With restaurants in this town, you vote with your feet and I'll keep walking to the slope until people get their acts together in my neighborhood ( the always closed 'Tom's' and the always slow 'Islands' will not get my money).
as far as cheryl's. i've been several times with nothing but friendly responses. perhaps the only people compelled to spend their time writing posts are those with nothing else to do...cept bitch. opening a successful business, all around, does not happen the moment you open your door. christ.
crawling back into my hole where it's safe. -

Oooh, SevenOneEighty -- you've been gentriconfronted!
Seriously, though, I love Tom's and The Islands, but I don't patronize either very often for the very reasons SevenOneEighty mentioned. I'm rarely around the neighborhood during the hours Tom's is open, and I even more rarely have the time to wait for the food at The Islands. That's not saying they're bad places, but I do think it's reasonable that some folks might not go to either very often for those reasons.busterbunny wrote: perhaps the only people compelled to spend their time writing posts are those with nothing else to do...cept bitch. opening a successful business, all around, does not happen the moment you open your door. christ.
Busterbunny, you've been a member here for six months and only posted 10 times in that entire period -- I seriously doubt you've read the board enough to get much of a feel for the people you're so quick to slam. Sweet Tea and Jayce, the posters who wrote about bad experiences at Cheryl's, often have positive things to say about the neighborhood and the businesses in it. -
Darn,
So I have been banisihed to the Slope for better food and service!
hehe! Thanks for the advice.
Like I said - they wont get MY money - they can have yours though.
-
15 bucks for a veggie stew? It's Underhill avenue for the love of god. Ridiculous.

The future belongs to those who see the potential in life before it becomes reality:

Someone has to feed these new folks in PH. Tom's won't be open.
She may know exactly what she is doing....... -
I think they'll just go to Hood Hing.

Thanks, apollonia.
And busterbunny, I said I'd go back. There wasn't any bitching involved. I stated what happened, mentioned that I thought they handled the situation as best as they could, but noted that it was not the best experience and I hoped they ironed it out. Speaking of local businesses... there is a glasses shop over on Washington... just in case.

so - I've had 2 meals, both "take out" and some treats, and so far, they get a 6.5/10 in my book.
meal #1 - carrot curry soup, basic salad, portabello mushroom burger. the soup was amazing - might have been the best carrot soup I've ever had. I'm pretty sure they said it was vegan, which would be even more amazing - it was quite creamy tasting, with just enough spice to warm me up. the salad was average, and the burger was, well, skimpy. the bread-to-stuff ratio was off - way, way too much bread, the mushroom was thin, and the cheese (fresh mozzerella) was gloppy - it didn't like being melted. fries were good, but it's hard to mess up fries. Dessert was 1/2 an oatmeal cookie - very, very tender and delicious.
meal #2 - a "Bruce" sandwich (turkey, tomato, lettuce, chipolte mayo) and a CC cookie. the sandwich suffered from the same fate as the burger - *way* too much bread, and a filling so skimpy so as to make me peer into it to verify that it indeed had all of the ingredients. i was looking to be wowed, and it was, at best, an "eh." the CC cookie was, like the oatmeal, amazing. and i'm picky about my cookies.
I really, really want to like it there - everyone was polite when i ordered/picked up, so no complaints there. but, for the $, I want more - at the least I want balanced, interesting flavors, not skimpy ingredients and tasteless bread. it's too expensive to be less than delicious, "On Prospect Park" or not. -
we finally tried cheryl's this evening and came away impressed with the food, service and atmosphere, although it wasn't cheap. my daughter and i, both veggies, had the vegetable tagine couscous. yes, isa, $15 would buy a month of that in algeria, but in this neighborhood, it's not too bad, more expensive than tom's, less than aliseo's, and somewhere in between those two in terms of quality. it was delicious, a good assortment of very fresh-tasting vegetables, well-seasoned, with a sprig of fresh cilantro on top, and plenty of it. we didn't order appetizers and it was plenty. the glass of rioja i had with it for $7 was excellent--full-bodied, complex--more than held its own with the couscous. mrs. joe had the seared pork chop, accompanied by sides of spinach and roast potatoes, all delicious, good comfort food, and the spinach perfectly tender and not overcooked.
we were pretty full but managed to share a bread pudding, which was phenomonal: hot brioche bread pudding with chocolate chips and vanilla ice cream and cream sauce. probably the best bread pudding i've had since a trip to commander's palace in new orleans years ago.
the room was warm and cozy--there was a family celebrating a child's birthday at one table; at another two men and a woman were discussing the tao. our waiter was friendly and knowledgeable. interesting, but not overbearing, tunes on the sound system--at one point it was the zombies, at another some acoustic african.
the bill for the three of us, including 3 glasses of wine (i should mention the shiraz mrs. joe ordered wasn't the same caliber as the rioja), was $80-something; our total was $95 including tip. not an amount i'm willing to blow every day, but we'll definitely be back.
for the record, there were no dogs, either with customers or on the menu. -
Subject: Dogs and cleanliness
Just to pipe in... I find dogs to be more hygenic than humans. At least they don't pop their zits while their waiting for their food. A study was done about how many people wash their hands after going to the bathroom, and you don't even want to know. The human mouth has more bacteria than a dogs mouth. Not only that, dogs and humans don't share diseases. I'm not going to catch a cold or the flu or an std from a dog. Grant it they like to lick themselves but think about where your nasty hands and mouths have been.
People can be disgusting. -
I think Cheryl's Global Soul has gotten their shit together. Or anyway, there wasn't any angry white man messing things up as described above - they were super charming. Brunch is solid, I want dinner.
They now have wifi, which I don't see as an advantage.
This place has major potential.
p.s. the coffee is just okay. -
I went over there this weekend for a coffee and a muffin (which I mentioned in another thread). The people behind the counter were incredibly warm and friendly and that, along with their menu, makes me want to go back and do a sit down meal, possibly brunch.
-
Had dinner there last night. I loved the music. The staff were friendly. Cheryl was cool. Sent us over a complimentary rum punch. Very tasty. (I don't normally like a rum punch -- too sweet. Not true Cheryl's.) The husband had Creole BBQ shrimp and I had Bulgogi marinated rib-eye. Both were delicious. Great flavors. My steak came with frites which were "ehh". But, I'm not a fan of frites. I prefer my fries a little larger. I had the house rioja. I didn't love it, but I didn't hate it either. We also tried the shiraz. It was average. I think I'd just stick with rum punch or beer next time. So, we were happy and will go back.
PS -- I told them about this thread so maybe they'll get some of the hints above. -
Subject: The food and coffee are great, the service warm
We live on Eastern Parkway, and our son goes to the same school as Cheryl's son. We've had a party catered by Cheryl's, eaten sunday brunch and dinner there, had take out, and morning coffee. We have always found the food delicious and the recipes creative. The service has always been warm. Sometimes it gets crowded, then the service slows down a bit, but I think that is to be expected. Otherwise, it is a great place, very kid friendly, but not a playroom.

Do they have table service now? It's not clear from the website. Last time I went it was counter service only and it just wasn't what my friend and I were looking for at the time.

you're right -- it should distress you. It's too much of a scene. I haven't even been for a few years! But sooooo tasty, those artful breakfast cocktails.
Back to Cheryl. Yeah Cheryl! Anybody try the bulgogi*?
*dinner, not brunch -
