quality of life
Right now as I am typing this post there are 6 men shooting dice next door to my house. Should I ignore it like of the rest of the neighbors or call the police? DO YOU REALLY HAVE TO BE TOLD HELLO ! THIS IS NOT THE RIGHT THING TO DO. This is the holiday weekend people are having guest over have a little consideration find something else to do.

Do you see money being exchanged? No money = no offense= nothing the police can do.
-
Call the police, often the dice guys are the same ones selling drugs and carrying guns. Dice playing kills time in between sales. just make sure you give a detailed description to the 911 operator, the more info you give the better for the responding officers.
-
I suspect that shooting dice is a cultural norm in communities like this. It may not neccessarily be killing time between drug sales but just killing time period and hooking up with friends........or potential customers
. -
Police can not frisk/search for narcotics based on a 911 call. Police can also not frisk/search for weapons based on an annonymous 911 call. You must give your name/number if you claim that the person has a gun and want them "tossed". If they don't have a gun, you can be (I'm not saying that you will be) arrested.
-
Whoa folks. Perhaps it's just a few guys shooting dice, for Christ's sake. Loosen up...
-
Right on Greenwood, it too is a holiday for all people and they just simply might celebrate it differently. Throwing dice might be the alternative to a college football game, etc.

We used to tip cows to celebrate the 4th of July

please kill yourself.

Me or the cow?

or the original poster...if so...temper, temper

relax, they're just hangin out playin Cee-lo. Since when is that a crime? If it bothers you so much, go out, introduce yourself, and say..Hey, I'm having some guests over, etc, etc.
It works for me, but then again I usually know the guys.
You get more bees with honey, babe.
Remember you moved here, they were here when you came. -

Contact the precinct's Special Ops Lt. and let them know that this is going on. If you are witnessing this you can call the police and they will drive by and break up the game. They can be arrested for having dice games. Its against the law. Are they going to stay in jail probably not but if they get arrested enough times they will have a longer sentence. -
Call the police if your pipes are leaking! Call the police if there is a bird shitting from a tree! Call the police! Call the police! Call! Call! Call! Call! Call! Call! Call! Call! Call! Call!
-
talk about being rude. Anonymous moves into a building and expects everyone else to change..
Like I'm gonna go to her hous and tell her how to do her stuff? And if she doesn't I'll find a crime in it and call the cops. Maybe they'll shoot 50 times. -
i'm pretty new to this area but i'm also pretty sure the cops would laugh at you for calling the them about some dice players. i get annoyed sometimes with my neighbors being loud outside but, unless i see an actual crime being committed, i'm certainly not gonna call the cops...

Dude, thats it. I am totally calling the cops the next time I see those scary white boys in my office talking about football pools. Thats against the law and all, you know?
And people wonder why the gentrifiers aren't being welcomed with open arms. Grow up and save the police calls for shootings and muggings. -
Couldn't agree with you more Jayce.
-
LeeHo, as a rare turn of events we're absolutely on the same side of this one. Who gives a crap if some guys are playing dice, for god's sakes? Unless they were actually shooting the dice, b/c that would be dangerous and weird.
-
Ok, cause Lt. G. is going to be sitting by the phone waiting for somebody to call about somebody throwing dice.
-
ParadeRest, make all the calls you like my man and plant that gun on them, like you so cleverly mentioned above. That'll really help things! Maybe an overzealous cop will really think he had one because he "heard it" from somewhere and shoot the dice thrower, too. That'll make things so much better.

Dice game = Penal Law Code 240.35 loitering for the purpose of gambling. Call the police, dont accept crime as the norm. Thats what makes the neighborhood so screwed up in the first place. If you must gamble; Gamble inside your house. Police are not laughing at people who call them for dice games, but do find it rather disturbing a community that tolerates criminal behavior as the norm.

Well, and 240.20 of the same code says that swearing in public is criminal behavior too. Oh wait... so is grunting. Just like that dude at the gym. King, you shoulda called the police there too. So you better put the Lt. on speed dial... cause I have been seeing a lot of violations.
"Section 240.20 Disorderly conduct
A person is guilty of disorderly conduct when, with intent to cause public inconvenience, annoyance or alarm, or recklessly creating a risk thereof:
1. He engages in fighting or in violent, tumultuous or threatening behavior; or
2. He makes unreasonable noise; or
3. In a public place, he uses abusive or obscene language, or makes an obscene gesture; or
4. Without lawful authority, he disturbs any lawful assembly or meeting of persons; or
5. He obstructs vehicular or pedestrian traffic; or
6. He congregates with other persons in a public place and refuses to comply with a lawful order of the police to disperse; or
7. He creates a hazardous or physically offensive condition by any act which serves no legitimate purpose.
Disorderly conduct is a violation. " -
omg,
YOU CANT COME TO WHERE SOMEONE ALREADY LIVES AND CHANGE THEIR BEHAVIOUR. HELLOOOO??? Are they supposed to change their life 'cause now the big and almight "anonymous" has moved to the block and she doesn't like people hangin out?
Unless you are being attacked, physically, LET IT GO!
If it bothers you so goddamn much, MOVE! -
I didn't read anything in the OP that there was money being exchanged - isn't that what gambling is? For as long as I can remember shooting dice, playing dominoes, and playing boche ball has always been a pastime in Brooklyn.

I agree with you on one level, but I also see the other side of the coin. For example, if you are used to hanging out on the stoop of a house because the house was empty and no one lived there so you weren't hassled I can understand that. But if the house is purchased and the owner moves in, I think he/she absolutely has the right to then expect that you would change your behavior and not hang out there.

I think the right thing to do is go outside and simply ask if the game can be moved. Come up with some excuse "My mom's is coming through and she's real religious and if she sees you out here gambling she's going to come over and start preaching to you and me. Can y'all move up the block?"
It may sound ridiculous but sometimes it works. I was on a conference call one night for work with these folks from Australia when a car pulled up with the bass booming. I couldn't go into another room since I needed to use my computer, so I put my phone on mute, ran outside and said I was on an oversees conference call and couldn't hear. The guy was like "No prob." End of story.
Sometimes you can let it go, sometimes you can't but you shouldn't expect to have to let it go and you should only call the cops if asking doesn't work. -

The good old DisCon. FYI...The supreme court ruled that sub 3 is unconstitional. DisCon is a patrolman's catchall summons. Yes, it can be used to make dice players scatter but what happens when they live in the building? You're gonna to tell 3 guys to hit the bricks if they live there? That's just bad policing.
P.S. The vast majority of DisCon summons either are dismissed or the deft. gets an ACD. So, what's the point? -

The pont is the guys get the message that playing dice and public loitering are no longer the norm around here. Jeez! Public loitering on Nostrand AVe has been the number 1, 2 and 3 complaints for as long as I can remember. Middle class folks who just want to shop don't want to deal with the mental strain of wondering what there dudes are up to. Are they just loitering, or are they muggers, drug dealers, addicts, etc. etc? Who needs the aggravation when there are places to shop where you don't have these hassles.
Get on the program, Paraderest. -
Did this occur on Nostrand Avenue? For some reason I wasn't thinking it was occuring on Nostrand. Maybe I was wrong.
Greg, I hope that the cops come give you a summons the next time you have company over and you're sitting on the stoop with a few friends and you refuse to disperse. Maybe you'll be up on the roof of an apt building having a few beers when the cops show up and then you'll get atleast two tickets, one for the beer and one for trespassing. -

I think you are the one that needs to get on a program, Greg. The guys are sitting on a porch that is not the original posters house, playing a game. There was no mention of money being exchanged. JUST SOME PEOPLE PLAYING A GAME.
good god what is the matter with people around here that people keepng to themselves deserves some next-door neighbor getting all high and mighty in the 12 seconds he has moved in to the neighborhood and calling the police for a GAME!!! Are they harassing people? No. Are they calling out to people? No. They are sticking to themselves and playing a game.
I cannot believe the elitist bullshit going on here. You know what... call the cops on me too. I sit on my porch sometimes and drink a beer. Oh wait... you won't because I'm white. And I will put money (better start dialing) on the fact that this is what it comes down to... if they were 6 white guys with some dice this would be a non-issue. Time to call a spade a spade. Deal with it. -
I don't think this is about race. We've all made it about race, because that tends to happen a lot around here. If you reread the original post the person had a problem with the fact that they were playing dice next door on a holiday. The poster left out a lot of information like (1) is the the first time this has happened, (2) were the folks making noise, or drinking or otherwise being disruptive, (3) is this an everyday event or something that's never happened before, (4) are these folks that live next door or strangers, (5) what race is the person posting and (6) are they new to the neighborhood. It could just as easily be that it wasn't the craps game that annoyed them, it was the craps game on a holiday that annoyed them. I don't know.
Everyone here has sort of been filling in the answers to those questions, reading between the lines, making assumptions and then responding. But the answer to one or all of those questions may change how any of us view this post. The prisim of race distorts many of the discussions we have here, but not everything is about race. Sometimes its class and sometimes its ethnicity and sometimes it just posters having a bad day and reading something or posting something that sets folks off.
Besides, if it is about race, I'd like people to feel comfortable enough to say that, and not worry about getting flamed. Far too many of us keep our bullshit under wraps.
Howdy, Stranger!
