yeah, people were sitting in there and everything.

i'm thinking i'll have to go saturday AM.
  • I'll head over sometime this morn and report back...

I'm going on my way home from work this afternoon.
  • The place really looks great. Nice balance - comfy, not too cluttered, not too sparse. Counters and display cases get a thumbs up, as does the view in to the kitchen area.

Selection was a little thin, but it's the first day. Nice mix though - from work-a-day (chocolate chip cookies), upscale (fresh raspberry torte of some kind) and stuff in between (cherry brownies). My red velvet cupcake - great. Love the frosting, light and not-too-sweet cream cheese. Chocolate chip (chunk?) cookie was good, too - hearty and best enjoyed with milk, but not so dry as to make it necessary - not the crunchy, brittle type.

Would have liked to try an espresso, but I had to be on my way - maybe around lunchtime. :D

    Pernil followed by dessert?!
  • I'm going right now. I'll keep everyone posted.
  • Whoa?! Not waiting for me?! :?
  • Ok so I went and I've returned. Good things, good things.

Let me start by admitting that I'm a bit of a nervous consumer, and generally when I go into someplace for the first time and the people behind the counter are staring at me waiting for me to order, I panic and just point at random things that seem safe for fear of seeming like I've never been there before. I realize that this is a particularly hilarious thing to do on the first day the place is open, but, well, it's what I did.

I ended up nervously opting for an Iced Vanilla Latte and what was called a "regular muffin," even though there were way more interesting and exciting looking things behind the counter, but I wasn't entirely sure what those were and I didn't want to, god forbid, ask the staff to clarify. Anyway, it turns out that "regular" means "corn" at Joyce, which is cool with me. The muffin ($2) was larger than it looked and definitely delicious.

It was nice and moist in terms of corn muffins, but that's still a tiny bit dry. I really could have used some butter or jelly or both atop it, but, again, I'm too much of a f#cking mary to just ask the people who work at the bake shop if that's something they do. Still, the corn muffin was really good - very tasty.

The latte ($3.25) was similarly delicious - well proportioned, just sweet enough, tasty espresso, everything. Plus it's about a dollar cheaper than a similarly sized vanilla latte from Muddy Waters. Indeed, though I have had nothing but pleasant experiences at the controversial MW, I fear that Joyce will either run it out or, ideally, inspire a cross-Vanderbilt pricing war.

Joyce was really nice inside and they managed to put a lot of seating in there without making it look or feel cramped at all. Plus, it was swarming with young women. Obviously that doesn't matter to me - I have enough trouble ordering a tart in a bakery, no way I'm going to try to pick one up.

    Har har har!
  • went there this morning. had a scone. it was very good. had a coffee, it was good too. next time will get a cupcake.

like the window seating. nice photography & overall aesthetic.

so far, so good. wonder what kind of day MW had.
  • Subject: Great potential

I am the luckiest bastard ever. I volunteered at work yesterday to pick up pastry for a colleague's birthday today. I thought to myself, "Well, this is gonna be a wild goose chase – unless, by some miracle, that Joyce place is finally open."

Walking home from the subway yesterday, I saw lights on in Joyce's back room, with worker bees fluttering around near the ovens. No...it couldn't actually be happening....

But it was! On the very day I needed it! I showed up at a few minutes after 10 (I always straggle into work late) and bought what I think were their first for-sale cupcakes ever. I was not, however, their first customer by a long shot, as the place had been open since 7, and there were already three or four coffee drinkers manning the tables.

The cupcakes were a big hit at work. I bought five red velvet with cream cheese frosting and four angel food with chocolate frosting. The cupcakes were tasty – not Magnolia, "kill me now" amazing, but more than adequate. And you can't beat the location. I would like to see them come up with a pricing incentive for buying a box; the cupcakes were $2 each, which made my full box of nine cupcakes...well, $18. But since I was buying a large chunk of their initial cupcake stock – I think they only had, like, 20 out in total – I can understand them making me pay full markup. I was so thrilled to have my problem solved that I didn't mind.

If they add fresh-baked bread, cookies, and a larger breakfast and lunch selection, I agree with everyone here that Muddy Waters is toast.
  • Had a chocolate cupcake with marshmallow frosting... good. Very good. Diggin' the frostings so far.

Whaddaya think, Carni? I hear that my better half saw you and Mrs C there! Do tell!
  • y'all are making me hungry! I want a cupcake!
  • alafairnadia wrote: y'all are making me hungry! I want a cupcake!
They're on the small side - have 2.
  • gorilla coffee... mmm
lemon tart... mmm (got the last one for today)

also wanted (but did not get): red velvet cupcake, chocolate cupcake w/ marshmallow frosting, brownie, macaroon.

i like the small/normal portion size. i don't want a softball size muffin or cupcake.

one of the guys said they've been busy and have had a warm reception.

    oh and free wi-fi!
  • hahaha! well written

  • The coffee, yellow cupcake with chocolate frosting, and red velvet cupcake were all deelish, the atmosphere is great, the staff is friendly...

This is what we've needed around here for a long time. I plan to be there a lot.

The other coffee places around here will be dead in the (muddy) water. :-({|=
  • When does Joyce close? Is it a morning/afternoon joint, or can hubby and I swing by for something sweet after dinner tonight? I made a quick walk through today, and I was SOOOO pleased. Exactly what I was hoping for.
  • Went before I opened the shop today, and I am impressed. I had a red velvet cupcake, in my opinion it's tastier than Cakeman's, sorry! The cake itself is tastier, and the icing is not too sweet, but just right. Also, I really, REALLY like that they're not as big as your head, you can enjoy one or two without guilt or a stomachache. Coffee was excellent. I met the charming Joyce herself! I will be frequenting this bakery numerous times a week.

Atmosphere and decor are very, very comfortable. Congrats to them! This is a valuable addition to Vanderbilt!
  • vanilla wrote: i actually just emailed them hoping for atleast one type of vegan cupcake or muffin... wow, with gorilla coffee?! that would totally rule...
Hey, Heights Coffee has had vegan muffins lately and they aren't half bad!
  • I picked up a mocha and a lemon blueberry scone this morning. um. yum. first of all, I've never had a scone that didn't double as a doorstop, so a buttery, flaky scone is pretty wonderous in my opinion. it's also not sweet at all, and just hinting at lemon (not a punch to the face) - totally yummy. the mocha was also very good - perfectly blended and not chalky at all like the MW version. they use the same mocha syrup as Half did (the Ghiradelli brand) but are much better than most Half baristas were at actually mixing the stuff into the drink for proper flavor distribution.

oh. and I also have a cookie and a cupcake for snacks later on today. will report back regarding those. yes, I'm a piglet. deal with it.
  • I'm totally addicted to the place already. I'm going back now for some coffee, scones and wifi! =P~
  • I can see myself getting addicted too!
We had the vanilla cupcake with chocolate frosting and the brownie. Both were fantastic!!
  • Carnivore wrote: I'm totally addicted to the place already. I'm going back now fo some coffee, scones and wifi! =P~
I'm so jealous. I wanted to sit down and drink my coffee and eat my scone there, but I was already running late for the train. le sigh.

ooh, and I saw the t-shirts. I totally almost bought one but thought I stop myself before I went off the deep end.
  • Oh, I hear the company's fine over in the deep end... ;)
  • EmilyM wrote: Oh, I hear the company's fine over in the deep end... ;)
The shirts are soft and comfortable. And I agree, the scones are delicious! I got cranberry raisin.
  • EmilyM wrote: Oh, I hear the company's fine over in the deep end... ;)
heh. well. I already am a permanent resident of the deep end.

I do wish, though, more local businesses had t-shirts. if I could, I'd own a Soda shirt, an Indigo shirt, a Natural Heights shirt ...
    I'm such a dork.

Darling, Soda should have an honorary stool just for you ;)
