attention punx! let's take stock of the punk quotient in PH

Subject: attention punx! let's take stock of the punk quotient in PH

alright, there's me and stuart and isa, who, despite declaring herself post-punk can still namecheck nausea and a.p.p.l.e. with the best of 'em. there's also a septum-piercing guy on the crazy block of st. john's (my former home, by the way, before i went "uptown" one block) who refuses to acknowledge my existence when we pass one another. who else? i know you're out there, and i know you listen to black flag.

  • I used to spike my mohawk with a mixture of hair gel and elmer's glue, once set myself on fire with lighter fluid, once got thrown over a bar and broke my nose at a CoC concert and have the entire Black Flag, Misfits, Bad Brains, Cramps, Dead Kennedys, Circle Jerks, Ramones and more on my MP3 player. I like Hardcore a lot too. My new favorite is North Side Kings. Their singer knocked out Danzig backstage with one punch.

Bad Brains was the most intense small pit I've ever been in, at Visage in Orlando (maybe the size of CBGB). I also made t-shirts for my friends when we saw Social Distortion in college. Go me.

The most punk thing I've seen in this town is Gogol Bordello. Those Eastern Europeans sure can slam. North Six is a good venue for seeing them.

Bad Brains RULE. I have a few live recordings of them that are far better than any of their studio stuff. It's such awesome beat-your-head-against-the-sidewalk shit.
  • I'm into all that shit. Plus other old school favorites like the Sex Pistols, the Clash (obviously), the Buzzcocks, Husker Du, etc.
  • Hey thor, where did I name check Nausea and APPLE? That's funny. UP THE PUNKS!

wait, so what's the point of this? can we start a full-moon-pogo competition on washington or compare tattoos or something, fueled by fugazi and bikini kill and cheap beer?

Fandom does not have to justify itself. However, if someone wants to fuel me with cheap beer, I won't refuse. Just not ironic PBR, thank you.

Hollandia or Upper Canada are your choices from my fridge. then again, after a mere 5 days in London, everything here is cheap. jeez louise.
  • I'm fond of SNFU and Dead Kennedys, but I'd hardly call myself punk.
  • Subject: The point?

If we punx, former punx, and casual listeners of punk rock were to unite (ha!), perhaps we could convince a PH bar to allow a punk-rock DJ night once in a while. If there's anything positive to be said about our kind, it's that we tend to imbibe copious amounts of beer/liquor/cider/spacebags/glue.

Anyway, I bet some of the casual listeners out there might become more regular listeners if they heard some of the amazing, more obscure stuff, especially by old Brooklyn bands (which I would love to play!).

    Who is with me?

I've heard them play the Dead Kennedys there before.

Talk to Roger Paz, who tends bar at Freddy's. He's in an occasional punk band, and DJs sometimes at Motor City Bar in Manhattan. He might have some suggestions for you.

The Lucky 13 Saloon in Park Slope might be a possibility as well.
  • I'm sure Soda would do it -- their music person, DJ Shuf, has been trying to get a lot of different types of music played. He messes around with a lot of experimental electronica, and has tried to keep hipster-wannabees from fleeing to billyburg by playing dance-punk. I'm sure, if approached in a reasonable manner, he and/or Toly would be open to having a punk night. If DJ Shuf is around tonight I'll ask him. If not, he'll be there Friday night.
  • I'm having a punk flashback (as is much of this board . . .?) about letting the crummy college bar I dj'd in the early 80s let me have a NEW WAVE/SKA night. One heavenly evening where the Specials and English Beat replaced Kool and the Gang, Michael Jackson, and "Build Me Up Buttercup" for the frat boys . . .

How about a show of hands of who has ever had a mohawk...or mixed alcohol and speed at a Ramones show . . .

Actually, NOFX has a pretty cool cover of Build Me Up Buttercup.
  • i'm not now, so i never was...wait, that's sXe.

i'd be up for a punk night though, i clearly don't get to do enough pointing and shouting along with the lyrics anymore.

Me neither, but I have all this pent up rage...

Fuck it, who wants a broken nose?!?!? Let's do this!!!
  • dude, f'n BIKE PUNX... critical mass brooklyn, friday night... sept. 16(?).. grand army plaza? i forget...
  • by the way, my boyfriend cleaned out our storage room today, and found all the old chestnuts we had stashed away...i came home to him floor punching around the apartment *drunk off his ass* pointing and shouting all the lyrics to firestorm. he should have just x'd up for shits and giggles i though. its a good thing that all his really old records are safely back in the 'cuse, because i don't think i could have tolerated coming home to youth of today.

so yeah um, a confluence of events here has led me to the conclusion that i'd *so* be up for doing a dj set on punx night. and i promise not to play ANY green rage. but i will play some fugazi, all the kids love fugazi.

I thought it was the second Friday of the month?

  • If you like fugazi I highly recommend "The Evens", Ian McKayes new band.

Dunno, but it seems they all stick to the same label, Dischord.
  • Subject: Any news?

Did anyone talk to their friends in high places (ie, PH bars)? I'd love to talk off-line about the possibilities of punk night in PH!
  • I know this thread is only! 5 months old but my wife and I are moving into CH @ New York Ave the last week of January. With all of the negative stuff you read in the posts about CH this makes us happy. We really want to meet like minded people in/ near the neighborhood without the hipster doofus trappings of Williamsburg.
