I need a new apartment. How can I find (besides craigslist)? — Brooklynian

I need a new apartment. How can I find (besides craigslist)?

edited November -1 in Prospect Heights
Well, I've lived in ProHo for the last couple of years but I now need to find a new apartment and I wonder if anyone has any tips on finding good places in the area other than Craigslist? I'd like to keep it rent stabilized, of course, but I'd like to find a nice building, too.

If you live someplace affordable and nice, maybe I could contact your landlord to see if they have any other places. I'm a pretty good candidate for tenancy, good credit, clean and responsible and all that.

Thanks!

  • i live in a tiny (275 sq ft) rent stabilized "one bedroom" (walk through) and just a week ago someone moved in to an open unit. not sure if and when they will have more, but it's a nice little building.

  • 3rd try to reply here: Im in a small, quiet rent stabilized bldg on Pacific. My downstairs neighbor is moving by spring I think. What's your rent range?
  • Subject: more about the hunt

I'm looking for a 1BR, for less than $1200, but hopefully like a nicer place (good floors, vermin free, safe block, preferably west of Washington). It is starting to seem like that is a little too much to ask, though...

    Thanks!
  • seems the range is too low for the area
  • might be tough to find a 1BR for 1200 around here. I know for a fact the one BR below mine (the one that will be vacant later this year) is going for +1700...
  • Since I moved to CH I've seen quite a few signs on buildings for apartments. It might be a good idea to walk or drive around and look for them. I never saw any signs out in Park Slope but there are quite a few around here. I think I saw one on Washington and Dean and there are more I can't remember where now.

I'll try to keep an eye out for them and let you know and if I can I'll write the number down too. Also, it took me 10 months but I found a rent stabilized 1 bedroom apartment that allows dogs for $1000 with no fee. It was through craigslist and I was lucky but it is possible. So many people told me there was no way I would find a place near PS for that price that allows dogs.

You should consider looking a little beyond Washington, you're more likely to find something. Good luck!
  • Even better, go to http://www.housingnyc.com/html/resources/zip.html and look at the rent stabilized buildings list for the area you want to live in. Then, if the phone number for the landlords isn't readily available on propertyshark.com , see if you can talk to the super of the building and ask about vacancies, or get the phone # from a tenant who's entering or leaving the building... My friends recently moved out of their (tiny) 1 bedroom in Prospect Heights (on the west side of Washington), where they had been paying under $1200. They exist, they just get snatched up really quickly.

We moved into our place on Underhill without realizing it was stabalized. We were, of course, pleasantly surprised.
  • I was walking past the laundromat on Vanderbilt today and noticed they had a sign up on their window advertising a 2-br for $1400.
  • I found a gorgeous renovated studio on CL with brand new everything (bathtub, toilet, refrigerator, stove, floors) and an exposed brick wall for $900 a month west of Washington. My bathroom is nicer than most hotel bathrooms. I don't think you're out of your price range. You just have to keep looking.
  • Yeah, it seems crazy but for example, my friend is in a studio just west of Washington on St. John's and pays just under $800. It's not a super nice apartment but it's damn cheap. So to me $1200 (or less!) for a 1-BR doesn't seem that far-fetched. Maybe I am deluded. I will check out that website, though, thanks!
  • I have friends who live on Park Place between Franklin and Classon. The apartments are long and skinny, and there are 4 or 5 vacancies in there right now! They're paying $1250. The apartments are not fancy, in fact are a little beat, with sloping, linoleum floors and crapppy bathrooms. Let me know if you want the address, I have to ask them tonight what number it is. Convenient to the shuttle, if nothing else, and alot of space for the dough.
  • I've lived in the same 2-br on Bergen & Underhill since I moved to NYC 3 years ago. When I moved in, the rent was $1,365. Today, it's $1,550.
  • I'm looking for a 2 bedroom for $2100 or less in PS, PH or thereabouts - if anyone knows of an opening, please PM me. April 1 move in date. Finders fee if we end up taking it. Thanks!
  • i am also in need of an apartment. id like to get something in one of the many buildings around the museum/library area (washington, underhill, vanderbilt, st johns, etc). the most i want to pay is $1200 (id rather not pay even this much, and im sure there is something out there.. but how to find it...) i tried talking to one of the supers outside of a building, but he directed me to washington realty, where they have no "no fee" apartments.. i also spoke to a management office who never got back to me about a 1 bedroom. i do renovations and repairs (carpentry, electric, plumbing, floors, sheetrock, plaster, paint, etc) and if anyone thinks they can help me out with getting or finding a decent place, id gladly return the favor. thanks
