Cocoa Bar — Brooklynian

Cocoa Bar

Has anyone been to Cocoa Bar yet (7th Ave b/n 3 & 4)? I noticed it the other night and it was empty. I couldn't tell if it's a coffee shop or a bar or some kind of hybrid like tea lounge (which i used to like in the evenings, but is now overrun with laptops and i can never find a seat).

  • never a good sign for a place if you can't figure out what it's trying to be. i give the cocoa bar 3 more months.
  • Subject: cocoa bar rocks!

not so hard to figure out. this place is AWESOME. every time i've been there its been busy. their coffee is one of the BEST i've ever had. they have an incredible wine list and have you seen the garden??? oooh- and of course, the huge chocolate selection OMG - this place will last forever....
  • poor Cocoa Bar . . . a pale pretender next to The Chocolate Room . . .

    The Chocolate Room
86 Fifth Ave. at St. Marks Place,
    (718) 783-2900
  • Seriously. The Chocolate Room is great, the staff and owners are friendly and the treats are fantastic.
  • Subject: soooo much better

cocoa bar is SO much better than choc room. the wine list is extensive, the couches are very comfortable, their selection of chocolates, their amazing coffee menu, the location, the environment. come on people! has anyone actually compared for themselves? its such an obvious choice. cocoa bar is amazing! their hot chocolates are totally addictive
  • I can only imagine these guest posts are shills for Cocoa Bar.

Yes, I've tried them both. And unless Cocoa has undergone some magic transformations in it's young life . . . well, I just can't imagine.

I have these friends, a new Couple in a sort of cute but annoying way, who are constantly swooning and having chocolate dates . . . they'd want me to tell you The Chocolate Room is the place. I think they were comped a misordered plate of something delicious there, which is also nice. Chocolate has good attitude.
  • Cocoa Bar has really good coffee and chocolate drinks as well as a relatively wide selection of nibbles. But the main brand of chocolate they carry is Leonidas, which isn't to everybody's taste (they're on the sweet, creamy side). Chocolate Room seems to cater a bit more to "serious" choco-lovers with high-cocoa-content offerings but I'm not sure the quality of the desserts is consistent enough. I'd rather go back to the Cocoa Bar, their espresso is fab plus that end of the Slope really needs some help--food options are pretty sad on 7th Ave in general.
  • Subject: cocoa loco

i agree with the last comments. cocoa bars espresso beats any i've ever had and they did a really great job with the atmosphere. their desserts are really good too. true about the leonidas but their line of chocolate is killer. thank goodness they've come to 7th ave!
  • Related, I'm not the biggest chocoholic--no, not because I hate it, but my stomach was trashed by dot-com era stress--but I went to Jacques Torres Chocolate Haven today (350 Hudson Street, New York, NY 1001) and man oh man. I didn't know what a decent chocolate drink was until I had stuff there. The drinks are nice and cool and the most real chocolate--not overly sugar/fat-ladden like most are--I've ever had since... I dunno...

He has a Brooklyn store too (in DUMBO). The chocolate-covered candied ginger is my favorite dessert ever!

The dumbo location is also nice b/c you can get your yummies and go sit by the water. I like to go in a post-rice food coma. cause chocolate and cream always make for a good pick-me-up.
  • Teppaz is helping me understand the Cocoa Bar craze.

But O Torres . . . he studied the Oaxacan chile chocolate thing, and the Ur hot chocolate that they make in that magic place . . . mmmmm Torres . . . which explains why I like Chocolate Room.
  • I'm actually about to move from PH to PS (we tried hard to stay in PH but couldn't find anything) so I have a vested interest in the Cocoa Bar keeping up the quality of its offerings!
  • If you like Torres' chocolate bars, check out Cocoa Bar's spicy bar among others. I guarantee you'll be a convert.
  • i happened upon cocoa bar the other day while walking home along 7th. although the staff seemed completely flummoxed by the cash regsiter computer and had to ask me for my order 3 times, the coffee was quite good. i still wish gorilla coffee had opened a branch on 7th (preferably NORTH 7th) but cocoa bar is a decent alternative.
  • Subject: Where is it again?

Where is the Cocoa Bar again? I know i've walked past it but can't remember where (i'm new to the area)...

Hey while i'm writing, my parents are visiting tomorrow night (and they're somewhat hard to please), can anyone suggest a nice Greek or Italian-american place to go for dinner that won't break the bank? Has anyone been to "Rosewater" where is that place? (I've heard it was nice).
    Thanks,
    Z
  • From lowercase L, a Park Slope blog dedicated to William Levin's obsession/annoyance with hand-written signs with letters in all-caps, except for the letter L ("It looks like an uppercase i ... WHY DO PEOPlE WRITE lIKE THIS?"):

glassofpino.jpg"This chalkboard menu sits outside the new Cocoa Bar, a coffee, chocolate and wine lounge around the corner from me on 7th Ave. in Park Slope, Brooklyn. What makes this sign extra special is not just the GlASS, but the GlASS of PINOT BlANCO ... or is it BIANCO?! See, Pinot Bianco is the Italian term for a varietal pressed from the family of Pinot grapes, and Pinot Blanco is the Latin term. So is this a case of double lowercase L's, with GlASS and the Latin BlANCO? And then there's that GIANDUJA Chocolate ...

    LOL
I heard a guy from Long Tan punched a guy from Press sandwich shop over the lame-assedness of Press' chalkboard. It might have started with a little erasure or chalky sass.

Long Tan has long had a lyrical, topical, and ever-changing message . . .

Too bad their food isn't better.

    yup

but they make a mean mojito
  • I found the awning -- "chocolate, coffee, wine" -- extremely promising, but I was disappointed when I finally went. My hot chocolate and pistachio bread were average and overpriced. The prices are enough to make one blush
  • Can we talk about "Comfortzone" on 5th ave? I'm scared to go into a place seemingly named after a sanitary napkin.

    Sorry, was that crude?
  • Subject: hot chocolate so good

today was a raIny day. had the best hot chocolate eVer at cocoa bar. can't fInd theIr websIte but found this sIte instEad. i can't believe someone actually spent so much time taking a picture of their board and then demeaning it. try their hot chocolate - it'll ease the agression. another week of rain... stay dry

I'm stunned anyone would go to Cocoa Bar over The Chocolate Room...everything at TCR is amazing. They have pastry chefs making everything daily. All the desserts I've had at Cocoa Bar have been dry, stale and over priced to afford the 7th Ave. rents. The atmosphere is a bit like starbucks! Plus they don't have homemade ice cream. This weekend TCR did a spiced Valrhona cake with orange ice cream...to die for..much better seating for a dessert cafe...

It is unfair to bash a business that you don't like and at the same time promotes a similar type business. Very suspicious! If you have had a bad experience with a particular business, just don't go back, but please don't come on these boards and denigrate businesses.

I don't think the previous post was unfair. I agree that it's bad form to post stuff like that without registering, but the person was pretty specific in his/her criticism. It wasn't just general "bashing". Comparing the relative merits of local businesses in the same category is one of the things this board is all about.

    right.
it's like they have a disease
  • The Chocolate Room has such a better, more romantic, inviting atmosphere than Cocoa Bar. It's wonderful to get the complimentary Valhrona sorbet when seated. Cocoa Bar has terribly slow service and everything is stale and overpriced. They should also give a list of chocolates and prices -- not on the menu so you have to get up and look in the case.

I went to Long Tan this week, and they have their original chef back. Much, much better. mmmmm....kangaroo...
