UGGs in Park Slope?

  • When do they get freed from the awful grip of trendiness and become just another pair of boots?
  • Ugg boots are like Rupert Murdoch, and every bit as attractive. A gift to America from the antipodes.
  • I was thinking about this earlier. Do trendy things that are sensible like UGGs stay around more than non sensible things?

Using the seminal movie Flashdance as an unscientific example, legwarmers sort of never went away entirely, whereas the off the shoulder sweater has not been seen in nearly 20 years.

Oh yes they have. From an an article on trends in 2005:

    Flashbacks
One way to predict styles of the future is to look back at what was hip 20 years ago. For instance L.A. T Sportswear, Ball Ground, Ga., will offer new styles reminiscent of the 1980s. Remember the off-the-shoulder sweat shirts of Flashdance? Yep. They're back. Both AS Tees and L.A. T Sportswear are making the skin-revealing tops and complementing them with flouncey, above-the-knee skirts made from lightweight jersey fabric.

(And legwarmers definitely went away, although leggings did not.)

Really, as long as I get to use the phrase "Using the seminal movie Flashdance..." I'm pretty happy.
  • What a feeling!

When our children get to be teenagers and, having not lived through the trend the first time, think they're cool again.

The real problem with Uggs is that they're not actually flattering on anyone except models. When models in LA started wearing them, there was something sort of ironic about having such dumpy shoes on the ends of long, thin legs. But when ordinary-looking people wear them, they just look dumpy and make their legs look short. Pointy-toed high heels may be uncomfortable, but they're pretty flattering.
  • Subject: Chinese foot-binding fun

Everytime I've tried buying shoes in Park Slope, the stores are out of my size, so I end up going into Manhattan or ordering online. The David Z website below has the Ugg boots you want on its home page.

    http://davidzinc.stores.yahoo.net/

The Ugg boots you want look a lot more comfortable and durable than these ridiculous things on the same website:

    OH DEER JENNIFER
Sexy high heel platform short boot with bootback zipper
Leather upper. Split seam toe. Back zipper closure. Dressy synthetic red sole. 4 1/4" heel.

Why do some women cram their feet into these "sexy" things? It looks as fun as Chinese foot-binding.*

*I wrote "SOME" not "all," so please don't lynch me.

Huh? Wanderers of the internet? I thought this was a public PS board and I am asking a PS question. And, Union Square isn't exactly PS or WT. but, thanks for being such a friendly neighbor!

Public board? What are you talking about? You invaded us from the outside? How did you gain access to our secret society without our secret password and secret rule book?

Ya know, there ARE boots out there that are comfortable, functional, and durable without being a trend from hell.
  • okay, wasn't it voltaire who said "i disapprove of your shoes, but i will defend to the death your right to wear them"? something like that, anyway.

personally, i find uggs rather awful. but the OP asked a simple question; there's no call to be snotty. :(

if you can't find them in park slope and don't wish to go elsewhere, i'm sure you can find all sorts of them at zappos.com. you might also see if you like the few kinds they have at rei.com -- if you become a member, you'll get 10% of your purchase money back at the end of the year.
  • Sorry, my intent wasn't to be snotty to the original poster - I meant to address the "but it's comfortable!" (or functional) defense of clothing items, whether it's boots, or sweatpants worn as streetwear, or whatever ...
  • I won't be an enabler .......and I'm snotty

    Then Voltaire was nuts.
  • Who cares what they look like...they are so comfy!!!

You jes better be careful wearing them around here ... you think we're tough now, you shoulda been around back in the day when we were runnin with the Slingbacks. Times were tough, we were always battling the Versaces on the west and the HighTops in the east but we managed to survive.

Yeah, why bother with your appearance? This is Park Slope after all - it's onlty a matter of time before your entire wardrobe consists of Williams t-shirts and gym shorts (even when you have no intentions of going anywhere near a gym). Just give up and buy everything with an elastic waistband from now on--it's all downhill from here.

I agree. All of my pants are little more than long Huggies.
