    2. I'm a musician. I'm referring to the "heavy"ness in musical terms. I don't think Guided By Voices (as found on the Commonwealth jukebox) is going to release a rap album anytime soon.
    3. Doesn't anyone know who Deep Purple is????

Here, I'll rephrase my response for the socially paranoid:
lol. And what is heavy-in-the-ass music? Metallica? Deep Purple?
    Heavy in the ass music?

Sleep, High On Fire, Sunn0))), eyehategod, Kyuss, Nebula, Earth, Unida, Dozer, Goatsnake, Electric Wizard, Mammatus, Boris, Clutch, Crowbar, Fireball Ministry, Earthride, Fu Manchu, Pelican, Isis, Neurosis, Down, Superjoint Ritual, Blue Cheer, Black Sabbath, Orange Goblin, Monster Magnet.

Really, I can go on and on.

Light in the ass music? Wilco, Radiohead, Arcade Fire, 90% of what Pitchfork pushes, "Indie Rock" in general

    1. and 3.
What's with the Deep Purple obsession, dearest?
    2.
    Why no tunes on MySpace?

It may have been discussed elsewhere on this thread--apologies, if so--but does anyone know what the story is with the new bar across from Buttermilk on 5th Ave btwn 15th & 16th? I heard Mikey Palms of Seafaring fame will DJ at the opening and I think it'll be a wine/cheese joint called Oyster(?)

    Anyone?

Radiohead is half and half actually. OK Computer, Kid A and Amnesiac are great for some loud rock if you haven't checked them out.

That is JM's fault via John L. via Wolfmother. haha. You know when you hear something you like, realize who they're ripping off and then start listening that band again? I've been neglecting the Purple for many years, so I'm in a revisiting period.

    2.

    Very soon my darling.
  • I shouldn't have thrown the snark at Radiohead. I don't hate them, just people who love them. Passive aggressivity at its worst, I do realize.
  • erskelyne wrote: I shouldn't have thrown the snark at Radiohead. I don't hate them, just people who love them. Passive aggressivity at its worst, I do realize.
Yeah, their first album and the hype that surrounded it scared me away for many years.

I know what you mean about the people who like/make that kind of "I'm too cool to even try" music. Like Wilco. ugh.
  • OK, at the risk of venturing EVEN FURTHER off topic, I'm just gonna defer to the guys at Trouser Press.com who have got the Wilco thing down cold:

"At times, the actual content of Wilco's records has been all but buried in unquestioning critical acclamation and unrealistic enthusiasm for what the group appears to be. Paradoxically, Wilco is both seriously talented and wildly over-rated."

I completely understand the above: I own every single one of their studio albums yet I don't consider myself a fan; I just like them. And when I saw their doc--I Am Trying To Break Your Heart--it left a bit of a sour taste in my mouth. Jeff Tweedy comes off as an asshole, and a non-confrontational, passive-aggressive one, at that. (I brought this up with Wilco-heads I know, but they were too busy enjoying that infamous Jim Jones-approved soft drink.) I haven't enjoyed their music in the same manner since.

And I think that their stance reflects the attitude towards music that some of the so-called hipsters you encounter in these local bars have. When the truth is they all secretly own every Bon Jovi record. (Jersey natives get a minor pass for that; all others, no.) Listen, I own records by Pavement AND Phish; Radiohead AND Rush; if it's good, it's good. Period.

PS: Commonwealth has my current fave jukebox. Great Lakes and Buttermilk have both lost its crown to the new kid. Or at least access to my dollar bills.

Give me a bar with that shit on the jukebox and I would be a very happy camper.

I thought the new catchphrase for most of the above was "stoner metal" or "intellegent metal". Sorry, I listen to too much NPR.
  • I'd love to see a bar have Big Booty Bitches on the jukebox. that's gotta be heavy in the ass music, no?

as an absurd aside, I think it's pretty funny that I'm scheduled to be at a booty-bass party in London in two weeks. how come we don't have those?

Been to Lucky 13? I haven't been there lately but their jukebox just might be what you're looking for...

I went to a baltimore tech-house party last weekend that was pretty bass heavy. Not dj-funk booty or dj assault, but butt shakin' took place. Are you talking Detroit bass? Chicago? Miami?* Shit still happens but it's few and far between. DJ Assault rolls through a couple times a year but that's it. I think southern music has sort of taken over, for better or worse

*sorry, former raver. I know my bass by city and bpm.

Lucky 13 is okay but it reminds me of what a 13 year old suburban metalhead's bedroom would look like if it were turned into a drinking establishment. The jukebox is eh...okay. Not great. The crowd doesn't do much for me.

I grew up in miami so most of the (old) bass that's on my radar is miami bass. but there's some newer stuff I like and a lot of songs by electronic/house musicians that fall into the bass category of my musical brain (like soft pink truth's big booty bitches).

the europeans who are into booty bass kinda freak me out - they tend to like a lot of house-y aspects and it ends up sounding really off to my ear. some uk site just did a booty DJ competition, for instance, and I couldn't even manage to vote for "best" mix because I thought they were all total shit.

the exception being the DJ that I'm going to see in london - she's got a handle on it. except I think she leans more in the detroit direction.

Ha! Like the great poet Homer J. Simpson says, "It's funny 'cause it's true."

    Fair enough.

Why are there anonymous, unregistered guests on here anyway?
  • Any ideas for a post-birthday-dinner drinking establishment on 5th? Dinner's at Blue Ribbon and we'll be a group of abut 12....
  • hey guest - I removed your post from this thread. read the rules at the top of the pages and chill out.

So assholes from gawker don't have to waste their time registering before they insult everything and anything park slope.
  • Darn. I missed the latest nugget of stupidity. They always amuse me so.

Better yet someone could publish it with all proceeds going to the inebriation of registered Brooklynians.

Well, Great Lakes is right next door making it quite convenient. And I'm sure you can snag a couple of tables in the back--or front--depending on the night and/or time. But if you're not familiar with it, Lakes is a dive. A chill one but still...If that's not your speed, Union Hall (Union St just off 5th Ave) has more than enough space to accomodate you and your party. It depends on what you're looking for and how far you want to go. I'm suggesting those two since they're close to Blue Ribbon and a large crowd can be unwieldy. Loki and The Gate also come to mind (both on 5th Ave; 2nd St and 3rd St, respectively).
  • Great Lakes sounds.....great. :-) Large parties can be tricky to accomodate and we're not very fancy to begin with. We'll check it out...thanks!

Great Lakes is sooo not a dive. Now Jackie's, that there is one old fashioned dive. Last time I was at Jackie's a very old man smelling of urine bought the bar a round and then started dancing to oldies with what seemed like a middle aged hooker.

    Good times.

And I second the need for a Guest's Wit and Wisdom forum. But you only get to read it if you register!

Maybe I'm wrong, but to differentiate them I'd call Jackie's 5th Amendment an "old man" bar. To me, dives are rundown and low-key but not necessarily seedy. (Not that "old man" bars are necessarily seedy, either.) In the case of bklyntransplant, since she was going to be having dinner at a rather upscale restaurant--for PS, anyway--I wanted to make sure she knew the literally "hole-in-the-wall" 'Lakes does not have the decor or vibe of Loki or Union Hall which are DEFINITELY not dives.

Once again, another person that regales me with stories of a fun night out at Jackie's. Wanna hit that place one of these days, but my friends that go there are bartenders that head over at 5 AM after their respective shifts, so it's not always doable for me...
  • jackie's 5th is the epitome of dive. similar to mooney's on flatbush.
  • alafairnadia wrote: jackie's 5th is the epitome of dive. similar to mooney's on flatbush.
I prefer the term "Professional drinking establishment". I went into Jackie's once and a guy was having whiskey with a milk back.

Hey this might be a long shot, but has anyone been to Mr. Bing's in San Francisco? Best dive...uh, sorry, PDE I've ever been in.

HELL YEAH I've been there! Wait, ahh... oh.. no, never ever been there... I would never frequent dive bars on both coasts, that's is just plain wrong.

    :lol::wink:
  • I dunno about this "PDE". It looks like something akin to a PDF. Or maybe an OBE.
  • You sure as hell don't want to see any PDA in one of these PDE's.
