Do you see money being exchanged? No money = no offense= nothing the police can do.

I suspect that shooting dice is a cultural norm in communities like this. It may not neccessarily be killing time between drug sales but just killing time period and hooking up with friends........or potential customers .

i'm pretty new to this area but i'm also pretty sure the cops would laugh at you for calling the them about some dice players. i get annoyed sometimes with my neighbors being loud outside but, unless i see an actual crime being committed, i'm certainly not gonna call the cops...

Dice game = Penal Law Code 240.35 loitering for the purpose of gambling. Call the police, dont accept crime as the norm. Thats what makes the neighborhood so screwed up in the first place. If you must gamble; Gamble inside your house. Police are not laughing at people who call them for dice games, but do find it rather disturbing a community that tolerates criminal behavior as the norm.

I agree with you on one level, but I also see the other side of the coin. For example, if you are used to hanging out on the stoop of a house because the house was empty and no one lived there so you weren't hassled I can understand that. But if the house is purchased and the owner moves in, I think he/she absolutely has the right to then expect that you would change your behavior and not hang out there.

I think the right thing to do is go outside and simply ask if the game can be moved. Come up with some excuse "My mom's is coming through and she's real religious and if she sees you out here gambling she's going to come over and start preaching to you and me. Can y'all move up the block?"

It may sound ridiculous but sometimes it works. I was on a conference call one night for work with these folks from Australia when a car pulled up with the bass booming. I couldn't go into another room since I needed to use my computer, so I put my phone on mute, ran outside and said I was on an oversees conference call and couldn't hear. The guy was like "No prob." End of story.

Sometimes you can let it go, sometimes you can't but you shouldn't expect to have to let it go and you should only call the cops if asking doesn't work.

The good old DisCon. FYI...The supreme court ruled that sub 3 is unconstitional. DisCon is a patrolman's catchall summons. Yes, it can be used to make dice players scatter but what happens when they live in the building? You're gonna to tell 3 guys to hit the bricks if they live there? That's just bad policing.

P.S. The vast majority of DisCon summons either are dismissed or the deft. gets an ACD. So, what's the point?

The pont is the guys get the message that playing dice and public loitering are no longer the norm around here. Jeez! Public loitering on Nostrand AVe has been the number 1, 2 and 3 complaints for as long as I can remember. Middle class folks who just want to shop don't want to deal with the mental strain of wondering what there dudes are up to. Are they just loitering, or are they muggers, drug dealers, addicts, etc. etc? Who needs the aggravation when there are places to shop where you don't have these hassles.
