Heights Coffee

So I am the dummy who posted about the Heights as a guest. But the point is- I am a real Prospect Heights resident who enjoys the Heights very much, and so do my friends.
And I actually think that Starbucks is recreating the feel of places like the Heights and Gorilla. -
Welcome, Will! Starbucks feels similar to a MacDonalds to me. They're all the same and creep me out. The counter help doesn't give a damn. Gorilla feels personal, individual and comfy. The carrot cake is a treat. The beans are lovingly roasted right there. Listen, if you're happy at Heights coffee, enjoy!

You can already get that at Lorena's across Flatbush. Why bother opening another coffee shop right across the street and serve the same dreck? Some people wil drink anything, and I guess that's what they're counting on.. You'll still find me at Gorilla.
agreed

Regarding Gorilla, the Flying Saucer Cafe on Atlantic Avenue between Nevins and 3rd Avenue has reopened under new management--actually the original owners from way back when--and they are serving Gorilla coffee as well. A tip for those in Boerum Hill who don't want to make the trek out to 5th Avenue in the Slope. -
Totally agree about Starbucks. What I meant was, that they are trying to recreate the experience of places like The Heights, in a mass market over priced way. With awful coffee.

Incestial isn't a word. The adjective for when you fucked your Mom is incestuous. The adjective for when we all fucked her is just GROSS. She is a total skank, by the way.
shit. I do not remember fucking guest's mom AT ALL - I think I was wasted. -

That is hilarious. I just searched out this thread again when I got home, and I was just finished re-reading it when you posted this!
We should also reprise the thread where pensodyssey gave A.G. the smackdown about the "skin flute" thing! -

my question is: how is it that you have lived here 3 MONTHS and not done "any shopping in the area"? That is RIDICULOUS. And you're posting in a community devoted to the community you have avoided for 3 months? damn, man. that's cold, ice cold.
I have read the Heights thread and saw nothing unusual about the comments, except carnivore who seemed to have a definite bias.
the only reason i like the Heights is that, when I first moved here, they were close, quiet, empty, had free internet, and didn't bother me. That was fabulous. Now, I brew my coffee at home. When i went in a little while ago, it was ridiculously crowded and full of working people with laptops and I was just like, well, have it your way.
It's not a place (now) that I would spend any time at (or, for that matter, spend too much for coffee at). -
i could have sworn i chimed in on this thread before....anyways.....
1) Heights Coffee is average, at best. I became somewhat interested again when I saw they were serving Blue Sky Bakery muffins but, then, last time I was there, those were definitely NOT Blue Sky muffins. nothing beats getting your Blue Sky Bakery muffin warm, though, and Heights would never be able to recreate that.
2) Flying Saucer Cafe rules, although the mocha I had last week there was nowhere near as good as the black & white mocha I had a year ago that left me fantazing about it so much you could swear Lindsay Lohan served it to me.
3) Gorilla Coffee is best goddamn coffee in this city, along with the Mud truck.
4) has anyone truly been caught shilling for a place on this board? -

i don't shop in PH either. what is there to shop for here? i mean, i really don't buy anything besides food and i only shop at the co-op, so.. but in terms of anything else non-co-op related, washington ave. does not suit my needs and the boutiques on vanderbilt are too pricey.

oh, wait.. PH stoop sales, i guess sometimes i do shop PH..
in terms of heights coffee, if they did not charge extra for soy milk, i know WAY more people who would stop in instead of passing by on the way to coffee. -
Anyone good with webapps? I want to create some sort of map that has all of our local stores/cafes etc pinpointed...
-
Hey dan.h, have you checked out this site? http://www.smalltownbrooklyn.com
They do what you're talking about but only go as far as flatbush.
Not sure what your ambitions are around this but if you put together a listing of all the shops in the area they might be interested in expanding their site. I get the impression that they would like to do more but don't have the time to keep too large an area current.
Of course there is an opportunity to do something from scratch using the latest and greatest in web technologies but that's going to be a bit more work. -

between the bars and the liquor/wine stores, I'd say I do my part in supporting the PH economy. I also get almost every baby shower gift ever, and thank you cards, at housebroken. and I went to red lipstick several months ago and really liked it -- if I had to do girlie gift shopping I'd go there. or maybe get some more of that awesome tea scent. -
oohhh, alafarnadia, you are right! the liquor stores.. i do support our neighborhood after all!

push-in prevention? i think i missed this one. do tell. HOWEVER, let's just say that i have found a new way to deal with the co-op and moreover my co-op shift. -
yeah, the bars and liquor stores were what I was referring to, also.
Because, really, what else is there to spend money on? Oh, yeah, rent. And heat.
Well, just rent. Fuck the heat, I'll just wear a sweater and drink more. -

Ok, more hating on Heights Coffee:
So I was doing some work at this wretched cafe again today, tolerating the weak coffee and horrid music because of the wifi convenience and relative availability of seats. I went to order another coffee (more out of courtesy because I'd been sitting for a while, not because I really wanted another cup). I asked for a refill, and the girl at the counter told me I couldn't get a refill on a large. I asked if she could just fill it up with the amount that would be in a medium, and she said ok. Then she charged me the full price for a medium! I asked why she did that, and she said that I couldn't get a refill because it was the wrong kind of cup. They never asked me what kind of cup I wanted when I originally ordered!
I can't wait until the new place on Washington opens up, because I'm definitely never giving my business to this hellhole on Flatbush again! :x :x :x :x

I am far too lazy to search for this, but my roommate has been raving about Muddy Waters for about...well, weeks. Prospect Coffee does, indeed, blow, but we already have a passable alternative.

do a search. find out why the place is evil. -

Just to be clear- my experience above was at Heights Coffee, not Prospect Perk.
There have been many complaints about Muddy Waters and its proprieter here (among other threads):
http://dailyheights.com/forums/viewtopic.php?t=325
I've never actually had any problem with Muddy Waters, although I don't think the coffee there is anything to rave about either. -
the owners of muddy waters also own that building and my friend's grandparents live in that building and the owners fucked over my friend's grandparents and personally i refuse to support a grandparent fucking business.
(+ extra solidarity b/c i took this apt. over from that friend!
) -
So again, I think we can all look forward to the opening of the new place on Washington! Hopefully it will be better than the other options nearby.
-
Carnivore, I don't understand your "refill" complaint. Do they actually give refills for free on certain sizes? I don't think free refills are the norm in most shops, other than maybe Dunkin Donuts or Burger King.
-
refills are for sure more of a west coast or pacific northwest thing.. alas..
