That's what that sign in the window said.
Yeah, I walked by there, too... I was really hoping for some of those little Russian tea cookies... I had a few yesterday, they were great...
  • WhyFi wrote: D'oh! Not open on Sunday at all!

oh well, maybe this way i'll still be able to fit through the door after they've been open for a month.

i do wish they'd been open when i walked by this afternoon -- imagine my surprise at accidentally BURNING calories instead of packing them into my mouth -- but it's my fault for not remembering what the sign said. i'm SUPER EXCITED that they open so early on the weekdays, as it means i can have a treat on my early days.

it doesn't seem like they've been hurting for business, so why not close on sundays? it hasn't pushed tom's out of existence.

oh, and in case anyone reading this hasn't already assumed the following, they are closed for labor day.
  • WhyFi wrote: [quote=alafairnadia]on Sundays, at least, after 5 p.m., all baked goods are half off! aww yeah! that lead to me getting a total sugar rush while watching the fire dept clear the downed tree at park and vandy.
Eh? Isn't today Sunday? How did you get past 5pm already?

I think she meant Saturdays. Joyce is closed on Sundays.

EDIT: DO'H! Like everyone else, I got fooled by the 2nd page thing. #-o

I bet that once Joyce has gotten some of her employees trained to the point where she can trust them in her absence, the hours might be extended somewhat. I'd love for them to be open on Sunday, but I don't blame her for wanting a day off. Maybe she's religious and goes to church. Tom's seems to be able to do ok despite being closed on Sunday.

Have you seen/spoken to her at the shop? I would have liked to spoken with her/congratulated her, but I have no idea of what she looks like!

Yeah, needing a day off is a necessity (just ask my wife), so no hard feelings there... (but I do wish it were Monday instead!!!).
  • Glad I looked at this before going over there for a look-see. I would have been disappointed and sad. I'll have to wait until a later date. Do people know if it will be open tomorrow (Labor Day)? That's a regular Monday work day for me and I could use a morning treat.

She's pictured on their website....I noticed her in the back, apparently baking, yesterday. She's the mastermind behind their delicious treats.

    It's the curse of Tom's!

Pretty soon on Sundays PH will be pattie and slice-free, too. It's spreading.

Yes. I will sniffle a little as I make my own coffee and pour a bowl of cereal.

    Perhaps tomorrow....
  • No way a new establishment should be closed today. Boo.
  • oh, did I report on what I consumed on Saturday???

I had: a coffee (yumness), a russian tea cookie (zomg so fuckin' good - I want a big bag of these), a macaroon (okay, a little sweet), and a chocolate cupcake with marshmallow frosting (good and sweet ... in a good way). next saturday I'm heading over there btwn 5&6 to buy out their stock of russian tea cookies.
  • alafairnadia wrote: ...next saturday I'm heading over there btwn 5&6 to buy out their stock of russian tea cookies.
I'll be one step ahead of ya, sister! They are really effin' good! My wife doesn't like 'em in general, but she didn't have any problems finishing the two that I got her! Oh, and at fitty-cent a piece, it makes you wanna buy 'em by the dozen.

    between 5&6 on saturday, they're 25 cents!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
  • holy crap, i'm eating the lemon blueberry scone right now, and it's ridiculously delicious. best scone i've had south of katonah avenue in the bronx!
  • I've had the chocolate chip scone and the cranberry walnut scone so far and both were great. It looks like scones are one of Joyce's fortes. :D
  • Subject: half off pastries

    oh yes

me and my girl stopped by there on sunday at like 5:45 and the pastries were 1/2 of,f we loaded up on 4 of them.

brownie= not bad i prefer mine a little more chewy but still pretty good.
    chocolate pudding= again not bad
lemon cream tart = good but it just made me crave the key lime pie they used to sell at the now defunct biscuit, that place had some slamin baked goods.
fruit cobbler= i didnt like that much but i ate my half cold and my girl popped hers in the toaster oven and said it was pretty good

all in all i think the place is great

they best part of that day is when i walked across vanderbilt and saw coffee bitch from muddy waters standing on the side walk with this stupid look on her face as she was watching all the people coming in and out of Joyce's.
  • I just went and had a blueberry muffin and a breakfast cake. Both were very light and not greasy and not too sweet.

They were a good size for a snack with coffee, but wouldn't really be enough for me for breakfast. The scones looked more substantial.

I didn't try to coffee, because I need to take a nap. But I look forward to doing so soon.

I thought the space itself was very open and inviting and like that you can look back into the workings of the kitchen.
  • Subject: seriously not open on sundays?

i almost went over and am now glad i didn't - i would have been all kinds of sad and mad and less likely to go back.

i'm told that the croissants aren't buttery enough. can anyone confirm or deny this statement? i'm a lover of the croissants (not really a cupcake girl)

SERVICING PROSPECT HEIGHTS FOR 10 YEARS

 Wow, if I'd known I could've gotten "serviced" by going there, maybe I'd've tried it earlier!
I guess I'll have to consider getting serviced while the sun's up - something I heard was only for ppl in LTRs.

    Sky rockets in flight!

    BFF!! TLA!!

On topic, I had a chocolate chip scone and something that was not quite a muffin or a scone this weekend. Neither was as good as I expected. Keep in mind I lived in Scotland for 7 years, so I'm not likely to be impressed by local scones. But the other thing (goddammit I can't remember what they called them) was dry when it should have been buttery on the inside. I get the coffee almost every morning; it's good, it's not as soupy as other 'gourmet' blends in the 'hood. I am admittedly a huge fan of shitty bodega coffee though.
  • The iced latte I had yesterday but couldn't finish was still delicious four hours later after storing it in my fridge. I got my kids regular brownies as a back-to-school treat in their lunches. They were very excited about the idea, but hadn't yet tasted the brownies when I saw the the kids last. The woman I bought them from said that they're thinking about opening up on Sundays. Perhaps a letter-writing campaign is in order?
  • sundays would be awesome! I'll mention it next time I go in.
  • I'm hoping they stay open later--I convinced my knitting friends to meet me there but it closes too early for it to be practical for them to get there after work. :(

Have had good AND bad scones in England.
I love the Brits but they are not the ONLY folks who whip up a good scone.

Stay away from chocolate chip scones. Try the cranberry next time.

    Good eatin'!
  • this thread is really long... someone should make a poll! i would if i had more time...
  • I bet they'll soon see the benefits of adding Sunday hours, especially if folks who stop in mention they'd love to see it happen. I tried to stop by on Sunday as well. Oh, how I wanted another red velvet cupcake!

The staff must be thrilled at how well-received the shop has been. Hope this will get other nifty stuff interested in coming to the area too.

I had an apricot and almond scone today that was also good. But so far, I liked the cherry scone best.
