new bar opening soon in park slope...

If you're going to fight, could you at least do it over me? Like about how cute I am, how awesome I am. Maybe you could try to outdo each other by buying me gifts. This would be nice.

Personally, fuck an English bar. They've been oppressing my people for years! I am not adverse to bars, just English ones.
-
^^ just wait till the next happy hour, I'll 'oppress' you good!
-
sorry...i don't want to fight with anyone...just wanted to throw some actual facts into the mix here. singletons far outnumber those with kids in park slope (contrary to popular belief) so it really doesn't seem outrageous to me that we're getting a couple new bars, that's all.
everyone is entitled to their opinions...i just prefer that people base those opinions more on facts than on perception. -
Wait...does this mean I don't get any gifts? Fucking hell.
-
I know I shouldn't ask this, but, where did you get those facts? i am always curious about good sites to look things like that up, thanks!!

http://homes.point2.com/Neighborhood/US/New-York/New-York-City/Brooklyn/Park-Slope-Demographics.aspx
you can choose any zip code by clicking on it to check the area you want...
they also have info of this type on www.propertyshark.com
just type in your address and scroll down and there will be a variety of different facts on demographics for that zip code... -
Hmm,. interesting, the info on my building on property shark is not correct. for example, it says my building was built in 1940, which is not true. This building was built in the 1890's, there was a renovation done in the 1940s where some of the apartments were converted. But, the building has been standing since the 1890's.
-
yes, oftentimes those stats on property shark are a bit off for some reason....i think my building is off by about 20 years or so also...
i wonder if there's a way to update it...hmm -

Ha! You're can get one beer for $10 - very rare to get 2 (unless it's happy hour).
We did not have pints but plain old beer glasses. Probably held 10-12oz. Get ready for this. When a glass of beer went from 5 cents to 10 cents there was an uproar. People predicted the bars would go out of nusiness! Needless to say that did not happen. One thing the bar owners did that made things a little less painful was buy you back a drink (hard liquor or beer) after the 3rd or 4th drink. I remember going into a bar on 14th st in Manhatten near where I worked. I put a $10 bill on the bar. It was a beer only bar. No Liquor. The bartender said "I hope you are not going to spend that all here!!!

How much were you making a week when $10 could get you drunk?
Some bars still "buy back" every 3rd or 4th drink, but many others don't. I personally think it's good business (and I've been a bartender before). -
^^ Flexi he did say back in his day a pint was 10 cents.

No offense taken, just don't like hypocrites. Ya know, those who complain about people b*tching on threads while they do the same. I stand by my comments about bars and kids even if the data is correct about more households with kids versus without.
sorry to have offended you.
btw, here are the stats for park slope in terms of the "stroller infested ps" you speak of. looks to me as though there are more of us without children than those with kids in the neighborhood, but who cares about facts...right?

You mean when people complain about the decor without actually trying the food in a restaurant?

Damn Orangemen! -
i did try the restaurant, egg...i mentioned that above. i really wanted to like the place. i had heard some really nice things here about it when it first opened, as you said. i love it when small businesses succeed, but i also don't relish the thought of having another mediocre italian place stick around if it's not doing well. my experience at primmo atto was not one i would have wanted to repeat sadly. hope whatever comes in next does better.

I'll go if you wear a kilt. -
My 10 y/o nephew came in 5th at the World Irish Dancing contest for his age ....
Bagpipes and kilts are not a problem.
...bring it. -

well, if you wear the 10 year old's kilt, we'll be sure to know whether you are wearing anything underneath

Hopefully my final comment on this. Be that as it may, my point was you accused LTS of doing the same thing you did in the Primo Atto thread. Also, your quote above "differences of opinion are what make the world go round" is also hypocritical as again LTS was sharing her thoughts on Bars in the neighborhood.
Well, sadly for you rumor has it they are re-opening according to a poster on the Is Primo Atto closing thread. -
i hope they do reopen...empty storefronts suck. perhaps this time they'll improve enough to last this next time around.
do you ever say anything nice, eggcream? -
Mamacita wrote: ^^ Flexi he did say back in his day a pint was 10 cents.
What I said was draft beer came in 10-12oz glasses, not pints. Yes I said 10 cents. That was after they raised it from a NICKLE! To answer the other question about getting drunk on $10. When I drank beer there is NO WAY I could have drunk $10 worth. When I drank 7 & 7 it was 40 cents a drink. Even with the 7 & 7 $10 would be tough to spend. I am going to guess that I was making about $70 a week when beer was a dime.
-
My father used to drink 7&7 - he always called them Thirteens. As I've noted before, my father is a weirdo.
-
So, the beer to pay ratio was $70 / .1
Meaning, if one spent all of their money on beer, one could purchase 700 beers a week.
At today's prices ($6 a beer), one would have to be earning $4200 a week to purchase 700 beers.
...since not many of us are earning that, the rest of us are likely jealous. -
The cheapest I remember is 35 cents a glass. 10 ounces if not less.
-

$2625/week, if you adjust for the 10 oz vs 16 oz serving size (and assuming you drink at a place that serves real pints).

True enough. We must also inquire as to the nature of these establishments.
Old Goat, were these dingy "drinkers bars" (Hanks comes to mind) or places where you have a chance of meeting a member of the opposite sex with all of their teeth intact?
At Hanks, a beer is still only $3 ...so you'd have to earn only $1800 a week.
Sepia runs $6. -
whynot 31, the bars were not dingy but they were drinkers bars. The only women I ever met in Murphy's was my Aunt and yes she had teeth. The bars were places to go to on an evening when you had no other social events planned. For me that turned out to be Friday nights. Also if you make $1800 a month you are doing okay. I live on a Postal Pension and a small (And I mean small) social security check) I am not complaining. My bills are paid, have decent health insurance and still have enough after necessities to have 1 or 2 drinks a day. My wife is a tea totler so that helps!

Old Goat -
good for you. our math above concluded that with your earnings at the time, you could have purchased 700 beers a week (if you chose to buy nothing else) for your $70 weekly wage.
Today, we'd have to earn $1800 a week to buy 700 beers. ...which not many of us do.
P.S. We're are glad somebody is enjoying social security; its not going to be around much longer. -
Wait, Whynot, are you saying not many of us earn $1800 a week, or not many of us buy 700 beers?
Let's be specific here!
-
$3 Hanks' beer only yields 600 beers for $1800. excluding buy backs.
Howdy, Stranger!
