  • I took my laptop there today and discovered that there were outlets by practically every seat. :) My laptop is really old and semi-defunct but it was great to finally unchain myself from my desk for a few hours.
  • I stopped by today after several days of nondairy creamer and cool whip desserts (which have their place - has anyone noticed how awesome cool whip is? I forgot.) and relished a chocolate cupcake and gorilla iced coffee. guh.
  • The place is great, but a major rip-off. I'm sticking with Dunkin Donuts where are portions and prices are blue collar. Isn't this thread getting old now?
  • Anytime I need a bite of cupcake for two bucks, I go to this place.

obviously, not.. you are still reading it!
  • I have yet to try a cupcake at Joyce, but the scones are excellent, and oddly larger than most other items there (which is exactly NOT what I need, but anyway ...)

Breukelen and devincf, is there ANY topic on this board that does not cause the two of you to whine like little babies?

    [edited to remove offensive term]
  • I have to agree with devincf and Breuckelen, $6 for a coffee and two tiny cupcakes is a little much. I went once to check it out, but I doubt I'll be back.

    [edit for clarity]
  • JJB, I thought the thread about the guy who fell off the roof to his death was pretty aces!
  • JJB wrote: Breukelen and devincf, is there ANY topic on this board that does not cause the two of you to whine like little pussies?
Be nice, JJB. While I'm with you in sentiment regarding the substance of Breukelen and Devincf's posts, there's no need for the name-calling.

Also, many of us who were born with a pussies as part of our standard equipment *hate* seeing it used as a derogative. Using it as an insult also insults half the general population.

Oops, sorry—I've edited the post to remove the offending word. (Just ftr, I am part of the population that was born with ((and still has)) as pussy as part of their standard equipment.)
  • btw, i hate to be the whiner still (not really) but those black and white cookies SUCK. They just aren't supposed to be made with that kind of frosting. It's gross and way excessively sweet.

Oh no you didn't - you can mess with the yuppies but dont mess with my black and whites :)
  • I love black and white cookies, but these are like black and white cookies made by someone who only seen them and never had them.

Also, they are fucking miniscule. I'm like a Jewish joke here: "The food is terrible! And such small portions!"

Sales 101: You're not selling a product, you're selling an experience.

I think that, as humans (and especially 'mericans), very few of our purchases are bare necessities - when you pay 6 bucks for those cupcakes and coffee, you're not really doing it for the sustenance - it's because you like the taste and texture of the cupcakes and because you like the little rush that the coffee gives you, too. This goes for a $1 cupcake and a .50 coffee as well - do you need either? You'd be better off with a glass of water and an apple, but who does that?

$350 jeans aren't just jeans, they're jeans that make you feel good because your ass looks great in 'em. $70,000 speakers aren't just speakers, they're front row tickets to an almost limitless number of performances by the greatest artists of the past century. Are you paying $19.95 for some bound pieces of paper with words printed on them? No, you're paying for the emotional connection with the characters within the book. Does someone pay $200,000 for a Lambo that simply gets them from A to B? No, they buy it 'cause their wank doesn't work anymore...

Anyway, the point is, almost nothing is a necessity anymore - there are almost always cheaper alternatives - but people pay more for experiences that they enjoy. Is $6 for a cupcake and a cuppa coffee a bit steep? Sure, for some, but I'm sure that Joyce can attest that it's not too much to ask for many, many people that think her product provides a better experience than the bodega alternative.
  • Yes, I think if you stay there, you may be getting your money's worth. It's a cool place to hang out, wireless etc. For me, I choked when I realized their cupcakes are more expensive than both Buttercup Bakeshop & Magnolias in the city, which I think are generally considered the height of NYC cupcakerry. And in BK. That takes balls.

But charge what the market will bear, and if the coffee's good what the hell. I have to say, their scone is about the best I've had.
  • nothing like scarcity to drive up prices, too. i might balk at the price if there were a comparable product available elsewhere in the area, but there's really not.

anyway, if you don't like joyce, it's not like it's so difficult to just not go there.
  • I had my first cinnamon bun there this morning, and it was awfully good.

As far as the pricing goes, I think there's probably a minimum amount they need to generate to keep the business healthy, and if I get a one-serving-size baked good for that price rather than a five-serving-size baked good, I'm okay with that. I'm no more capable of leaving half a cinnamon bun on my plate as the next person.

More important -- know your customer. I am not him.

In this case. But she (Joyce) has identified her market, and there seems to be no shortage of that particular segment in this here 'hood.
  • The customer: "Dummies with money to blow and the need to be at the cool place."
  • devincf wrote: The customer: "Dummies with money to blow and the need to be at the cool place."
why don't you just stop going there?
  • devincf wrote: The customer: "Dummies with money to blow and the need to be at the cool place."
And where do you go? Where do you feel is the 'cool' place for you?

EVERYBODY has something that they're willing to pay a little more for, if they feel that it's a better-quality experience. So Joyce isn't your cup of coffee. Don't be bitter, just realize that your 'cup of coffee' isn't so desirable to others, either. I thought that you were against 'group-think' practices, yet you continually sneer at people with priorities different than your own.
  • Huh? Paying lots of money to buy tiny pastries so you can hang out at the "cool" new coffee shop is like the epitome of being a group thinker.

Also, I stopped going there a couple of weeks ago.
  • Are you the sole patron of the establishments that you frequent? If not, by your logic, doesn't that make you guilty of group-think, as well?

And though they be tiny, the pastries provide a more enjoyable experience than many of the alternatives in the area, which is obvious from the number of people that frequent the place. How they're more enjoyable seems to be your debate. If the majority of the posters on this thread had stated that they didn't think that the pastries were great, but that they liked the place anyway, then yeah, it's probably all a bunch of hype (groupthink?) that'll eventually die down. As it is, though, the feedback has been overwhelmingly positive about the quality of the food... so, again, it's not your cuppa tea, so what? That doesn't make everybody else guilty of being sheep. Go do your thang, player, and leave others to theirs.
  • devincf wrote: Huh? Paying lots of money to buy tiny pastries so you can hang out at the "cool" new coffee shop is like the epitome of being a group thinker.
more like the epitome of butter junkie.
you say that's cool these days, sonny? you need to get out more . . .
  • devincf wrote: Huh? Paying lots of money to buy tiny pastries so you can hang out at the "cool" new coffee shop is like the epitome of being a group thinker.
I don't look at it as the "cool" new coffee shop as much as I look at it as a new, independently-owned business. I would way, WAY rather spend a couple bucks more to support a local business that makes a higher-quality product and provides a nicer atmosphere than give more money to a big stinkin' conglomerate like Dunkin' Starnuts.

You're succumbing to that most ordinary and American groupthink- that quantity is more important than quality.
  • It's a bakery people!!!
I shudder to think of a butcher shop opening.
  • I spend a lot of money on stuff in this city --- like a $4 bag of M & Ms at the NYFF --- but Joyce even gives me sticker shock.
  • I haven't tasted everything at Joyce and I would like to, but I don't think the sizes justify the prices. I don't have to have supersized food, but I want to feel like i'm getting what I pay for. And with a cupcake that small compared to the less expensive and amazing Magnolia cupcake, I just can't do it and that stops me from enjoying what I believe are very good pastries.

One thing that I can thank Joyce for is Gorilla coffee and the incentive to buy frozen croissants for me to bake so that I don't have to pay $2 for a teeny, tiny nibble of a croissant they offer. Even the French don't have croissants that small.
