Subject: What's missing?
Solve for X:"My retail/shopping/services options in PH would be measurably improved if only we had X"
What types of stores are missing? What type of store would you patronize if only it were on Vanderbilt, Underhill, or Washington?
I know we've gone over the lack of retail options a few times over the last 2 years, but I'm thinking of actually doing something about it.

Carnivore's answer: butcher shop
-
Any place with decent meat/fish/produce would be mroe than welcome, especially if the prices were reasonable, unlike, say, Union Market.
-
a good bagel spot
im tired of walking to bergen bagells every sunday morning.
its like 2 avenues and 3 blocks for me, pretty much a 25 min round trip
if they could put one on washington near gen i would be in heaven -
A good diner with the following qualities: good cheeseburger and fries, decent prices, reliable delivery, and open late.
-
24 hour/open late diner absolutely!
and a cheap-o bagel/coffee joint
i second those.
also, a decent pharmacy (and big!) with lots of household items in stock, etc.
excellent produce
cabaret/dinner/entertainment venue
a movie theatre! -
Bagel shop!! real bagel shop!
-
seems to be a large number of vacant store fronts on washington upwards of parkplace... perhaps in that general region? any idea of how much a storefront might go for on washington?>
-
hair salon
eyeglass store
liquor store
storefront church
oh, wait... -

But that is my answer.

Or just any kind of proper bakery (as opposed to a cake shop). Our options for fresh bread and savory pastry products are next to none. -
Im torn between the butcher shop or to have all those other suggestions in one store, similar to Mangia in the City. I love that I can grab some really great baked goods, a nice cold and hot selection of food and salad bar, panninis and wraps, and I would love to have a place that had some fresh made soup each day.

There seems to be a paucity of cell phone stores in the immediate vicinity.
-
Another vote for a real old-fashioned butcher counter.
-
Bagel shop. Also, a medium-quality Italian. Better than Ginos, cheaper than Amorina.
-
You know, I don't get off work until 7 most days, and that's just too late to pck up a pail of home heating oil for the evening.
So I vote for a 24-hour heating oil place. -
Starbucks
-
Starbuck's opening on Eastern Parkway and Franklin in a couple of months...patience, grasshopper.
As for my vote, I'm actually interested in seeing a REALLY good market: produce, meat, veggies, CHEESE (hi, Alfairnadia!), breads....you know, fat kid/culinary food.
Or a good burger joint/bar. Like Soda, only cooler. -
A NICE 24-hour bodega. With produce and fancy dark chocolate candy bars and flowers.
And I'd like to second Brooklynleather's vote for a larger pharmacy -- I get sick of having to schlep to Target for a decent selection of household cleaning items, cosmetics, etc. -
bakery, with bagels and good bread.
good pizza delivery. -
A newsstand, a kosher style deli and a seafood/butcher shop, within a block of Park Place on Vanderbilt.
-
Sounds like most of you really just want to live in Murray Hill.
-
Actually, all of this was here in Prospect Heights before the Murray Hill people moved here.
-
Whole Foods or Trader Joes!!
-
Uncle Luigi's Ices.......right on Vanderbilt. Wouldn't that be awesome? No more trekking down to Union Street and 6th Avenue after dinner with the kidees on warm evenings. Maybe could be a take-out Soup and Sandwhich type place in the cold months, nad Uncle Luigi's in the warm? They franchise, so go for it!

where is luigis?
and where is le gamin? -

I actually don't feel bad about that (The starbucks on franklin, that is).

I heard a totally suspicious sounding rumor that a whole foods will be opening up on washington in the first floor of one of those buildings but it is entirely unsubstantiated. -

There was a rumor that a gourmet grocer was going to open on the first level of the washington although it may have been just that they were trying to get a gourmet grocer. Not sure if the rumor was that any business had actually considered it. Either way, I don't think whole foods would go into a space that small (from their website, avg store size is 32,000 ft). However, something along the lines of a Union Market would be great.
Howdy, Stranger!
