ASSAULTED on Prospect PL.
Last night I was heading home to 551 Prospect Pl., after a Passover Seder. It was around 2 am and I had just walked from the Franklin Avenue 2/3. I took a left onto Prospect and was walking on the North side of the street. I passed by a group of 6 to 8 guys sitting on a stoop, before walking under the Shuttle overpass.
I then heard a guy running up behind me, on my right side. I was of course nervous and kept walking at a steady pace. He approached me from the right, still sort of jogging and asked me if I had the time...I said "no." He then asked if I had a cigarette...I said "no" again and continued walking. He seemed to back off a little. But, then I heard him approaching quickly from behind. I glanced to my right just in time to see the blur of his full-swing, as he struck me with his right fist in my right temple.
I hit the ground hard. I got up quickly and the guy seemed to have already backed off. He didn't move in and hit me again, while I was down or try to rob me. I didn't want to take any chances, so after getting up, I ran over to my building. I was shocked that I had been hit and hadn't realized that my glasses had been knocked off.
The guy who hit me was dressed in a black bomber jacket and baggy light-blue jeans. I believe he had on white sneakers. He was of medium build and medium height, probably 5'7" to 5'10." He had dark hair that was short; buzzed, but not shaven. His skin tone was a medium shade, so his race was somewhat ambiguous. I would guess that he was Hispanic or half White/half African American.
I called the police when I returned to my apartment. They arrived about ten minutes later and we drove around the neighborhood in the squad car, looking for the guy. We had no luck finding him and the officers advised against filing a report, so I didn't. They were courteous and professional and dropped me back at my apartment, when we'd finished looking around.
I wasn't badly hurt by the assault. I've got a minor black eye, a scraped knee and elbow, and a pair of broken glasses. What concerns me now is the damage done to my level of comfort and security in my neighborhood. I've now lived here over a year and although I've had some tense moments in the past, I have never been directly confronted with violence.
Sometime last year, one of my roomates was threatened with a steak knife to his back, as he approached our front door. In that case the guy was just looking for money. Since I wasn't robbed in this recent incident, I assume this guy just wanted to hit me and have a laugh about it with his friends. I don't understand what prompts this sort of unchecked aggression. I'm a pretty unobtrusive and peaceful guy and it angers me to be the target of this random act of violence.
I'm concerned for the safety of my neighbors and I hope this account stands as warning for everyone to be on gaurd. Sadly, we cannot trust the people around us to have value and respect for their fellow man/woman. Please be careful and please speak up when you see suspicious things going on around you. Thanks.

Sorry this happened, and glad that you are okay.
Why would they advise against filing a report? So they can "pad" their stats while avoiding the paperwork? -
are you white or asian? cause i had this happen to me alot in some areas of brooklyn guys would just come up and beat the crap out of me for being diffrent. usually in working class areas usually in the 80 and mid 90's. havent happen since than.
-
oh sorry
that it happen to you man. we should really get a posse thing going in the area. -
I don't understand why they'd advise you against filing a report. Does that mean the police will do nothing? It seems like it's likely that he hangs out in the area where it happened, and they have a good description, so they could find him.
-
I'm sorry that this happened to you, but glad you're okay. The rising assaults in PH have everything to do with the fact African-Americans are being pushed out of neighborhood that they've inhabited for many years. While you may be happy to be in a "diverse" neighborhood, the people who've been here for years may not be so happy to have you here....My advice is to be very careful of your surroundings and realize that getting attacked is one of the drawbacks of living in the 'hood. Thank God you're okay....

File a report!

You should absolutely file a report. Thats sounds like a serious assault

its in crown heights. back in the early 90's i remember this black kid got chased into a high way back in bensonhurt he died. and that was racist and this is too. I used to get chased too in bensonhurts. i hate growing up in working class areas. -
Im so glad that you are ok. I agree you should file a report. I was told this a long long time ago when I was pickpocketed. They took all my cash and I had nothing left to live on for the week. A police officer friend told me to file a report because I then become a "victim with a file number" and was entitled to apply to Victim Services for some cash to hold me over until I got paid again. Im not sure if this is still how it works (I was given this info about 15 years ago) but I do know that Vicitim Services is still around.

yeah like everyone says file report.

Subject: Re: Assault
To answer your questions, the officers didn't think I should file a report, because I couldn't give a very distinctive and definitive description of the guy that hit me. They seemed to think that the only chance of catching him would have been during our drive around the area. I hope I'd be able to identify him, if I saw him again, but I can't be certain, which is a real source of frustration for me.
As for the questions about my race, I am a pale white guy and I assume this may have had something to do with the incident. I'm ussually somewhat on-gaurd late at night, but I'm not sure what I should have done differently in this case. If I immediately ran every time I felt minorly threatened, I'd be well prepared for a marathon by now. -

The guy committed a violent crime and probably should have been arrested. -

You should still file a report so that it goes into neighborhood crime stats!

seriously. you can't just go around punching people cause you don't want them around. that's totally absurd. -

While you are stating the obivious, that's totally lame. No justification WHAT SO EVER, none.
You're saying that black people can beat on white people bacause they were living in the hood longer... LAME. Bring Ratner to PH/ CH! Then they'll see being forced out. I'll bet 95% of the kids starting trouble don't know about any of that, they're just "exercising" thier right to beat up white people. Lame. Beyond Lame. -
your description sounded pretty detailed to me. did you see his face? i think sometimes people can make an identification, even with a quick glimpse.

i hope darwin takes care of those punks that did this or economics and statistics would eventually.

I never said the assault was "right," but it seems like some people (not all) are wondering why Fury was assaulted. And don't assume that people in the neighborhood don't know about Ratner's plan...What an elitist and stupid thing to assume. Take a minute to talk to a few kids on the block and you'll quickly realize that they do know what's going on around them. And while I don't condone violence, I certainly do believe they have a right to be angry. They're being pushed out of their neighborhood and their not happy about it. I'd be pissed to. The only solution to this is to creat affordable housing for everyone...neighborhood posses aren't going to cut it... -

And I hate to be the one to break it to you guys, but even if a police report is filed, the police WILL NEVER search for the assailants. The attitude within law enforcement circles is that you guys bring this upon yourselves for moving into predominantly low-income neighborhoods. Again, I'm not saying its right, and some of you may not like what I'm saying, but this is essentially, "the cost of doing business." Everytime they assault a white person, its kinda like getting back at the oppressor. Sad, but so, so true. -

nobody pushes anybody out of any area. remember alot of the landlords are black. they are happy to sell that house to whomever can afford it, so ummm yeah how can they be pushed out? do people force people to sell? i doubt it. this reminds me of the 80's when i got beatup by working class kids. cause my parents were stealing their jobs. and i'm not even japanese! anyway thats just an excuse to be racist nothing more.

RBG,
Angry, ok.
Violence, no way, no way.
It's their neighbors who are selling them out..
Do they get "open season" to beat up on them?
No justification.
White people didn't get to beat on other wealthier white, and black, and other people that have raised Manhattan rents and forced them into other hoods. It's economics, simple, the kids just suck and now white people seem like easy targets. My neighbors ( who own their place ) love us being here. My point, NO JUSTIFICATION, they should learn that that's real life. Hey, I rent, and in 5 years if I'm here, I'll have to move but I won't beat anyone up because of it. -

does that mean we should have a march through a black area demanding justice?
. I wonder al sharpton is avaible for this. -

The police are used to not bothering to do their job and ignoring black-on-black crime. People who used to live here may not have turned to the police because they didn't trust them (perhaps rightly so, especially under the Giuliani regime). The police resent middle class whites who move to low-income neighborhoods, because they have a greater sense of entitlement about their safety and expect police to enforce the law. Whatever else you think about it, making the police do some policework is one positive thing that gentrification brings to the community. -

anyway with joking aside, its just wrong, doesnt matter if they are white or black, purple etc... to blame other people for their own problems. people moving into the hood arent rich folks either. hell if i could afford ps
i would move there. obviously i cant so i moved to ph

Actually Armchair, many of the landlords of the larger (rental) buildings are not black, but in fact, they're jewish. As you probably know, they purchase these buildings in the 80's when the nabe was crackridden. Many of them purchased the apartments for as little as $1000 a piece---Many of the buildings were in foreclosure, abandoned, and the mortgage holders had defaulted on loans....During the 80's and most of the 90's, the landlords rented the apartments to low-income folks and basically took checks from the government (section 8) and left the buildings in disrepair...St. Johns between Underhill and Washington is a perfect example of this. Slowly, as the economy picked up and PH became desireable, the landlords started selling the buildings, selling their apartments in co-op conversions, and right now, many are no longer re-newing leases to longtime residents....I'm speaking strictly in rental terms....So, to use the tired argument of "most of the people who sold are black," is a tired argument. The disenfranchised folks I'm talking about never owned property in the nabe---these are people who are being pushed out because they their apartment buildings are being sold or their leases aren't being renewed... On my block alone, there are 3 buildings in which owners are not renewing leases and just a few days ago a FOR SALE sign went up on a Section-8 building...You should be happy that only a few people have been assaulted...People are not going to take this sitting down and they shouldn't have too...

I feel oppressed by by choices as far as safety in my hood, I'm going on a shooting spree because I read here that the cops ignore crime if your fighting against oppression. RBG, You should read Devincf's signature that Quijibo wrote, about CH kids. Funniest thing I've ever read, but you might agree with it.

the homes though are own mostly by black people. anyway yeah i do know about the larger rentals apartment buildings are mostly own by jewish people. and still is, but white people who do move into the area buy homes or rent. the homes they buy profits are made by the black landlords.
