Listen, dude, I'm not sure what your problem is...
just a thought. and let me be clear. I am not in oiseau's corner at all here. or on any topic (I think he is one of the most offensive people on this board, to be honest.). Your statement in your first post was a little offensive. The one about the only white people becoming victims are the ones "playing victim." I found that to be ignorant and offensive, having been a victim of a mugging myself. I didn't look the part of the victim at all. And I know and am friendly with more of this neighborhood, race aside, than almost anyone I know. People probably think I am crazy with all the stops I make to talk to all the people on the street. Sometimes people are in the wrong place at the wrong time. And sometimes those people are from all races.

That being said, I totally agree that when the victim is white and the perp isn't, the weight of the NYPD comes down hard, and victims of color are not given the same preferential treatment. I saw that when I was mugged too.

So my only bit to chime in here, BrooklynBoy, is that for the most part I agree with you, but I do think you might want to rethink your idea of "victims asking for it." As a woman, a recent mugging victim, and most of all, as someone who has worked with victims of crime in an advocacy role (I was a rape crisis counselor for more years than I could count), I found that comment to be bristling.

Ok guys... have back at your blugeoning each other.

Clearly you fell for it. There's only 1 person on this chain crazy enough to even think of something like that. Oiseau's little trick here should cause you to think real hard when you are watching someone take a perp walk on your evening news. All it takes is 1 devilish mind with some access....
  • Oiseau's little trick here should cause you (Brooklyn Boy) to think real hard about registering.

And don't get mad that I summed up the essence of your posts so brilliantly.

I didn't fall for anything. I was responding to the first post attributed to BrooklynBoy, whether that was you or someone else, by saying the statement of a victim asking for it is offensive. Doesn't matter if it was you who said it or the imposter BrooklynBoy... it was something that I thought wasn't cool.
  • Whatchuwant wrote: OK- you know what, Brooklyn Boy?!? My white (and super fine) ass has been here for ten years and I ain't leaving. Who the fuck are YOU to tell ME to go anywhere? You know, I supported you on another post once, and now I kind of feel like you just come on this board to hate the white man for shits and giggles. You really DON'T want to have an intelligent conversation/spirited debate- you just wanna hate.
I gave you props for having been here for decades as you've stated in the past, but at the same time, I can't help but feel you're one of those muthafuckas giving people dirty looks when they walk down the street, like you OWN the place.
And I'm NOT here defending all the white people on this board who come here to ask about the neighborhood. I frankly think they're pussies who shouldn't be here anyway, and I'm with you on that. But don't EVEN go there and tell me to leave. Shit is MY neighborhood, too.
You are another one who fell for Oiseau's little trick. I'm begining to wonder why you all fell for it so quickly. I mean, the trail is up there in black and white for you to see, and even though Oiseau has made statements here that are reminiscent of Bull Connors, you guys have ignored his remarks. When his racist statements didn't prove strong enough, and his "you're different from us" approach did not work (see e.g., "you're a guest"), he resorted to the good old Confederate tradition of just pointing his finger at me and lying....and you guys are eating it up without even stopping to chew. This is classic stuff right here!
  • Dude, you're the one defending the black criminal and making statements about it being "our neighborhood" so shut the fug up!
  • Oiseau wrote: And don't get mad that I summed up the essence of your posts so brilliantly.
Brilliant? uhhhh, no!!! But I'm not mad at all, Oiseau. You're doing more harm to your cause than I ever could. I have a community board meeting tonight and I'm going to print this post out and copy it for everyone in that meeting to review; and so much more for my ever being challenged at that meeting again. Your statements, your tricks, and especially the responses (did you see the one above about the "Big Scary Black Men") and nonresponses they garnered here...like I said, it's all really classic stuff!

That sucks. Maybe it's time for you to create a user id? Just a thought.

Now, If I had created a user id, would Oiseau have been able to inspire your lovely little statement about "Big Scary Black Men"? And that needed to b e said by you. Everything happens for a reason. This has been one of the most immuminating posts.
  • Everything does happen for a reason. Maybe, just maybe this will enlighten you to the fact that racism is a two-way street. Wake up, you're as racist, if not more, then anyone here. Get real.
  • Well, thankfully the record can speak for itself. The 2nd and 3rd posts in this thread are what got it started between you and I. One can easily review those posts, and the ones that follow, and see which of us is truly vile and to what extent. I only regret that you didn't post your picture so that your fellow Brooklynites could continue their support of you in person as you peruse Brooklyn.
  • Right, and it's your first post that was offensive, and I'm not the only one who believes this.
  • All I can say is you both make moving into your area one of concern only for the anger you both hold towards everyone.
And the comment by Brooklyn Boy about criminals being "true to their craft" is unbelievable. How is being a criminal a craft? Acting is a craft. Art is a craft. Dealing with people can be a craft.....but robbing people????
    That's not a craft, it's a crime.
That is if Brooklyn Boy really did write this.
And if not, then some people need to get a hobby and stop posting things uunder other people's names.
And you both need to chill out

Wow! If you interpreted that as support for criminals, and if that's the most unbelievable statement you've read in this thread, then it truly is hopeless.

Wow, if this isn't support for criminals, then you need to go back to school.

    Elementary school.
  • I'm outta here
  • Jeebus, this got SO nasty, so fast.

Dakotas way, please don't take this discussion as representative of the whole site -- although, sadly, this DOES often happen when race is a topic of discussion (granted, that's also true in lots of online forums where there's a degree of anonymity). I hope you got some good info in response to the other thread where you were asking about the area your daughter may move to. For what it's worth, I know lesbians in the area who feel quite safe. :)

Any person who made a post like that would have inspired a lovely little statement in response from me. I'm sorry that the sarcasm was above your head, but glad to immuminate you.

Love, daughter of a "Big Scary Black Man"
  • Yeah, ok. I fell for it. Silly me assuming everyone is being who they say they are (wow- the irony!). Really though, can't we all just get along?!?!

As you can see, I'm new to this forum. I've met quite a few of you in person, (bar crawls DO rule!) and I have found everyone to be genuine and lovely. Intelligent and kind. It's a shame that some choose to hide behind the screen name (your own or someone else's) to magnify their own self-hatred. As some of us know, what we hate in others, we hate in ourselves.

So, apologies to Brooklyn Boy and shame on you Oiseau!

...........................................You know, we ARE all BROOKLYNITES!!!!! And I, for one, love that about us.
  • Thanks once again for all the great info on the area. And I mean that sincerely.
I know my daughter will do fine and love where she's moving to.
I'm not looking at what happened here as a regular event. There are many issues that can raise such passion.
I just think things can be said in a much more reasonable and nonabrasive way to leave a more lasting impression than reverting to insults. I would think what you'd want most when you write something is that people will read it and think about it later. Maybe expand someone's view of the world.
    Anyhow, have a great weekend.
  • When someone says, "I am a white girl, I live in CH, is it safe for me travel a specific street", I find it offensive. It assumes that person feels vulnerable to being attacked because of her race. Why would she be attacked because of her race? Latent racial hatred on the part of the potential attacker or her whiteness is so desireable.
  • Whatchuwant wrote: So, apologies to Brooklyn Boy and shame on you Oiseau!
Why? Because I had a little fun and summed up what Brooklyn Boy was really getting at?

Please, tell that to the "guest". If he doesn't want his name used, then register, it's really not that hard, otherwise he'll be open to imposter posts forever.
  • Perhaps they are just racist (although I don't know why they would move to CH) or perhaps they are responding to the pd crime reports (public record) or to openly racial attacks that have been posted on the board and posts that say "Gunshot". Perhaps, when they started looking at Crown Heights, they hadn't considered that there was a problem till they started reading about things on this board or had someone treat them in a hostile manner (which HAS happened).

It is true that Black people are far more likely to be victims of crimes than white people are, but being concerned about crime in a neighborhood that admittedly has a high crime rate is a perfectly valid point, regardless of your race.
  • guest8, I hear you and I agree.

The expression of the white girl's fear tells us she has negative prejudices of black people (probably men, mostly). The poor girl can't tell the good guys from the bad guys when their all black. It shows the depth of racism in this country, and surprisingly, even here in NYC where we're supposed to be liberal if not progressive.

There are a few things that need to be addressed.

    1. The history of racism in America.

America was built on racism. Slaves from Africa, dangerous and abusive labor with Chinese, Irish, incarceration of Japanese-Americans during WWII and others. Events within our memories illustrate that racism is very close: the assassination of Dr. King, LA riots, Crown Heights riot, police shootings of unarmed black men. We have a very long way to go.

    2. The media messages that perpetuate prejudices.

    3. Cultural differences.

In some cultures, when people talk face to face, they stand very close to each other, moreso than most Americans. Many of us would be uncomfortable with this. Cultures have different 'rules' about dating, eating, working etc. For example, a white woman who has been insulated in a white community might feel apprehensive about being flattered by black men as she passes on the street because she is not used to it and does not know how to respond. While cat calls may be offensive in some cultures, in other cultures it's part of being a confident man, and knowing how to respond is part of being a confident woman.

    4. While we want to beleive that everyone who posts here is not misrepresenting himself, I think we can guess that some are. Some people are happy to say offensinve or incendiary things just to see if they can a flame war going. We have to learn when to avoid such conversations, or at least respond without getting all bent out of shape.

guest8 wrote: Why would she be attacked because of her race?
Because someone may think, "Gee look at the white girl, I bet she has money."

That someone may not think that if they looked at a black girl.

    just saying.
  • wow. the only thing I can say here, is that back in time I lived in CH, it was absolutely the case that the young black women received the most horrific forms of verbal and physical sexual harrassment on the street. I got comments occaisionally, usually of the "snowflake" variety, but it never amounted to the level of disrespect, humiliation, and intimidation that these young women had to endure on a daily basis. Some of these girls were still in middle school or junior high! It was definitely one of the worst things about living in CH.
  • Oiseau- I say shame on you, cause really, who are you to take someone's id (registered or not) and sum up what BB is "really trying to say?" I don't need you to sum up anything for me, dude. It's just obnoxious.
    Just sayin!
  • i am white. i was assaulted today at 5pm by 12 black men at on eastern parkway at rogers. thankfully, i broke free, police captured suspects, and i only sustained a swollen eye and bruises. i forgive them and love my neighborhood.
  • Holy crap, ninj4. Glad you're okay.

A modly reminder to all: Please remember the rules (as always, readable from any page of this site at the big honkin' READ THE RULES link at the top) and BE NICE.

Oiseau, hijacking the name of a regular = not nice.

Namecallers one and all = not nice.

Brooklyn Boy, please consider registering to prevent your name from being hijacked again.
  • OK. Get the Hell over it. ALL I asked is if a WOMAN would be safe. There was never any mention of RACE in the initial blog. Go back and read it for yourself.
For those of you with so many other issues between you..
    GET OVER IT!
And know what that started this particular question was not asked that a certain race was safe. That was an assumption on your part, and you know what happens when people assume????
They make an ASS out of U and ME.....ASSUME! It was a guest on the board that made such a thing of a question that she probably would have asked of anywhere her daughters were moving.
You are making so much of a simple question. What is the deal?
Amazing that a simple question raised such a ridiculous situation is beyone belief.
And if you assault people or know those who do...............STOP IT!
    OK? It's just that simple.
And Oiseau and Brooklyn Boy, get over it and stop the differences and seek the simliarities. Read each others blogs and see how similar they are in a way and make a difference in your community. If you don't like how it's going then CHANGE IT! and Stop complaining about each other.
And absolutely NO ONE has the right to harass anyone else. You get it? It's just that simple.
  • I want to apologize for losing my cool. That wasn't right.
Thank you to all who responded postively to my question and good luck to all.
    Be well
