Beautiful kitty for adoption!/help raise money for vet bills

edited November -1 in Brooklyn Pets
I took in a cat today that was thrown out on the street because her owner didn't want her anymore. I already have 4 cats so I can't keep her. She appears to be under a year old, a Bengal mix, and is a total sweetheart. I have pictures of her on flickr and I have a couple videos of me petting her that I can email if anyone's interested. PM me for more info, thanks!

  • Cute cat! Thanks so much for taking her in temporarily. You shouldn't have any trouble finding her a good home. She looks like a sweetie.
  • Thanks! I hope so, since I found her brother (I think) today and took him in too. Keeping my fingers crossed! If you want to see him, I added pics to Honey's page. :)
  • That is one gorgeous kitty! I hope she finds a good home.
You're a wonderful person for taking her and her brother in.

    Many blessings!
  • Thanks! I'm trying to raise money to get them their shots and get them fixed. I put up donation tins at my job and raised $68! Hopefully, that will help get them adopted. I don't have a lot of money, I can just support myself and my animals. I just don't understand how someone could toss these cats out on the street, they are so sweet!

I will match any donations that anyone here makes towards these cats' medical care, up to the total amount of the bills (I'll just ask you to show me the receipts).

Anyone who wants to take me up on this, please just post here.
  • Thank you so much! I'm going to call my vet tomorrow to see if there's a way to set up an account for the kitties that people could donate to. That way anyone who donates would know that it's going directly to the care of the kitties. My vets are Drs. Maddon and Parker on 5th Ave in Park Slope, does anyone know if they do anything like that? Thanks again Carnivore! :)
  • Caeopele - do you know about Muffin Certificates? That will save you some money
  • I actually used the Friends of Animals spay/neuter certificate for my cats and dogs. I think it was $50-60 for the cats and my vet accepts it. So, I figured I would do that again. UPDATE: I was in the middle of writing this when a couple who saw the girl on petfinder came over to look at her. They're taking her! The woman is forwarding an email from slope street cats, they checked them out and made sure they were good with cats. I also have a guy coming over tonight to look at the boy, wish me luck! Thanks everyone for being so helpful and caring, I really appreciate it. I know the kitties do too since they probably thought they weren't loved because they were tossed out like so much garbage. It's so nice to know there are wonderful people out there. I'll keep you guys updated, thanks again! :)
  • Yay, Kitties! Yay, Caseopele!
  • Well, the guy who was supposed to come look at the boy changed his mind. So, I'm still going to call my vet tomorrow and find out what shots he would need and if they can set something up for donations. I still feel pretty good though, the couple that's taking the girl seem really nice. I'm optimistic that I'll find a good home for the boy. Thanks everyone!
  • Ok, I set everything up at my vet's office. If you'd like to donate then PM me and I'll give you my name (can't have my secret identity revealed to everyone!) The girl is being picked up today, she's going to a great home. The boy is still up for adoption, he is such a sweet boy. A little timid, but he warms up after awhile. He's not bothered at all by other cats or dogs, but I could see him getting bullied by more dominant animals. The exam is $57, the shots (fvrcp) are about $60 (I think these are the right prices, they may be off by a dollar or too.) If I can't find a home for him soon I'd like to be able to let him out of the bathroom. But I'd have to get him tested for feline leukemia and feline aids, which is about $70. I would just have to be sure that he doesn't have anything that could be transmitted to my cats. I already have enough to get him fixed from the donations I got from customers at my job. Well, here's a picture of the sweet boy. Thanks so much everyone!

  • I'm making this a global announcement for a few days to give this more exposure.

My offer to match any and all donations stands.
  • Such a strange post to see right above "Bodega kitty stolen!"

    EDIT: On the PH forum.
  • Here's a tip: Through the end of January (and possibly beyond), NY Animal Care & Control is offering the following VERY low-cost vet services:

Spay/neuter: $25 for cats, $35 for dogs; for medicaid recipients $10 for cats and $20 for dogs.

Vaccinations for $10, flea tick treatment $7, felv fiv test $10.

You can call them to make an appointment or for more info at 212 788 4000.

The address of the Brooklyn shelter is:
    2336 linden blvd
    brooklyn, ny 11208

    See also www.nycacc.org.

    good luck!
  • why is the brooklyn shelter so out of the way? they really harm animals by putting it in an area less people cross. one day i was driving to the airport and we drove by it and i was shocked.

the other thing is, do you think the couple might take the boy too? i hate when cats are split up. :(

i feel low on funds but to help out with the matching thing, i could donate a small amount. where do we send?

    cat.
  • I was hoping a bunch of people would commit $5-10 bucks here, and I'd kick in the rest. PM the OP for how to get the money to him/her.
  • okay thanks! will do.
  • Thanks so much everybody! I guess everyone who donates should let Carnivore know how much they donated. I'm sorry I'm not posting my name here. I don't care if you guys know my name, I just don't want trolls or weirdos coming across it. The vet is Park Slope Veterinary Care at 413 5th Avenue between 7th and 8th streets, their number is 718-788-0500.

And thanks for the suggestion to go to the ACC, I just don't know how I'd get out there. The boy is pretty heavy and I wouldn't want to subject him to a long trip after he gets neutered. Plus, I've used my vets ever since they opened, they have been absolutely amazing to all my cats and dogs. When my cat Caseopia had to have her leg amputated they didn't charge me for labor just costs. It was an emergency and it had to be done right away. They did it without worrying about how I was going to pay for it. I'm still going to put out a donation tin at my job and I posted about the boy on craigslist. If we can't raise enough then I'll eat PB&J sandwiches until I make up the rest.

I hope he finds a good home soon though, he's beginning to grow on me and my oldest cat would have my head if I kept him (so would my parents.) She's already giving me dirty looks everytime I go into the bathroom, she knows what I'm hiding in there and she does not approve. [-(
  • We need to get our new (still unnamed) kitty spayed. I love Hope, but they quoted $400-$600! The site mentioned above however, sounds almost too cheap. $25? What's their deal?
  • I want to invite everyone who donates to visit my job for a sweet discount on wine. It's Shawn's on 7th Avenue between Carroll & Garfield. I'm there evenings except for Tuesday and Thursday. I have long purple/blue hair so you can't miss me. It's all I can do to thank you guys for being so wonderful! :)

It's a not-for-profit organization funded by the city and donors. This particular special is something they got grant money for, I believe, which is why it's only for a limited time.

Don't you have a pit mix, too?! For some reason, I remember talking about that with someone fitting the above description, once when I was in line, buying a RM champagne... :D

If you miss out on the deal that was mentioned above, google Muffins Certificate and follow the procedure to get a discounted spaying/neutering at a local vet who honors the discount (make sure you follow the procedures (buy the certificate first, then make the appt. and also be sure to ask/notify them when making an appt. that you are using a Muffin Cert)).

=D> for you (and Carnivore, and others who donate).

<---unemployed and at full kitty capacity, or I'd be more helpful. That said, I'm sure I can dig up a few bucks. If I am near the store, I'll stop by and fork some over.
  • Whyfi, yup I'm the one with the muzzled pit. She's been dying to get into the bathroom ever since I took the kitties in. She loves them and wants to play with them, of course she doesn't understand that she's not a kitty.

Flexichick, even if you can't spare anything please stop by the store. Everyone here has been so wonderful, just the emotional support of these 2 cuties has been amazing.

UPDATE: I just got an email from the girl's new mom. She says she's adjusting nicely, hanging out in the bathroom and flopping over on her back for belly rubs. They're taking her to the vet for shots and spaying. They seem like really great people and I'm sure she'll be happy there. Now, a gratuitous pic of my naughty girl! Thanks again everybody!

    Ripley
  • Gorgeous doggie!

Glad to hear kitty girl is adjusting. Showing the belly for a rub is a HUGE sign of trust and comfort, as you probably already know.

Next time I'm in that area, I'll stop in and say hi
  • Caseopele, thank you so much for taking the kitties in, and working so hard to get them adopted! I know how difficult it is, but you're doing the right thing.
I agree with Cat. I wish the couple who took the girl would consider taking the boy, too. Did you ask?
I also agree with Flexichick that a Muffin's certificate can really help (BigGuy - check it out at http://www.muffins.org/spay.htm ), but I don't see Park Slope Veterinary Care on the list and they accept your Friends of Animals certificates so that's only a bit more.
I will donate $25. The only problem is that I live in Bed Stuy... My sister or I might be able to come by your shop tomorrow after work. I'll PM you.
Carnivore - that's so sweet of you to offer to match donations. Thank you!
  • The couple that adopted the girl is considering taking the boy too if no one else takes him. I think the boy is too mellow to be with her though. She is kind of a prima donna (in a good way) and loves attention. When I would pet them both she would sort of push him out of the way. He is so sweet that he would just walk away.

I'm going to use the Muffins certificate since it's cheaper and my vet doesn't take the Friends of Animals certificate anymore. I'm taking him to my vet tomorrow for his shots and the tests so I can let him out of the bathroom. He's really lonely in there. My old vet on Prospect Park West takes the Muffins certificate so I'll bring him there.

Ripley always reminded me of Puff the magic dragon, with her little ears and big head. Sometimes I half expect smoke to come out of her nose!
  • Have you determined how to set up the fund yet? I would be happy to donate $25 as well if you can streamline the process and make sure it goes to the new kitty.
