  • Hi all
    Anna, glad you posted!
    Sounds like you're enjoying Florida
Cannot believe you're there a year now.
Hope you & the family are well.
We've been getting Fla weather here in NY
    The last few days!
It was a long winter here.
    Everyone, enjoy your weekend.
    :)

  • My grandson, Gavin.
    He's hot stuff!
    Can't believe he's a year & a half already!!
    :)
  • Hey Patsy, your Gavin is the spitting image of one of my grandchildren when he was that age! Now he is 14 and the second youngest of all our grandchildren. There are 7 of them ranging from 23-11. Time flies even faster when you get older!!! Two of them already graduated college, two in college and the others not that far behind. We do not get to see them very often. That is one of the penalties when you move 1200 miles away. I see Donald Trump and the Governor of NJ want to be President. Neither would carry Florida. Weather here has been hot, rainy & humid. Normal for this time of year.
  • Hi friends
Warren, it must be hard not being able to see your family often.
I only have Gavin as far as grandchildren & get to see him everyday!
    What a joy!!
I will miss him when my daughter & son in law move one day.
Not sure who or if I'm even voting for.
Not crazy for any of them.

    Everyone, have a great weekend!
    :)
  • Happy Fourth of July Weekend

Looking forward to the Nathan's Hot Dog eating contest, and continued online  coverage of Henley Regatta  and Wimbledon.

    Enjoy!

Hello All, I follow Tennis pretty regularly when I can get it on ESPN or ESPN2. I will NOT pay for the Tennis Channel. My only complaints so far watching Wimbledon is the officiating which I feel leans very much to the top ranked Men's players and other times I think they just can't see the lines!. I think Serena will go all the way but her sister Venus has seen better times playing. The blood disease Venus has that robs her energy levels is not helping. When are we going to get an American Male to dominate or at least show signs of being a star? The closest to that was Andy Roddick who has retired. Unfortunately I do not see any Agassi's or Sampras on the Horizon. I had high hopes for a few of them but they have all faded. Sock has a chance but only a slight one.
  • Hi friends,
Hope everyone had a great 4th!
Warren, I do not follow tennis.
I know all the names you have mentioned,
But it is a sport I cannot connect with.
Hope everyone has a great night.
    :)

  • Hello All,
Patsy, I feel the same way about soccer. I find it to be the most boring sport in the world. It is a good participant sport for kids since all they do is run up & down the field! The game that the American Women won the other night was about exciting to me as watching the grass grow. To all you people who say it is the most popular sport in the world, I say take a look at where it is popular. It is certainly not in the USA.
  • Hey dac545, welcome to the blog. We could argue about this topic till hell freezes over and not come to a conclusion. History however has proven that soccer has never overtaken Football or Baseball in fan interest in the USA. Considering my back round in Ancestry is Scottish you would think I would be very interested in soccer. As I said before, it is a good sport for kids due to the lack of pressure to be a star and there is room for all and there is great exercise involved. Watching it at 81 is quite a challenge to stay awake!

    Hi friends
    Warren, God bless you.
    81. I hope I have your energy. & live to be 81...
    Have a great weekend, everyone.

  • Since the BLOG right now seems like that great noted book "All quiet on the western front', I THOUGHT A LITTLE NONSENSE COULD NOT HURT. True story #1 Red Hook Pool= On a hot summers day some of us on 12th street would decide to go swimming. It was Red Hook or Sunset Park Pool. One day about 6 of us walked down to Red Hook Pool and spent most of the day there. The AM session was free. The afternoon session was about 10 cents. On the way home one of my goofy friends decided that the Gowanus Canal looked cool and he jumped in! I do not think I have to tell you what was in the Gowanus. Anyway he lived to tell about it and when he came out of the canal we just continued our walk home.
Story #2 Another hot day we went to Sunset Park Pool. When we passed Greenwood Cemetery on the way home one of our geniuses said "Hey, there is a lake in there, lets take another swim." Only one brave soul joined him and they climbed over the fence on 5th Ave and went for a swim in the lake. The rest of us said "No Thanks". We did not want to swim with the dead!". Sounds like "A Midsummers Nightmare".
  • A friend of mine used to have a sailboat which he kept at a marina in Tarrytown. I went sailing with him on the Huson River several times. Each time we went sailing, I would dive from the boat into the river for a refreshing swim. While the Gowanus may be even worse, the Hudson is also considered so polluted that you should not eat fish from the river. I can only imagine how many PCB's now reside in my liver.
  • Hi guys
    Warren & Booklaw great stories.
I loved sunset park pool. Lived on 20th street
Walked home from pool b/c we spent bus fare money on 3 ring pretzel & drink.
Those were the days my friends......
I loved the 16 ft pool & was a good swimmer. That diving board,,......
    Great memories....

    Weather was crazy here today.
Lots of thunder, some lightning & lots of rain.
Tomorrow will be a nicer day!

    Have a great night!!

    Hi guys
    Hope everyone is doing well!
Up to almost 100 degrees here
    With humidity even hotter
This is why I like the winter
I rather deal with the cold rather than
    The hot weather...
    Stay cool...

Oh for the summer days in Prospect Park. Cool grass under your feet, the good Humor man with the pack on his back selling delicious Creamcicles. Or the beach at Coney Island with the waves breaking over your body to cool you off. Yes, there were ways of cooling off in good old Brooklyn. When we got older there was always a cold draft beer at your favorite tavern or perhaps a Tom Collins...or two.
  • Have a great weekend!
    :)
  • I'm excited.
    Tomorrow in the old neighborhood,
    7th ave reunion.
Beer garden on 20th st & 7th Ave.
I lived right across the street & left in
    1988 to Bay Ridge.
Beer Garden was the gas station.
    How things have changed.
Going to see some old friends..
    Can't wait.
    :)
  • Hiya Friends!

Re ladies soccer, a couple of weeks ago I went to the sports grounds at the West St Paul Sports Complex to see a game of under 20 years olds play - how I wish this game was shown on TV! It was every bit as intense as any college game I have ever seen.  And that's just it - for those who do not understand the sport, I promise you if you go to a live event, it is FAR more exciting than it appears on tv.

Not as beautiful or artistic as synchronized swimming (scene from recent Pan Am games):

    but intense!

patsy - remember what I wrote above sour cream pancakes?  Well, I now tried making them and breakfast muffins with mayonnaise and find that these are even more flavorful than when using  sour cream!

Sports and food - my two biggest passions.   :)

Summer at Prospect Park - how I remember those moments with such great fondness.

    Everyone take very good care!

  • Prodigal Son,

My Brother played Soccer for LIU and I went to all the games he played. Found it boring then and I find it boring now! To each his own. I like professional Tennis and I know that a very large percentage of the population has no interest in Tennis. So be it! I like the NFL and MLB very much and in that I have a L O T of company.

    Hey all!

Goat ~ Richard Chinapoo (originally from Trinidad) lived in Brooklyn and played for LIU - a man who was all class both on and off the playing field. And I love WTA tennis.

Patsy ~ enjoy those mayo pancakes and breakfast muffins - esp if you add sweetened coco cream to them.  Mmmm, mmmm ~ what flavor!

    Everyone, have a wonderful week.
  • Prodigal- My brother played LIU soccer back in the 1950's. The only one I remember meeting was Ray Felix who played LIU Basketball! I like Serena at Tennis also. I keep hoping for a man to break through on the men's side but for now I root for our British Cousin Andy Murray.

Hello, Does anyone know how to turn the rain off for awhile? It has rained every day here for three weeks! There is flooding in many areas where there are rivers or streams that become rivers. In Pasco county (about 1&1/2 hours from here )the River overflowed and the alligators came with it. In some area they have gators swimming up and down the streets. Cars are floating in Tampa & St Petersburg. Pretty soon the cruise ships will be able to come to your door to pick you up. (slight exaggeration).

    Hi friends,
    Hi Warren
    That's a lot of rain.
We had some rain last night, but nothing compared to Fla.
Hope you all dry out soon!!

    Welcome, @joeplant_121 !
Nice to see new people post.
I grew up on 20th st across from the
    Chicken market, Btwn. 4&5th aves.
    In the 60's.
Still a Brooklynite. I now live in Bay Ridge
A few blocks up from the water. Love it here, but I wish we all just stayed in Park Slope. I go there occasionally, but it's so
    Different now.
I went to my sisters in manalapan nj
Over the weekend. Stayed Friday til
Sunday with my daughter & grandson
We went to Asbury Park, just beautiful!
My grandson had a ball in Asbury water
Park. So great for kids, & we had dinner on the boardwalk at a very nice restaurant.
    It was a great weekend.
Ok, friends enjoy the rest of your night.
I just got back from the gym, a cycling class
    & I'm exhausted.going to relax & watch some tv.
    :)

  • Hi Patsy, I replied to joe plant via the address line that MOD gave us. He lived fairly close to me. He was on 12th Street between 8th & 9th aves and I grew up on 12th Street near 6th avenue. As I said once before on the blog, we had so many people and kids living on our block that two avenues away was a different county! Even stickball. Each street between avenues had their own teams. The guys that played on 12th street between 6th & 7th aves had an outfielder in the middle of 6th ave. Can you imagine that with todays traffic! We played between sewers half way between 5th & 6th aves and the outfielders were still on "the block".
