I never recommended that anybody lie about somebody having a gun. My point was that police can not frisk/search solely based on an annonymous 911 call. You really need to learn to not read into things.
  • C'mon ParadeRest, that is all anyone does on this board.

Anyway, I think that your previous posting could easily be construed as saying this is okay if you want to have the cops really fuck with a guy if you don't like what they are doing.

You wrote: You must give your name/number if you claim that the person has a gun and want them "tossed". If they don't have a gun, you can be (I'm not saying that you will be) arrested.

And that reads kind of like advice, yeah?
  • No, actually it doesn't. It was information for people who falsely claim that somebody commited a crime. Falsely reporting a crime is itself a crime. You need to stop reading between the lines.
  • Yet, at the point of time you posted this information, no one was even considering calling in a complaint for a false crime. You planted that seed and it didn't exist beforehand.

    No.
  • OK, Alex, then you tell me what it sounds like. You explain the point of mentioning that shit to me.

Sounds like useful information to me, smurf.

What it reads, to me - "If someone has a gun, and you want them patted down, you must leave your name/number. If you were wrong about the gun, there's a slim chance that you could be arrested."

Guns, guns guns! This country is nuts about guns! Would the Sean Bell mess have happened with the cops weren't paranoid about being shot at? If every third thug didn't have a gun, would the cops have been that paranoid/fearful?

Clearly getting guns off the streets, as Bloomberg is trying to do, is the beginning of the solution to a lot of BS that's happening in the NYC.
  • Original poster, I definitely agree with you. Whether it be a friendly, no-money involved dice game, I would not want it in front of where I live. Regardless, if I'm a renter or an owner. It is unbelievable to me how many posters don't see anything wrong with it and go as far as saying that perhaps this is how some celebrate the holidays. Shame on you. With those attitudes, our neighborhoods will never be free of violence. C'mon, if you were born & raised in Brooklyn, you know that at least 5 of out 10 times these dice games will lead to arguements, fighting and shootouts. Let's stop burying our heads in the sand people.

The sand people definitely wouldn't appreciate that at all!

    Guns don't cause violence.

People, guns, and violence, and dice, are all caused by a collapsing of the {people|gun|violence|dice} wavefunction upon observation under classical assumptions. Dice players: take note.
  • I'm still at a loss with how the idea of patting them down for a gun even came into this conversation. There were no guns/shots/violence even mentioned in OP's post, or in any others after that until ParadeRest brought it up. Why did it even come up? To move from dice games on Thanksgiving to packing heat is making much stronger assumptions than the supposed lines I have crossed.
  • King without a crown wrote: Call the police, often the dice guys are the same ones selling drugs and carrying guns. Dice playing kills time in between sales. just make sure you give a detailed description to the 911 operator, the more info you give the better for the responding officers.
The above quote is what inspired me to post what I did.

I still can't figure out though where you got the idea to plant a gun on somebody. You really are a sensionalist; I thought that was just a joke.

Im sorry faithful I usually am on the same page as you but not this time - I guess we need to ban hopscotch, skelsies, etc. They are all friendly games where no money is exchanged. My father and uncles all played dominoes outside my house and never, never has there ever been any violence. Same for the older guys that shot dice on the corner. Most of the time they looked out for us and never were there any b.s. The only time I have heard of a terrible outcome was recently when some guys were playing cards on Atlantic and a car went out of control and hit them. Im more worried about the police in this area than I am of the guys shooting dice.
  • My 2 cents - I have yet to see dice throwin' on my block without the participants holding a fistful of money.
  • OK, I can see that gambling may coincide with delinquency, and that the guys shooting dice on the corner might be more likely to be gangsters than, say, the guys in the library. But the dice isn't what makes them gangsters. Take the dice away and they'll still argue, loiter, fight, and be a nuisance. If there were 10 thugs outside your house every day just hanging out, would that be anymore comforting than if they were gambling? Essentially, gambling amongst friends is no different than playing any other game, be it dominoes or basketball. I've heard of kids getting shot over a hoops game--should basketball be outlawed too? We shouldn't be focusing on the dice when that's really not the problem.
  • Anyone for a game of monopoly? :)

Howabout Russian Roulette? Now there's a game of chance that could help clean up the streets in the long run.
  • escap wrote: If there were 10 thugs outside your house every day just hanging out, would that be anymore comforting than if they were gambling?
    1) They'd be less likely to hang out without the pleasant diversion of gambling. 2) Didn't anyone ever tell you not to mess with a man's car, woman or money? It's a lot easier to get in to a dispute about money when it's changing hands every 60 seconds... or, more likely, when it should be changing hands, but it doesn't...
  • WhyFi wrote: My 2 cents - I have yet to see dice throwin' on my block without the participants holding a fistful of money.
Yes, but more importantly, is your 2 cents usually enough to buy you in?
  • Obviously it is not, cuz he'd lose his 2 cents and his wad of cash in a NY minute.

    Sorry, WhyFi, but you would.

I'm down with the mental spar, but can tell that you'd suck on the street level.

    On a different note:

    Monopoly sounds great!

    Let's do it!

Sat. PM to make a real date. Let's meet, drink beer, watch TV and bitch about shit.
  • LeeHo wrote: I'm down with the mental spar, but can tell that you'd suck on the street level.
As with many other subjects, you don't know what you're talking about. Sorry, but you don't.
  • No we shouldn't ban hopscotch, skelly because I've never heard no one being hurt by the above childhood staples. I think we're comparing apples to oranges. I have small children and I would teach them how to play hopscotch, skelly and domino in a nano second, but I would not ever put a dice in their hand and show them how to play dice in the street. As far as my comment about not burying our heads in the sand, it was never meant as an ethnic issue, it is just a common expression -- relax!!!

I think that was a geek Star Wars reference, not a middle east ethnic reference.

Not that Carnivore is a geek or anything...

I think I'm making it worse...

Well I did say the long run. You're right, it'd get icky, particularly over summer. But let's face it: those dice players aren't the type to hose down after their dirty games as it is.

wasn't that a joke based on punctuation?

Only if you use an automatic. No revolvers for this round.
