Knit Your Ass Off This Winter!

I'm sure there's blue in there. Will you be collecting these EM?
Yep! I can collect the squares and send them all together. I keep trying to make it to the knit nights... ...but we have a while. I estimate that I'll send the squares off in Jan. or Feb. so get knitting!
Intervention bag of wool!? That sounds like a score! I may need an intervention soon, but for now I like my weekly trips to the yarn store. -

NO KNIT AT PERK
For religious reasons there will be no KNIT AT PERK this Wednesday as we prepre for the holiest of holidays. No, not Burning Man, but pre-Thanksgiving four-day weekend. On this day we join friends and family (unless you're a big loser) to remember that a Turkey had given its life up to save us from ourselves. Cheers and Happy Thanksgiving everyone. -
Subject: favorite yarn stores
What are your favorite yarn stores in the city (Brooklyn or Manhattan). I'm looking for some middle ground between $25 skeins of cashmere and $2 acrylic.
I try to frequent School Products, but it's rather out of the way...
I am unsatisfied with the garment district selection (no thanks on the 1 pound ball of florescent orange Red Heart from Daytona Trimmings)...
I stumbled upon Brooklyn General on Union Street by the Columbia Waterfront/ Red Hook and LOVE IT... but getting back over there is impossible.
I need lots of yarn before a long family weekend. -

Pssst. EM, check your message box. -
Have you tried Knit-a-Way on Atlantic Ave? Lots of middle-ground type of stuff there, but not the most helpful place I've been.
-
Subject: Reminder
Just a quick reminder. There is no Knit Night at Freddy's this Sunday. That was last week.
Also in yarn news, I just saw that Stitch Therapy (Lincoln near 7th) has a whole lot of Yak/Merino and Lambs Pride in the sale area for 30% off. Maxcine, owner, says she'll be putting some Debbie Bliss in the sale maybe next week. She's gotta make some room for all the new winter stock. Drop in for a look-see this weekend. -

Subject: Dying For A Change

Thanks EM, Simley's Yarn Sale is an event of note. Bring a cattle prod and a grabbing stick. But if you're tired of that same-old hat or scarf, try this trick for the holidays.
DYING WITH JELLO
1 package unsweetened Jello
1 gallon of water
1/2 CUP of vinegar
1/2 TSP of salt
A large pot for the stove
A light colored hat or scarf
Soak garment in soapy water, rinse and press out water in a towel. Bring water to a boil, dissolve Jello, add salt and vinegar. Remove from heat and place garment in making sure it is covered by the dye bath. For the microwave, make dye bath first then put garment in a large microwave bowl and cover. Microwave on high for 5 minutes. Do not agitate wool, it will felt (unless you're into that).
Cover and allow to sit out for at least 8 hours keeping garment submerged. Rinse well in cool water, gently squeeze out excess, dry flat.
NOTE: Also works with cotton, but not with linen. Dye skeins of yarn but keep them loosely wound. Colors are generally soft, but longer soaking results in deeper colors. Also works with Kool-aide. Does not work with Jello Pudding or Goya Instant Flan. Jello is not vegan friendly. -

This is the only knit night for December at Prospect Perk Cafe (where hipsters and hippies collide with double-wide strollers). Not a knitting class, but a freindly circle for people that knit. Crocheters welcomed. It's right between the 7th AV Q and the 2/3 GAP stops.

Subject: FREDDY'S KNIT NIGHT DATE CORRECTION
Helfe! Habe Iche meinen strickenden Kalendertag verloren?
Nein, es war einen Fehler.
There was a mistake on Freddy's printed December calendar. KNIT NIGHT @ FREDDY'S is on the Sunday DEC. 17 from 6:30 to 8:30, not the 10th, (dieses ist nicht das Datum).
¡Aufmerksamkeit! But do check out Strip Club on Sunday evening, Dec. 10. It's an evening of drawing and comic book art and so much more. Bring along your 20-sided di and art supplies!

General Announcement. No more Knit Night at Freddy's
We just got so out of hand the last time! Kidding. Actually, it conflcits with my Sunday teaching schedule in 2007. But if you need to borrow the swift or ball winder just ask me.sarajean8 wrote: Would you mind posting the list you sent to EM on this thread. I would also love to know your favorite places!
Hello sarajean8, my yarn shopping isn't that far and wide, but I do like these places:
- Knitpicks.com, good bang for your online buck, especially for their peruvian wool and alpaca.
- Stitch Therapy, a fine yarn shop on Lincoln Pl., lots of yarns for baby stuff. They have a brilliant, inspiring, new knitting instructor (me)!
- Knit A Way, a yarn emporium in the Bocorococaca area on Atlantic. Lots of brands and books, great sale area.
- School Products, good prices on cashmere, silk, merino, novelty yarns, they still support knitting machine repair and weaving tools. Great book selection.
- Purl, Soho, nice luxury yarn shop, so the next time you knock over a liquor store make this your next stop.
- Brooklyn Gerneral, on Union in Carol Gardens, nice concept store, very craft friendly classes for kids, a bit out of the way.
- The Yarn Tree, it's in Williamsburg so if you're over 30 make it fast before they report you to the age police. Run quickly!
- Habu, on W. 29th street, very exotic material like raw silk + stainless steel yarns, linen paper tape, hemp + wool, they've designed fibers for Issey Miyake. I buy his scraps from the sale bin.
- Knit New York, on east 14th street. I go there after my eye doctor appointments (I had this foreign object stuck in my eyeball and ooooo) It's best to shop before you go into pupil dialation.
- Downtown Yarns, also on east 14th street. I like.
- P and S Fabrics on Broadway, a fabric supply store with a good smattering of yarn, mostly acrylics, poly-wool blends and cottons. They have lots of knitting and sewing tools.
Don't forget Smiley's in Woodhaven. Got wheels?
But that's about it for me. Here's a link to The Crafty Bitch. I noticed that
Red Lipstick is on her list. Kudos SJE!
So where do you folks like to shop for yours? And why? Discuss. -

Did Downtown Yarns on Ave A move to 14th Street? Or is it just another shop with the same name? FWIW I love Downtown Yarns on Ave A-- very nice selection and they wrote up a pattern for me for something I wanted to make.
- Downtown Yarns, also on east 14th street. I like.
I actually find some good stuff on eBay sometimes. -
Yes, Downtown Yarns has moved to 45 Avenue A between 3rd and 4th Streets. Same stock new location open 12:00-7:00, Sun to Mon.
-
yarn tree, in w'burg, has fantastic hours for working stiffs - 5:30 p.m. to 10 p.m. during the week.

I have a question.
Anybody knit/crochet/embroider as a passenger on long car trips?
Reading would make me car sick, but as I wiled away the cross-country hours recently, it occurred to me that I needed craft-distraction.
thoughts? experiences? -
Subject: Open Road/Open Work scarf
I've got inner ear problems. I get motion sickness from reading in cars and small boats with the stopping and starting and such. That might explain my my aversion to Staten Island. But I've never been sick knitting on a train. I'd figure that if you can knit on the subway, LIRR or Metro North you might be fine. Try a simple project that will allow you to back seat drive, like a basket weave scarf or some open work.
Here's an easy open-work scarf that I did with the kids at the BBG.
Materials: #7 SPN, 190 yds of any medium weight yarn, strong coffee, road map, cell phone.
Step 1: Ask if anyone needs the bathroom, wave the map around, unfold and refold it a few times. Loosely Cast On 26 stitches, knit 8 odd and even rows to make a garter border.
Step 2: K3; K2tog, YO X 5; K3 repeat this pattern till you are out of yarn.
TIP: Take a few thought breaks to avoid that dizzy feeling. Every 10th row or so ask thigns like "What ever happenned to Bill?", make a few calls and say "Yeah, uh hmmm. We're on the way, need anything?". Smooth the map out and ask "You sure you know where you're going?". Talk about your last therapy session or maybe a friend's therapy session. Mumble "I own it".
Step 3: To match the CO garter border, unravel that last 10 rows carefully. Put loops back on the needle and garter the last 8 rows, Loosely bind-off. Sewn-off Binding wroks best.
If your strangled body (with your own 4 foot scarf) is not found by the road side you'll have a nice gift for someone. -
erm, I made a sock once, but I can't understand that crazy lingo you're spouting. K2tog? riiiight.
don't 'splain, I'm just not ready!
instead I'll be planning the surly sampler slogans to be rendered next trip . . . or recalling how to crochet a rose afghan square, perhaps in a lovely shade of tangerine . . .
and can you tell me why those blankets are called "afghans"? -
pitu wrote: can you tell me why those blankets are called "afghans"?
I would suspect that marketing is the culprit, no one would wear "soft giant dish towel". Give the open-work scarf a shot, it's impressive looking and you're only repeating one row. Socks are hard.
K2tog: Knit 2 together, insert the right needle into the second loop and first loop from the point of the left needle. Knit them together as you would one loop.
YO: Yarn over, carry the yarn from the back of you work "over" your right needle before you make the next stitch from the left needle.
Yeah I know this actually looks easier that it reads. Try these sites: Knittinghelp.com, Vogue Knitting. Good luck. -

War games, I understand! -
I wonder if there is pocket Karaoke for car trips. I bet they do in Japan (they are such an efficient people).
So do they still make Battle Ship? How about other game, you know the commercial. That chubby kid from Cohasset says "Ewh my Gewd, I'm the sole suh-vai-va!" I think it was called Mouse Trap. -

Subject: Photos anyone?
Just curious. Anyone have any photos of knit/carft projects they are working on? I'm working on Men's Guayabara Shirt for Knit.1. Looks liek a pile of crap at the moment, but it's in that messy stage. Love to see what you're all up to. -
I just finished my first pair of gloves. Haven't taken pics of both of them yet, but here's the first one in progress and when I finished it:

I also just started on a hat with that brown/tan/cream thick-and-thin yarn I got from you when we swapped a while back. I never seem to be able to make hats the right size, so I'm determined to frog it and start over as many times as it takes if I can't get this one just right at first.
