that game so much.  Box ball as I recall it was a type of ''tennis'' using your hands to hit the ball in between boxes from the asphalt lines on the sidewalk.  That, too, was lots of fun. Can't say I recall triangle unless it was the game in which we shot basketball up to 21 points.  That was a game we called 21.  Though I couldn't play bball, I was a decent shooter and won my share of those games.

Goat wrote, "In the winter we played football with a football made up of wet newspapers wrapped tightly "

Ah!  You remind me of how we made footballs = my mom was a seamstress and she used a number of cone shaped  spindles made of cardboard.  When she discarded them my brother and I would wrap wet newspapers around them, seal  them with  paper tape, and used a small amount of black electric tape for the ends.

Re church - I do not attend church services but do post regularly on a Christian website. As a literary scholar I have a few views on biblical teaching that do not exactly square with conventional ideas accepted by the majority of Christians.  Therefore, I use that forum to exchange ideas and interpretations about Scripture and its relevance to modern living.

By the way, does anyone here read "Reminisce",  "Good Old Days", and "Grit"?  These magazines make for wholesome reading.

    Enjoy!  :)

    Hello All,

We had a hell of a good St Paddy's day party. Yes, Old Goats know how to celebrate too. Carol & I danced just about every dance. I had a few small glasses of Green Beer. The big difference with older folks is that the party ends quite early. I even did an Irish Jig. Not very good though.

Prodigal Son, just to clear up a few things. Box ball was not like tennis at all. We drew 1st, 2nd, and 3rd bases as well as home plate in a box about 15 feet between each base. You hit the ball with your hand and ran like hell trying to get on base before you were thrown out. Just like stick ball but on a smaller level. Triangle was the same idea but if you did not have enough people to cover all the bases, you just drew Home , 1st & 3rd and played the same as Boxball.
Question, I am not trying to be a smart ass but what is a literary scholar?
I read the AARP magazine, NARFE magazine and James Patterson's books.
  • Hey Goat  - we played similar games but for the life of me cannot remember the name of those games.  Of course, there was one old cat  from which baseball was derived and I had a great time playing that as well.

Literary scholar?  I was blessed to have Professor Hughes at NYC Tech and Professor Malcolm Bosse at CCNY.  The latter was Chairman of the English Dept,  told me I was his best student, and promised that if I ever chose to go for an MA in English he would get me into any graduate program of my choice. Couldn't even begin to tell you how many classmates asked me to assist them in editing their term papers as an undergraduate and in law school (where such writings are called outlines) - some even offered to pay me for my services. But it was a pleasure to help and I never accepted so much as one cent in those efforts.

And, as always, it's a pleasure to hear from you.

    Happy Spring Time!

  • Hi friends
    Thank you Warren
    Toniann had a great time!
They won 5 out of 8 games.
Next year, if God willing, playing ball in San
    Antonio, Texas!!

    Hi Richard,
Hope all is well with you.
    We had snow yesterday here.
    No biggie
    Melting as I write this.
Hope everyone has a great weekend
I have a baby shower today!
    :)
  • Hi patsy & all the good folks here in Brooklynian.

We also had snow - about 3 inches but they got about 9-12" further south.  We're not complaining, though, as the grounds are terribly dry and we need to moisture, especially for the ball fields and agriculture.

    Enjoy your baby shower.    :)

    Everyone have a Wonderful Week,
  • Hello, Prodigalson,

Talk to u all before Easter!!

  • Hello
Sorry for my absence but we had to leave our apartment (and computer) while they did a great deal of work in our kitchen & bathrooms. We now have new tile floors in the two bathrooms, the kitchen and the hall (w/closets.) Before we left we had to empty all the kitchen cabinets and the bathroom vanity bottoms so they could laminate the doors with a very attractive wood look. We did not know they were going to do the closets so they emptied them for us. What a mess. When we get everything put away the place will look grand. The management of the Courtyards (our senior apartments) provided us with a guest apartment that is usually used for out of state guests of residences. All this came about because of a leak from the dishwasher. They replaced the dishwasher and that leaked also. Slit hose. Now we are back in our apartment and trying to get it straightened out. Love to all.--Goat
  • Hello, Prodigalson,

Great that you got him that very wholesome magazine - it always makes for excellent reading.

By gosh, it is difficult to believe there is all that snow in the Northeast.  I watch college lacrosse online just about every day and every game in the region has backgrounds with tons of snow!  Here in Minnesota we reached 70F and there isn't a micro inch of snow anywhere.

I hope all remains very well for each of you in God's Country and elsewhere.   :)
  • Hi guys
    Judy thinking of you guys.

    Warren
Very nice. Brand new & updated.
    Enjoy!

    Hi Richard

Tomorrow & Friday will be in the 60's

Happy Easter & Passover to all!

To our Christian friends, A blessed Easter and please remember what we are really celebrating tomorrow: The resurrection of our Lord Jesus Christ. I see nothing wrong with the bunnies and the colored eggs as long as we remember
what the real purpose of the day is. To our Jewish friends, Have a blessed Passover. Remember all of you that the Last Supper was a Passover meal. Without the Passover meal there is no Crucifixion or Resurrection. When I was teaching Sunday School years ago in Bergenfield NJ, I invited the local Rabbi to come to our class and help us perform a Seder. We also went to the Temple where the Rabbi gave our students a tour of the Temple and explained all the religious signifigence of the items in the Temple. I bet some of those Sunday School students (all adults now) still remember those experiences. If we could only get Christians, Jews and Moslems to sit down together and compare religions, I bet they would be more amazed at the similarities then the differences.
  • Hi friends
Hope everyone had a beautiful Easter
Warren, you're so right about our religions.
    So many similarities.
    Everyone, enjoy your day!
    :)
  • Hey folks! Give a warm welcome to @Longo who just posted about his family and their bar here:

Having been drug up a few blocks away from most of you, the bars I remember were Murphys 5th Ave between 13th & 14th Street, Finnertys, 13th St & 6th Ave, Loftus, 11th St & 5th Ave, Mike Goldens, 5th Ave & 13th St. There were several bars on 5th Ave between 8th & 9th St but I never went to them and do not remember most of their names. Of course there was Loonies on 15th and Bartel Pritchard Square (they also owned an Ice Cream parlor next door and one on PPW & 9th St.) They used to call Brooklyn the "City of Trees", "The City of Churches" and I would add the city of BARS. On a Friday night when you had enough to drink (or when the bars closed at 3AM), you could go to Bickfords on 9th St just above 5th Ave and have a big breakfast. Oh, those were the days. If I tried any of that now, Carol would get the call to pick me up at the hospital!
  • I did not mean to scare everyone away with my entry regarding the neighbor hood bars. Also, the term "been drug up" was merely a replacement for "raised" and had nothing to do with drugs. In fact, when I was growing up, I never heard of drugs on my block, in school or anywhere else. I guess I led a sheltered life! I also want you to understand that I spent more time in Germains then I did in the bars. I know I spent more time in the Twelfth Street Reformed Church then I did in bars so come back on folks. I did not mean to scare any of you away!!!!!
  • Hi friends
    Lol
Warren you didn't scare us away.
I think everyone Is busy & hopefully enjoying the nice weather!
    Hope all is well
    Everyone, enjoy your day!!
