Knit Your Ass Off This Winter!
Hey folks. Here's some info on knitting circles that I'm hosting this season fall/winter 2006. These are not instructional circles, these are friendly forums for people that knit and crochet. For those in the know, same locations and schedule as last year. For those who know not...
KNIT NIGHT AT FREDDY'S
No more knit nights in 2007, conflict with my Sunday teaching schedule. Of course, if someone with more energy wants to host it, I have the tools to loan.
Until then Bill C and I bring you the Sing-and-Win A Ham Contest every third Wednesday of the month at Freddy's. Knitting not required.
Freddy's Bar and Backroom
485 Dean Street (6AV+Dean St.)
Brooklyn, NY 11217
(718) 622-7035
KNIT AT PERK
Right on the border Park Slope and Propect Heights where hipsters and hippies collide with double-wide strollers, this night is great for people getting off from work and want to escape the kids for a while. It's right between the 7th AV Q and the 2/3 GAP stops. Pastries are half price after 5:00 pm. Try a Pete's chili chocolate cookie.
Every second and fourth Wednesday of the month
From 7:00 to 9:00 pm
Starting October 11 and 25, 2006
Prospect Perk Cafe
183 Sterling (Flatbush+Sterling Pl)
Brooklyn NY, 11238
(718) 398-2760
KNIT AT MAHA'S CAFE
Somehow this became the defacto men's circle. Go figure. But all are welcomed. Maha makes wonderful Middle Eartern, Mediterranean and vegertian food. I really like her home-made falafel, it tastes just like chicken! It's a cozy, warm and friendly place right off the Bergen 2/3 stop and near the 78th Precinct. Getting there is easier than getting arrested!
Every first and third Thursday of the month
From 7:00 to 9:00
Starting October 5 and 19, 2006
MAHA'S CAFE
69 Sixth AV (6AV between Bergen + St. Marks)
Brooklyn, NY 11217

Maybe this will be the winter I finish the other sock...
-
I voted on behalf of my better half.
I'm looking forward to getting started knitting again. Took a hiatus to draw cause I'm not too much a multi tasker on that front.
Thanks for getting it started again at Freddy's! -
I've never knitted, but I liked knitted things... hey, maybe that could be a response option in your poll.
-
Thanks KW, I'll see ou around before then. Tell DM hello.
EmilyM, do you need to borrow the swift and winder before September 24? I can just loan it to you before hand. -
Okay, YAY for the Gromit icon! Yay, yay, YAY!

Can crocheters come too?

Subject: Sure, Why Knot.
blksafyre wrote: Can crocheters come too?
blksafyre, I've consulted with a few key members and answer is "yes" as long as you don't bring any of those creepy half-doll half-skirt toilet paper cozy projects. Although the Pompom Poodle crochetted over a wine bottle is pretty cool.
You meant the knitting circles and not the CHIPS hat clinic, right? -

no toilet paper dolls. I promise.
And yes I was referring to the knitting circles. -
Excellent. Bring on the hookers.

I started knitting my man a sweater but discovered it was more cost efficient to buy one at the Gap. Yarn is expensive!

Yavel wrote: I started knitting my man a sweater but discovered it was more cost efficient to buy one at the Gap. Yarn is expensive!
For shame, Yavel, this is true. Yarn can get pricey. If you're like me (cheap) you might want to check on End of Summer yarn sales. Last year's wool has to go! Calculate the yardage for your sweater or buy as many skeens as you can. Inquire at your favorite yarn shop or do one of the following.
1) Rip out an old sweater, join broken yarn, skeen it, wash it , dry it, swift it and ball it. This is great for people in their 20s who plan to wear that sweater in their mid-30s. Plan ahead!
2) NY Craft Council is sponsoring the 8th annual KNIT OUT in Union Square this coming Sunday, September 17th, 2006 from noon to 5 p.m.
Step One: Knock out the person in the Lion Brand lion costume. Wear it.
Step Two: Walk around with a large bag, smiling and gesturing for people to give you their yarn. Do a little dance when they hand over their yarn and wave.
Step Three: By the time the real Lion Brand lion comes to, you will have caught the 4, 5, N, R, L, or Q back to Brooklyn, laughing all the way home.
Option: If you can obtain a fire arm, hold the Lion Brand lion captive and demand that everyone leave the yarn in unmarked bags in the get-away limo. You'll make the news!
3) Get hip to Simley's famous yarn sale. They have everything and I mean everything on the planet. It's a bit like a Star Trek convention for yarnies. Sign on to their newsletter and set you Trio calendar. Get there at 5:00 am and bring a lunch.
4) Buy a sweater at Marshals and carefully cut the tag out. Put it through a cold wash for that magic realism and add some of your favorite touches: I-chords, raised lettering, maybe a button ot two. Tell people you made it. -

Option #6: I saw a wallet knitted from a FedEx envelope once
or is that knatted? :-k -

¿Treo? Ay tonto! La palabra incorrecto. WhyFi, are you going to Return of the Spelling Bee at Freddy's? It's nerve-racking fun, hosted by Heather "H-bomb" McCabe on Monday evening September 11 (yikes), at 8:00 pm sharp. Seriously, you might win valuable prizes or cash money. I've never won personally.Option #6: I saw a wallet knitted from a FedEx envelope once
Quijibo, do you have a pic of that FedEx wallet? Sounds like a prison craft to me. Hmmm.
or is that knatted?
Ask-Answer Forum:Use of the root word "Knit"
If used as a past participle (perfect participle) to modify a subject or object, you can say "The knitted wallet and toothbrush knife were prison crafts." If used as a verb you can say "It was knit at Rikers." or "I knitted this wallet while on parole."
I like "knatted" as past tense of knit. Sounds British. Should we just use it among ourselves until it catches on? -
ok. in hindsight. t wasn't knit. but rather, cut, fold, stapled.

i prefer knatted... -
Looks like you made that one, didn't you. Look at the Metrocard holder that I made from Metrocards.

Light-weight and Metrosexual. Clever, no? Do want the instructions? Your friends will be jeaulous. -

Monday Night Football - Vikings/Redskins and I'm a Minnesotan, donchaknow? But let me know when they have a spelling bee limited to words associated with gizmos, gadgets and doo-dads. -

KNIT NIGHT AT FREDDY'S
Sunday, September 24, 2006

This coming Sunday, get your yarn in shape for winter. At this monthly circle, tools of the trade are made available: swifts, winders, needle gauges and more. Thanks Yarn Guy for organizing these events. I'm looking forward to getting back in the knitting saddle again. -
Subject: SING! and win mediocre prizes...

This camera is really working out for me. If you're not doing anything this Wednesday evening, BillC and I are hosting the Low-fi Karaoke night. You might be eligible to win a Krakus canned ham, an Austin Powers or a Dr. Evil action figure (see above). I'm closing down my storage space, you might eventually win a Xante tabloid laser printer, a plush talking Cartman doll, Beavis and Buthead toilet paper, or a Street.com golf umbrella/lighting catcher.
Sing-and-Win-Mediocre-Prizes Night
at Freddy's (485 Dean Street)
Wednesday, Sept, 20 from 9:00 until 12:30.

If you're too shy to sing alone you can join the big Bohemian ending, that's when the entire room gets up on stage and sings. Drink optional, knitting encouraged. -
Subject: YARN X CHANGE

Still hoping that last hank will magically turn into a hat?
If you're coming on Sunday, make this a yarn exchange opportunity. If you still haven't used it in year or two, its time to let someone else enjoy your stash. -
What's the least crowded of the knitting circles? I hate showing up somewhere and there's nowhere to sit. Working on these right now: http://knitty.com/ISSUEsummer06/PATTknucks.html

Hey Erikka, nice fingerless gloves. Space is relative in context to time, according to Steven Hawking. According to King Taufa'ahau Tupou IV of Tonga "my relatives take up a lot of space at times." Oh, those Tonganese.
Well, Freddy's has a lot of space and tables. If you get there early enough you can protect your area with a firearm or a fort made from other chairs. Generally, Prospect Perk is the less crowded, it's usually just five or six of us waiting for someone to leave so we can talk about them. That's on Sterling and Flatbush starting on October 11 and 25, but I think you want your gloves made ASAP. -

KNIT AT MAHA'S CAFE
In October, the informal men's knitting group meets again. All are welcomed, even the crocheters. Last fall one diner was quoted as saying "Stop it you FREAKS! This is wrong!". Maybe she was right, but why should we stop. Knosh and knit at Maha's. It's a cozy, warm and friendly place right off the Bergen 2/3 stop near the 78th Precinct. Getting there is easier than getting arrested!

Subject: Maha's this Thursday, October 5th
Hello yarn people,
A small adjust ment for those who are going to Maha's this Thursday, October 5th. We are meeting from 7:00 until 9:00. Maha's closes at 9:30. I noticed it's Old Time Jam at Freddy's that evening. If your into music that's only played in G on a banjo and Burning Man reunions, hobble across the street into Freddy's backroom at around 9:30.
Some people have asked if this is a teaching circle. Unfortunately, no it's not. But on the other hand, if you wanted to bring a friend along to teach you, it's a good place to do that. If people want I can recomend a few places that teach knitting.
Following the recent trend of renaming already-inhabited Brooklyn neighborhoods, Maha's area should be called FALAFL, or the Funky Area Looming Above Flatbush.
Hope to see you there. -
Hey Knitties, help please. I'm looking for size #0000 double pointed needles (that's 1.25mm). I went around to yarn stores today in the city to no avail. Any advise? Thanks!

I found some size #1's at Purl Soho this afternoon. I saw a set of #0's there. Is "0" the same as "0000"? <joke> If not, is size 0000 visible to the naked eye </joke>? -
I can only imagine how fragile the #0000 might be... One sales lady at a yarn store on 39th laughed at me and told me "maybe they made those a long time ago, but not anymore"...

The pattern I have is so pretty - for a lacey patterened bracelet/ wrist cuff that had seed beads knitted on.
I think I'll check School Products tomorrow. -
em, wow - maybe try using toothpicks? It's a funny image to picture someone knitting with toothpicks, haha, but hey, it could work.
Or are toothpicks too big, even?!
