Or are toothpicks too big, even?!
Ahh, yes. The elusive quadruple zeros. Much like Big Foot, the Loch Ness Monster, and Paris Hilton's other not-so-slutty sister, we question if they if fact exist. I own a set of triple zeros, I bought them at School Products on 28th street and Broadway. I've never openned the package for fear of stabbing myself in the eye.

A tooth pick (round, with the cellophane thing at the end) gauges at American size #1 (2.5mm). A jumbo size paper clip, when straightened out, measures at a mere #00. Angel hair pasta (capelli agnelli) gauges in at #000.

Do these micro-craft tools actually exist?
    Possibly, hmmm... possibly

Who where these people and how small were they?
I speculate that they stood (or sat) about 11 inches high and they were aliens, of course. They are most likely blind, yet adept, from years of using such microscopic tools.

Where were they from? Where have they gone?
    No one knows. Discuss.

i will confirm from personal observation that knitting on toothpicks does work. it's crazy-town, but it works.

also, TYG, the cellophane-tipped sort of toothpick is pretty husky -- what size would a regular toothpick, the kind for, you know, picking your teeth, be?

    In US sizes

    A. Angelhair pasta = #0, breaks a lot, but great with olives and capers

    B. Toothpick with cello-fringe = #1, good for making glove fingers or leg warmers for a mouse (the 80's are coming back).

    C. BBQ Skewer = #2, kinda "stabby", knit with care

    D. Rounded chopsticks = US #8, FAA approved

    E. No. 2B pencil = #10.75, also FAA approved, good for making notes while knitting

    F. Dowel from pants hanger = #14, chuuuunky

Back to the #0000 topic, I know a Russian woman who said her grandmother knitted fine lace on needles she made from piano wire. What key, I know not. So, where can one jack a piano for it's strings?
  • That Yarn Guy wrote: So, where can one jack a piano for it's strings?
    BAM.

just lurk outside the stage door and mug one after a late concert.

pianos let their guard down after mozart especially.
  • Hmmmmm, that might be something of which legal council would disapprove. I'll try dissebling an umbrella.
  • After finding the #0000 needles at School Products - I have yet to start the knitting portion of the project. It's already a headache. I transfered the 1500 seed beads onto the "yarn" I'm using (thread), resulting is massive knots and lots of screaming.

...so, mini-knitting is on hold, and easy boyfriend scarf is making good progress.

    Hey Nomad,

Knit Night at Freddy's wil be on Sunday, October 29 from 6:30 until 8:30 pm. Then a bunch of poets kick us out. Where is this world heading to? I bought a small yardage counter to work out a Fairisle vest. Does anyone have one of those lint shaver gadgets? I got some hairy sweaters.

Jus throwing this out there, I was thinking of brining some kind of book on CD. Suggestions?
  • I'm planning on coming to the knit night at Freddy's. I can bring my sweater shaver.
  • Ok-dokes, I'll be there!

Thanks EM, I look forward to shearing my sweaters. I ruined my good electric shaver trying to hone down the fuzz. You figure if science can alter grain into super Monsanto Corn there would have been a non-pilling sheep by now. no?

In my online gleanings I have to say I've never seen anything quite like this. Hold on to your stomach people! This pattern is called "Thong-th-thong".

  • Hm. I thought the Knitta, Please link was interesting, but my first instinct was, "You know, there are people out there who are cold." Now, I don't want to start a debate on art vs. function (well maybe I do, a little bit) but I wonder if there was ever a homeless person in the dead of winter freezing and looking up a lovingly swathed telephone pole.
  • Oh, I hate it when knitting goes political. But here's my two cents. Comparing art to practical usage is more like comparing wool to acrylic: It's just not the same. "Arts and Crafts" is a misnamed department.

I met crochet artist Zenobia Bailey last year, she is phenominal. Here's a bit more on her work:
    http://www.craftsreport.com/january03/profile.html
She showed a crochetted wedding yurt that floated above a sun-shaped rug that was about 12' in diameter.

Hmmmmm. I think homless people have more on their minds than sweaters on trees. "Where do I sleep tonight?" is a much bigger question.

Topic: Tree Muff Vs. Dog Sweater
Just as one might ask if we need the art of Jeff Koons, I ask if dogs really need sweaters? But they are so darn cute. And the dogs look so happy.

Alice Fixx from Craft Yarn Council is looking for retro knit or crochet for a TIMES article. If you have anything to contribute please PM or e-mail me. [email protected]. She's pretty cool. I call her the Yarn Whipserer.

    She writes:
"Have any members of your group knitted or crocheted retro things for the home (i.e. not fashion stuff)....things like granny square afghans, shag pillows or throws, Marimekko patterned stuff? You get the idea. If a few have done so (or will do so quickly) I may be able to get the TIMES to do a story."

Has anyone ever made one of those half-doll half toilet paper cozy creatures?

  • Yarn Guy, I'm kind of curious, will I be shunned from public knitting if I walk in with my big blanket I'm knitting on circular nedles with Lion Brand Wool-Ease? Will I have to remove all the wrappers and wind it into balls to disguise my fiber's humble origins? Will you be able to smell the synthetic blend anyway? Should I bring a posh cashmerino sock to work on to save face?

Oh I doubt, it. Public stoning is so biblical-times. I think acrylic has become more of a class issue than it is material preference, similar to soft white bread vs. whole grain wheat bread. For people going through chemo, a high quality acrylic is perfect, very non-reactive. A freind who went through cancer treatment said she liked the fun fur because it didn't really touch her head and it kept her warm (at HOME).

Lion Brand has become somewhat respectable. I actually like Wool Ease Bulky, it's 50 wool and 50 acrylic. It's much lighter than 100% wool bulky. But if you smoke, look out!

  • Subject: Knit for a cause!

my little knitting circle at work is knitting for a cause. We are doing these blue squares to be part of a knitted petition for WaterAid. It's a good cause and a great way to use up the end of a skeen of yarn, test a stitch, etc. Here's the link:

    http://www.wateraid.org/uk/get_involved/campaigns/take_action_now/help_save_lives_help_knit_a_river/default.asp

There are many, many more knit based charities featured in the book Knitting for Peace, but the WaterAid one is SO FAST and SO EASY it's hard to say "no".
  • I like it when people use knitting for good instead of evil (the "thong" link, ewwwww). Good project EM, and someone is giving me their mother's "intervention" bag of wool (she's no long allowed to buy). I'm sure there's blue in there. Will you be collecting these EM?
