$1 for a single, small palmier? $2 for a tiny croissant? $2 for a tiny cupcake? The sizes/prices are better in Manhattan.

I can't do these kind of prices on a regular basis. :-(
i thought i was the only one who thought the prices were insane. $2 for a mini two-bite cupcake? (which i'm sure is delicious, but i'd need 4 or something to get my sugar fix.) and the mini croissants are insanely priced, as are the mini pan-au-chocolate: $2.50. i can't see heading over there for goodies unless i'm already at the met food and need chocolate asap.

i will say that the place is lovely, and everything looked exceptional and pretty and clean and the service, while slow, was good and helpful. i had a little banana/coconut mini-loaf cake thing, which was super yummy but had way more butter than it should have. still, i started eating it in the car and was done by the time i hit 1st street on PPW.
  • i don't care if the prices are a little high, because they use BUTTER. i am so sick of paying money for baked goods only to find the oily no-taste of margarine. plus, frankly, where else am i going to get a fruit tart around here? at the bodega?

i was happy to see bread for sale today, but apparently they're only trying it on the weekends, which is the only time i can already get good bread in the hood (from the farmers' market). when i need bread is wednesday/thursday, when my saturday loaf gives out.

not saying you can find baked goods anywhere. but when manhattan a regular sized cupcake at either cupcake-cafe i or magnolia is under $3, the prices are high. just a fact, not a judgement.

Perhaps, but Joyce's taste better than either of those places.

I totally agree. I'd rather pay a bit more for a high quality item.

Um, I think sweet tea's point is that she likes pastries with real butter better, which means that they're worth more to her. People are willing to pay more for things they find valuable--and that's a fact, too.
  • Say it ain't so! No more 1/2 price goodies before close?!

And Joyce - credit cards? Please? As a non-cash carrying person, I'll promise to spend more per visit, and to visit more frequently!

You will LOVE their black and white cookie. It has a creamy butter frosting mmmmm
  • Me and SWMBO went today...YUM! It was PACKED! Had one carrot and one pumpkin muffin for a snack and also took 1 blue berry and 1 apple cobbler for dessert.

We also scooted by MW (after stopping by Fermented Grapes) and it was dead.

Do we have an over/under on MW?
  • I just got back from Joyce and it was totally packed again - I struggled to even find a seat (had to share a table with a couple of strangers, all of whom were cool and didn't mind). I had a chocolate croissant and an iced latte - both excellent. The croissant particularly, plus it offered a tiny bit more bang for the buck than I've become so quickly accustomed to at Joyce.

To make things even more interesting, the guys from the Usual stopped in to get coffee, which I think is cool. I'm glad that the vaguely competing (though I guess its an entirely different appeal, but still, breakfast) establishments are cool with one another, because then I don't have to feel like I'm blowing off the Usual (my favorite local breakfast option) if I go to Joyce when the Usual opens again.

Does anyone know when the Usual opens again? I'm sorry, it's just way better than Tom's or Nick's. Maybe I'll post this question in the appropriate thread.
  • i know i'm adding to this late in the game, but today i got home early from work, leashed up the dogs, and took a walk from my house on windsor place to Joyce. i just couldn't stand my own envy while reading your posts

brought home a couple of the famous russian tea cookies, a lemon bar, and a chocolate/marshmallow cupcake. i wish i could say that i held onto my self-respect and self-control, but i'm now staring at an empty box. the cupcake was nice, though a bit dry. the lemon bar was extremely lemony (which for me is a GOOD thing) and rich, and the cookies were very very tasty.

i think Joyce is a wonderful addition to the neighborhood.
    :D
  • everything is excellent at joyce bakeshop, but since i eat a LOT and it's a bit pricey... i always leave feeling like i want more and already spent $$$$$$$, but that's just me. last time i left, i came home & made an entire coffee cake all for myself.

oh, the people who work there are SO nice.
  • Err, are there some kinds of drugs in the food or something? I can't freakin believe that there have been 162 posts about a bakeshop. I keep checking this thread to see if there's some controversy, argument, etc., but no, it's just people sharing stores of eating cookies. :-s
  • mind control through cream cheese frosting? not a bad conspiracy theory...

I think it just goes to show how much people in the neighborhood -- or at least people on this board -- wanted a bakery around here.

I still want a bakery around here. "Let them eat cake" is not going to cut it for me. I got an unusually good (though pricey) wholemeal loaf on Sunday from Joyce's, but it's hardly a full-featured place to buy freshly baked products that are low in mono- and disaccharides.
  • I do wish there were more savory options at Joyce. sigh. every time I walk out of there I seem to be having some kind of sugar crisis.

though I was recently introduced to the awesomeness of christies beef patty with coco bread.
  • alafairnadia wrote: though I was recently introduced to the awesomeness of christies beef patty with coco bread.
oooh, yes, another bit of fantastickness at that end of the park. beef patty, coco bread, reed's ginger beer.... it's awesome! =P~

Look into the cupcake, you are getting sleepy, sleepy . . . :D

This thread has been viewed almost 10,000 times, which completely blows my mind. Of course, no telling how many of those views are from escap, checking back in disbelief at the number of views...

Is that "so meta", as the kids say? I think it must be so meta.

Last Saturday I bought (among $30 worth of other sweet things) a ham quiche. It was GREAT.

I propose that Joyce start using "buy ten get one free" punch cards. It'd be a nice reward for frequenting her place.

    Muddy Waters sidenote:
Their chalkboard seems to be offering better and better deals every morning when I walk by. It's still empty inside.

I haven't seen anything like that yet there, but that's exactly the kind of thing I've been hoping they'd start offering (besides maybe some good baguettes). They must be selling out of those items quickly, because I haven't seen them yet. Hopefully Joyce will take that cue, and start making more stuff like that.

We should save this thread to show to people who think all we ever do is complain--actually, we can go on for pages about how much we love baked goods! Hey, we had to take a controversial stand eventually.
  • this place is DANGEROUS. after another night of working almost all night, I was making my way in to work a bit after noon today. everyone is a little upset about our work schedule lately so I figured I'd stop at Joyce and pick up some cupcakes to bring in. so ... I ate one of her black & white cookies on my walk to the B train. people. what a magnificent reinterpretation! the white portion was tangy, somewhat like her cream cheese frosting but a little less cheesy. and the black part was chocolate with hints of coffee. SO GOOD. (I'm a frosting junkie)

I brought in red velvet, carrot cake and chocolate/marshmallow cupcakes - everyone loved them. the carrot cake, which I hadn't had before, is really good.

and I saw quiches there. and I had a cheddar and chive biscuit there the other day. mmmmmm
  • I took my mother there today and had a madeleine, which was delicious and an inexpensive ($1) addition to my cup of tea.

I wanted to ask the guy if I could bring my laptop with its defunct battery there and plug it in somewhere, but he was too busy and I didn't want to interrupt him!

by the bar area - end of the counter, near th ebookcase with the coffee and tshirts in it - there are at least two open outlets. I used one when I was there with my laptop last week.

There are also outlets by the tables along the wall (across from the main counter/display case). I've plugged in there several times already.
  • I'm a fan but how the fuck is this place closed on Mondays?
  • Innocent X wrote: I'm a fan but how the fuck is this place closed on Mondays?
Originally, it was closed Sunday. The owners responded to patron requests that the closed day be changed fro the weekend. I don't know if there are plans to keep it open 7 days/week. I an understand how that would be hard on the owners. It's nice to have a day off.
  • If there's any day people need coffee though, it's Monday.
