Vanderbilt crime
So...
On Wed we had a murder at Indigo Blue and on Thurs a robbery of a dry cleaner.
2 black males, ages 16-18, entered Happy Cleaners and one of them simulated a gun through his coat pocket. They took all of the cash from the register and fled northbound on foot.
Get ready, folks. This time of year is know for robberies. People have holiday expenses coming.

Whoa. During the day someone robbed a cleaners? This is scary.
I haven't lived here too long but I really love it although I am not down with all the crime and murder I've been reading about on the boards. That is really horrible.
I would imagine better /nicer weather = higher crime.

Robberies in Park Slope and Prospect heights are a fact of life. Day and night time. It's been happening here since I can remember. It's not like we're living in Dyker Heights or Gerritsen Beach.

i did see a bunch of cops talking to the women at happy cleaners about 5:00 yesterday. i feel bad for her shes in there all alone every day with no protection. shes very nice i get all my dry cleaning done there.
i wouldn't compare this incident to the shooting down the street. totally different circumstances. -

I do feel bad for the Happy Cleaners woman. She is so vulnerable. She only takes cash. She's always there alone. She's near a corner, so someone running away could go in several different directions almost immediately.

Just because I wrote about both incidents in the same post doesn't mean that I am comparing them.

To comment about the relationship between weather and crime...There tend to be more crimes involving shootings in the nicer weather and generally speaking there are probably more street robberies in nice weather but every year as we get closer to the holidays there is a spike in robberies. There tend to be more commercial robberies leading up to Christmas. There is also a rise in robberies around ATM's. The perps will scout out an ATM and wait for somebody to make a withdrawal and then rob them a block away. -

If that is the case, let's just lock ourselves up in our apartments until March. It'll be light out then and there are no expensive holidays! We can be like bears in our urban caves not because it is our natural desire to do so, but because we are too fearful to walk on any avenues during the holiday rush. Sooooooo scary, the occaisional robbery on Vanderbilt, the tragic shooting of a man over a very intense rent dispute between tenant and renter. Not random strangers. That really makes me want to bury my hands in my pockets and question my decision to live anywhere near the vicinity of this area?
C'mon! An actress was murdered last week in the West Village. Do you think anyone is going on and on about how bad it is around there because of a freak occurence? Doubt it.

Many people on this board ask about police activity in the area or ask what the police were doing on a certain block. Many people talk about calling Det. Ratton for info. I'm cutting out the middle man. You don't want the info, don't read my posts. It's just like violence on television; if you don't like the violence then change the channel. -

That makes sense for the robbery you reported. But the Indigo Blu shooting wasn't exactly random violence. I don't think people in the neighborhood have to worry about an epidemic of rogue auxiliary police officers on shooting sprees... or do they?

Although I guess in many ways, the Indigo Blu shooting was quite typical. The fact is that most gun violence is between people who know each other, and does not involve random armed criminals attacking strangers on the street. -
It could have been anybody walking into that bar to get some liquid lunch. It happened to be hired help but it could have been any one of us. Be aware of your surroundings, not only on the street but also when you enter a place of business.

Also, don't forget to be aware of buses crossing the street making wide turns, halloween candy laced with whatever shit they put into halloween candy, SUV's driving erratically. Keep your eyes open WIDE :shock: for all of these things, too. There's a motherfuckin' crime wave here!

Oh, c'mon! This wasn't a so-called "crime update." This is crazy overreaction! There is nothing we have to watch opur backs about on Vanderbilt Ave that is any different than most pasrt of the city. Thew original poster starts his/her topic with a sarcastic tone such as "Vanderbilt is great" and then goes on and on about how it is not and we should all be quivering like leaves hanging on to a branch. That is fucking lame. Yes, I agree, the heartfelt ideas qabout Indigo Blue are things that should be discussed. We've all had drinks in that place and the owner was a nice guy. But to go so far and tell us all to watch our backs is quite funny.
