Poor vulnerable white girl

My question exactly. It may not be corporately correct in it's content. But if it is someone who got it together enough to buy their own home and are renovating it to rent out, and are writing it as a laymen, then give them credit.

Every black person I've ever talked to who has read it has just been frankly shocked and disgusted at how racist it is. I used to try posting to it, but I've come to the conclusion that this board is basically a space for racist white crown heights people to talk nervously about their desire for better coffee shops, their real estate investments, and their fear/hatred of blacks (albeit in very carefully smoothed out language that is actually not very subtle). Whenever anybody calls them on it, they circle the wagons and take turns bashing whoever has dared to point this out.
Don't lose all hope, Annie...I too often feel that this forum is nothing more than a modern day British South Africa Club. But, at the very least, it's important to know who lives around you and the thoughts that are running throughout their heads. I was floored to see how most of the board ignored some of the racist messages above and instead, circled their wagons around whatever politically incorrect nuances they could squeeze out of my post. But hey...it's good to know that when afraid, people tribe-up (like they do in prison)...regardles of the equities. I've come to know a good number of the new people moving into the neighborhood, and many of those relationships have been great...but I can't help but to fear that I'm exchanging smiles & greetings with the likes of people like Oiseau...that just makes me nauceous. -

So what is wrong with this ad exactly? This is a serious question, not trying to be a smart ass. Is it because the place is so expensive? Is it racist to renovate your house and try to maimize the rent?

I just bought this 2 family house and am in the process of renovating, but I would love to have a tenant lined up for April 15. This is a 1920's brick bungalow house and has much of the original architectural detail in tact. The apartment is the entire first floor. The overall size of the apartment (minus the front entry hall) is 20x62. The large galley style kitchen is being completely gutted and will have brand new stainless steel appliances including a dishwasher. The bathroom is also being totally gutted & will be brand new. There is a brand new washer & dryer. There is a dining room with great molding on the wall, a living room and a separate front sunroom. There are 3 bedrooms. The master is a nice size. The other bedroom is a good size, and the third is rather small. You can also pick out any paint color you like and it can be done before you move in. The large partially-finshed, but rough basement is all yours and can be used for whatever you like. It could be a home office or a fashion designer's or artist's studio or just an extra hangout room. It already has the cool 1970's wood paneled bar. There is also a 2 car garage and you can have one of the spaces. Dogs or cats are welcomed. The neighborhood is very nice & green. The museum & botanic gardens are just a block and a half away. The 2,3,4,5 trains are 2 blocks. The cute shops & restaurants of park slope & prospect heights are very close & there will be a Starcbucks coming 2 blocks away. You are welcome to come see the space in its "This Old House" construction phase. I have no photos yet since it is gutted down to the bare studs & not ready for its close-up. Let me know if you are interested. No brokers please unless you have a specific client who may be interested.
I'm not seeing why the ad is dishonest. or Italian. or smarmy. maybe a bit pricey, but I'm not sure why that's shocking. -

Anniewild, I thought you had that chip removed?

ok, seriously what is wrong wtih the ad?

have you actually read you posts lately? you appear to be taking the binary road anniewilde adores: fighting X on Y racism with Y on X racism. it's just as appealing to read as the next racist's post.

But the "next racist's" post didn't inspire a response from you, did it neighbor? And I'm not sure what YOU think those quotes demonstrate, but your logic isn't all that clear to me. You should've waited another round or 2, or even for another thread, to make that point...don't worry, I'll still be here keeping it real. -

That's because black people can't be racist.Brooklyn Boy wrote: but I can't help but to fear that I'm exchanging smiles & greetings with the likes of people like Oiseau...that just makes me nauceous.
Don't worry guy, I wouldn't live in Crown Heights if you paid me. Sorry, just too much racism over there.
oh and btw, Brooklyn Boy you're the biggest racist there is on this thread. -

well, I'll give you two quotes from one of your first posts and maybe you'll figure it out:Brooklyn Boy wrote: The black-on-white incidents of crime are few and far between and probably have only happened where the victim played the role of the victim so much (looking & acting petrified; avoiding eye contact at all costs; etc.) that the criminal just couldn't be true to his craft and let that one go.
Brooklyn Boy wrote: Whites have been moving around our neighborhoods for decades
I also think you are being deliberately obtuse when reading the posts you're attributing as racist. if you are asking me to respond specifically to whatever issues you're having with Oiseau's posts, I'd say you're doing a good job of that. everyone else you are picking apart or attacking, well, like I said, I think you're being deliberately obtuse. perhaps the most informative thing you've posted, however, is your support of anniewilde's point of view. -
oh, and I don't mean informative in a particularly flattering way.

alafairnadia wrote: oh, and I don't mean informative in a particularly flattering way.
I guess you meant "illuminating", and I'm not looking to be flattered by you or anyone else here so I understood the sarcasm. And YES...I agree with Annie insofar as the perception that I often have of the participants of this forum (sorry if specifying what I agreed with killed your point). Either way, I don't think that either of the statements you quoted were even slightly racist...and I don't even understand how the 2nd sentence you quoted even offends anyone...but I don't want to get in another meaningless exchange with another Oiseau so I guess we (not just you and I...but you, Oiseau and all that agree with you guys and I) can agree to disagree on that. But don't for a second think that the term "racist" has the same effect on me that it has on you...I'm not the "cool black guy" here that says everything you want to hear and stays away from saying what you'd rather not hear. If the emperor passes through Brooklyn, he WILL hear that he is butt naked. -
Subject: Definite harassment!
Only read part of the thread, but here's my two cents: I lived in Crown Heights for over a year (Franklin & Carroll), and I'm a single, white female. I don't know what it's like for the black women out there, but I was DEFINITEY harassed on a daily basis, and thanks to that harassment, I moved out when my lease was up. I was called all sorts of derogatory names (hey snowflake, snow white, etc) and on a few occasions, I was followed. This was wearing jeans, sneakers, and a sweater-- not like I was dressed to go out.
No woman (or guy), no matter what their color or race, deserves that kind of treatment. It sucked. -
"Brooklyn Boy you're the biggest racist there is on this thread"
Ummm....he's a troll, so you shouldn't let him get to you.

I'm just wondering (no, really, totally JUST curious!) where you do live, Oiseau?
I make no judgments whatsoever. Hell, PM me if you don't wanna announce it. -
filmlover44 wrote: "Brooklyn Boy you're the biggest racist there is on this thread"
unfortunately, it looks like there are 2 or 3 trolls on this thread (and I don't mean you). ah well. the pain of the internets. I'm just waiting for someone to pop up with a hitler/nazi comment. I mean, we already got the reverse of "i'm not a racist - some of my best friends are black".

Maybe we should all just meet and hash it out. It seems so safe to just post. Everyone seems so passionate about their views, but sometimes writing about it on the internet may get misconstrued...anyone willing?
-
Is Vinnie somehow an Italian name? Is "Annie" (my real name, actually, a "biracial, Czech-black-Scottish-Native American name?) I actually think that the attempts to call me anti-Italian are funny. Perhaps you all need to get out more and meet a wider range of people. There are actually people with all sorts of names out there.
The Ad: Gross because it's dishonest and represents gentrification at its most slimey--calls Franklin and President "The Brooklyn Museum area?" Hahahahah.
And as far as Alfairnada goes--frankly--I think you have many, many more issues than just the fact that you're clearly extremely racist--your pompous, smug, boorish, and dependably self-serving generalities are far too frequent. As far as your pathetic attempts to call me a racist--I think you should look the word up in the OED. The way you're using it is actually incorrect. Should I give you the college education you so clearly lack? "Talking about race" and "pointing out racism" are not "racist." "Racism" is the act of using social, political, or economic power to create SYSTEMS of oppression that function at a far more than personal level. Doesn't mean black people can't be racist, but your kneejerk, reactionary, and frankly FOX NEWS style of calling any conversation about race "racist" is both intellectually challenged and personally repulsive. I would think, seriously, about getting a life outside of bashing black people who dare to speak out on Brooklynian.
Also--to all those "Guests" who love to make racist cracks--
You are pathetic cowards. IF any of you would like to register, and to meet me face to face over coffee, you'd see for yourselves exactly who and what I am. -
The majority of the people on this board are white. They act in tandem, generally, to trash/pick apart, and insanely/inanely enough, refer to any blacks on the board who speak out as "racists." It's just preposterous. Alfairnada is a central example. Anybody who doesn't agree with him/her (not sure, sorry) is a "troll," while anybody who REALLY doesn't agree is a "racist." I'm also pretty amused that Alfairnada has decided I am the equivalent of a white person with one black friend. Does being biracial count as that? Golly gee. I am so happy to have my own identity appropriated in that way. I guess I am actually an angry black separatist who is trumpeting my white family and friends just to gain points. Reality is--I am just human. Most of the white or black or Indian or Asian or whatever people I know would vomit at the racist crap regularly expressed on this board.
It doesn't matter if you've posted Ten Billion Times. It doesn't make you right. Calling other people "Trolls" doesn't make you Immanuel Kant, and calling any black person who disagrees with you a "racist" isn't some sort of winning rhetorical move. In fact, it's all really straight out of the Fox News/Newt Gingrich playbook. You can also look at the Powerline Blog for more examples of that. Right wingers love to call blacks "racist" when they criticize anything about the status quo. Since when did this space become that sort of heaven for the deluded mumblings of a white majority with too much time on their hands? Seriously. Y'all really, really need to move to Scarsdale. There is a majority of blacks in Crown Heights, and even in Prospect Heights. There is a majority of whites on the Brooklynian board, and people seem determined to keep it that way. Wishful thinking? I'd love to see any of you highly eloquent denouncers of black "racism" go out on the streets of Crown Heights and speak that way to your neighbors. It would be very...amusing...
I'll also be sure to tell my Italian brother in law that "Vinnie" is a racial slur against Italians. I think he'd probably bust a gut laughing. -
ROTFLMAO
some of those observations are spot on Annie... -
look, I am registered. and I give EVERYONE on these boards plenty of opportunities to meet me. in fact, some people who have traded barbs with me have PM'd me and we've met for a drink and hashed out disagreements face to face. I'd say that every time, we're on the same page, just coming at it from two different angles. the reason I say they PM'd me to meet up is because I, frankly, make myself available for 'confrontation' in person quite frequently between happy hours, bar crawls, air hokey, and other activities organized on the boards.
I think it's also funny that a lot of folks on this thread are making assumptions about the race of the folks posting. there is more diversity on these boards than folks assume.
in any case, it's pretty obvious that this thread has careened into the land of "you're racist" "no, you're racist". while I do have the ability to lock it, I'm going to leave that decision in the hands of the admin who actually lives in crown heights. -
Sigh.
I have to agree with Alafairnadia here -- my saying that will probably result with further accusations of "circling the wagons" but this thread's been unproductive from the get-go, with all the sockpuppetry and name-calling and nastiness from both sides.
Locked.
