nostrand avenue: fulton - eastern parkway

Its not deserted at night, but it is a LOT less busy than during the day. I find that the southern end (closer to EP) is a bit busier as there is a korean greengrocer that stays open very late (it was open at 2am one night) and there are a couple of bodegas that are 24 hrs. I think there is less traffic when you get into the blocks north of St Marks until Atlantic. Never had a problem, but the latest I take the train is about midnight. After that I car service or cab it.

Thanks so much for the advice. Looking at the crime map, Crown Heights has a good track record - way better than Prospect Heights.

As much as I hate to tell you . . . if you are talking about *our* crime map, it was started in Prospect Heights, so events in all the other neighborhoods are underrepresented. -
Yikes!

I regularly walk home at all hours from the 3 stop at Nostrand Ave. I personally have never had a problem, but you certainly need to be aware of your surroundings (as in almost any area of a city late at night). Granted I don't have to walk that far, but I have walked further down Nostrand on certain occasions. Some of the blocks can get a bit more desolate as you go further north towards Atlantic. My roomate has encountered the occasional racially charged remark coming from the A at Nostrand late at night, but nothing more.
Luckily you have the fruit market and the corner store that are open 24 hrs. between the Eastern Parkway and Lincoln Pl. I've also had friends (including my tiny girflriend) visit at all hours of the night and been fine. -

Yup! Its one of those typical Korean fruit/veggie/misc. groceries that you get all over Brooklyn. Fruit's real good (super fresh) and I use the veggies all the time for cooking. The only night they close on is Sunday. Besides being able to get food all night, another plus is that the light from the store considerably decreases the sketchiness that you sometimes get on dark strips of Nostrand late at night. -
I live on Nostrand in that stretch. Never had a problem in the 8 months I 've lived there. I regularly take the train home (A stop on Fulton) at all hours of night 12am - 4 am and never had or seen a problem. Just keep your eyes open. on a side note ...There are some good eateries there.

I live just off Nostrand and also take the A home from Manhattan and walk along this stretch every day, sometimes in that 12am - 4am time period. So far without a problem. I'm also a pretty big guy, which could be a contributing factor. It seems pretty well lit and though not as bustling as the day time, there are usually other people out and about. -

Jeff is so old school that he probably thinks North Crown Heights is still "the ghetto". That's the trouble with old timer's: they can't live in the present. In their minds, NCH will always be like it was in the 1980's, that is, going down like a rock. They'll reminisce endlessly about the "good ol' days" and how wonderful Nostrand Avenue used to be, the wonderful shops, the friendly merchants, how clean and safe it used to be, yadayadayada. Well, get over it Jeff. Black people exist, they're not all bad and the 50's are dead forever... get with the program.
Just because you're over 50 doesn't mean you have to act old. The future is ready for you, are you ready for it! -

I will bet that you would not say that to Mr. Jeff's face. If you did your name might end up on the wall. -

Mr. Jeff is a tough guy, but as he once told my group of friends,"If you don't tread on me, I won't tread on you" We know him 15 years and he has been o.k.--even helped a brother that was going to rikers by giving his family frere rent fort a couple of months. He is not a bad guy. -
who cares if he'd say it to Jeff's face? As if that refutes what Captain Planet has to say. Those types of threats do little to dissuade people on the internet. sounds like you're as backward as Jeff.

Nostrand isn't deserted at night. I walk my dog on that street in the evenings and it's fine...

Subject: nostrand avenue and mr. Jeff
I am what some of you newbees would call an old timer, not because I am old, but I lived my entire life of 35 years in Bed Sty. My family has delt with Mr. Jeff for all that time. My mom has the most respect for him, as I do also. Granted he is a tough guy, and if you crossed him you might of dissappeared, But my family did not see that side of him. He has quietly helped so many of us over the years when times were much harder. Today real estate is booming, but in those lean years when the neighborhood was in disrepair, Mr. Jeff invested to keep the neighborhood from total devistation. I also happen to know that he helped a neighbor with college tuition when his mom died. So Captain Planet don't talk bad about someone you do not know. -
who the fuck is jeff?

Jeff Corwin is a guy who owns tons of buildings along Nostrand Ave. I've known him probably 10 years anyways. I've attempted to have several real estate dealings with him and always found him very "old school" which just not my scene. He married into a family that owned literally half of the commercial buildings along Nostrand Ave in Crown Heights and Bed-Stuy. My impression is that the old man gave him Crown Heights to manage. I've always heard great stories about the father-in-law but not so many about Jeff.
I'm sure he's helped some folks along the way and I in no way mean to disrepect him for the positive things he has done. It's just that some folks don't seem to want to grow, you know. I don't see him at this point as a positive force in the community.
He moved to Deer Park on Long Island a long time ago and only comes into the 'hood twice a week to collect his rent money. I saw him only once at a community board meeting where his old school approach just played, well, pretty old school, which is to say it didn't go over too well. He's told me that he's divesting of his Crown Heights real estate and investing in shopping malls and the like in warm states. Sounds like a retirement plan to me, so I say, power to him. If you don't want to be here, then it's best to move on. -

If Mr. Jeff is "OLD SCHOOL", thats the class I want to be in.

I understand what Capt Planet writes about has largely happened...he has sold and refocused his energies elsewhere...so no need to further romanticize/rhapsodize about the past...turn your attention and thoughts to the other thread on top of this ----what does Nostrand Avenue need...might be a more useful discussion...

I just came accross this site. This is great. I also know Mr. Jeff. Back about 15 years ago I interned at the Crown Hights Service Center. Mr. Jeff was the landlord. He was constantly working with the director on projects to improve the neighborhood. One thing I do Know Is that he contributed a lot of money to the Toy's for Tot's program. He insisted that he remain anonymous. For many years he secretely supported that program. Even though the neighborhood thought he was a tough guy, he actually helped so many of our families. -

if mr. Jeff is selling, Who is buying?????? -
no "rubbernecking" allowed...its happened...he's sold and others have bought...anything else is largely irrelevant....WOLF - only thing relevant thing you should divine from the sales/purchases are that others who have a view towards the present and future of the neighbporhood and have "spoken" with their investment...and so for the OP, things are looking towards a change - so you can either come to the neighborhood for the present and future of it, or go to another neighborhood that most likely has issues all the same as Crown Heights North - but don't have the wonderful housing stock, (which Landmark has recognized), the solid Mass Transit infrastructure (2,3, 4, 5, A, C and LIRR) and cultural goodies (BCM, Jewish Children's Museum, Libraries, West Indian Labor Day Parade) and a rich longstanding history of proud folks - homeowners and renters alike. Still at a generally affordable price...

I have been monitering this sight for a few months, but never saw so much action. This man mr. Jeff has got a lot of people writing. WHY?
Is Mr Jeff the white dude with the Italian posse? -

THATS HIM. -
Subject: nostrand -- Mr. Jeff
Speaking of mr. Jeff, does anyone remember the nice italian guy Neil that used to work for him? What ever happened to him? -
Subject: NOSTRAND AVENUE
Neil retired and his brother took over for him. They are all white crooks stealing from the black man.
Howdy, Stranger!
